mcc currently has a big block of land in Box Hill (at Surrey Park) currently the home of the mcc baseball club (and part of an extended sporting precinct) . big enough for a mcg sized oval plus buildings with adjacent car parking. approx 13-14 km from cbd with eastern freeway not far away.

of course you'd need to also find a new baseball home somewhere else

How much of that whole space do they own? The baseball section alone wouldn't be big enough for an MCG oval, training and admin, parking etc. Does it include the area that the Surrey Park Panthers FC use? Or does the council own that? And the land to the east would fall under the Aqualink ownership I would think.

Don't mind the idea as such, especially with all the talk about Box Hill becoming like a second CBD, just not sure on the specifics of the land.

on what medium did pert say that the yarra park plan - which was not under his stewardship either, fwiw - was doa?

i only heard him on sen and they didn't talk about it at all

it was mostly about the coaching changes (on which he was very strong, despite king reckoning we've treated mccartney like crap) and the gambling issues currently all the rage

R.I.P.  CBD or inner CBD options.  What a waste of time and resources that was.

The thing that surprises me the most RN is that a large part of the MFC management actually thought it would fly. You only to take one look to know it was a pipe dream. Taking a large parcel of space in an inner city park of public land  then cutting down trees to build a football ground in the 21st century was never going to happen.

There  is imo only one option available in inner melbourne and that is docklands.

After that start thinking Casey.

That piece of land (baseball field) wouldn't be wide enough 'daisy' unless you included the football ground.

I'm pretty sure it's all council land anyway.

i worked out you could fit a full oval in (just I think) and the odd shapes left over could fit buildings. the parking i referred to is the existing parking including both panther and aquatic centre parking. the panthers have two ovals and i'm sure we could do some sort of deal with both them and the aquatic centre for mutual benefit

anyway it was just a thought....

probably is council owned but at least we have a leg in there and it is a sporting precinct which we could add great (shared) value to

Thanks for that. Almost identical to SEN except the last few minutes about the Home Base Search.

I thought Pert spoke really well, and will be a solid CEO going forward

Just hope we can buy some land near the MCG

What land is available in Docklands?

I was having a snoop around on Google Earth for another attempt at Photoshopping a new home base for us, but cant find any significant unused areas to use.

Anyone else with knowledge of what might be available in that area of town?

Directly across from Costco. Big area of land has been cleared. Not sure it's been earmarked for anything yet. Maybe the new road or rail tunnel??

Yep, its going to be one of the construction compounds for the tunnel project. 5 years before it would be available at the earliest. Perfect size for a very large facility though. We could have an MCG sized oval and enough space for a building at least as big as Essendons home base, or bigger.

Oh for a a few hundred million dollars and political backing hey?

Still might whip something up in Photoshop when i am bored.

Best option is to get something happening  on that Yarra Princinct. There is no urgency to provide parking. It’s opposite the rail station. There is a public car park opposite AAMI, just negotiate deals with its operators.

We need club admin offices with strong branding visible to traffic and a proper gymnasium and pool for recovery. The oval should be resized so it is as large as the MCG.

if that doesn’t work out, I’d be looking at the Burnley site that Pert has alluded to. I am almost certain that he is referring to Kevin Bartlett Oval on the Yarra Boulevard

Yeah I like your thinking. It would be a great location for us as a club and there's definitely the space if we had access to the whole thing including the footy oval. Not sure how we'd go 'kicking out' the Panthers, but I'm sure things could be worked out somehow.

It is a very random sample but views on here give support to a non MCG precinct development. I wonder to what extent the Club has canvassed supporter views of late on the issue and particularly in light of the Yarra park precinct falling over.

Yes i was very surprised when the news first broke OD.  I figured we had been approached by someone from local council or sports minister (et al) within the state govt, asking if we wanted to put a submission in to an up coming community type development.  As soon as i saw we were the ones leading the discussion/proposal i completely switched off.

I think this is the only real option we’ll be left with in the end, and I’ve havent heard of any realistic alternatives.

I’ve noticed the area under the overpass just before the bridge is currently a fenced off area storage area for heavy machinery and temp fence, etc. Not sure what works it is in relation to.

A difficult and expensive build next to the Yarra with a deep basement required, although a riverside bar does appeal. Yarra council are a bloody nightmare to deal with, trade waste and waterproofing costs will go through the roof. Could be a very expensive money pit, but we’re running out of options.

Sending Collingwood back to Vic Park would be the best in my opinion, but it’s dependent on them and we could be waiting a while.

Maybe we should stake a claim on Victoria Park and seek to have that redeveloped as our base. Hopefully the Collingwood morons, sorry, members, would be up in arms and 'force' the Magpies to reclaim their home territory and leave the Olympic Boulevard properties for us.

i don't think the panthers need to be kicked out. the baseballers would be of course

Yeah I only meant for us to get access to the whole area including the existing footy oval.

Casey is rubbish. Long term goal should be inner city. If Casey is even an option then we should look to stay where we are.

What difference would having the FD headquarters and training at Casey and games at the G  make to you? The only difference for me would not attending training a couple of times a year.

Negative - Box Hill is a wasteland and too far away from our heart (MCG and Melbourne's Yarra area) and where our supporters are strong in numbers (Bayside).

We should build a replica MCG literally underground kind of like the base in the last Matrix installment.

Location of your base has an influence. Good luck attracting free agents who will be forced to live out Casey way. What presence if at all will branding in Casey have on the growth of the club? We've been there for a decade and battle to see minuscule incremental growth.

Centralise the base. It's not even so much about the logistical challenges. Casey is almost a "out of sight out of mind" location. Can we really afford to fall off the radar and base ourselves that far away from the city? Think of the bigger picture. Casey is a cesspool.

well i was only tossing up the idea

Surrey park is actually right on the border of Box hill, Box Hill South, Surrey Hills and Mont Albert - hardly a wasteland https://www.google.com/maps/@-37.8273064,145.1134505,16z

MCC already have a lease there and it is close to freeway and train stations and is a very pleasant sporting and recreation precinct

The MCC (not a typo) has funded two 'competition grade' ovals in the grounds of the new Beaumaris Secondary College:

"The MCC has reached agreement with the Victorian Government to provide world-class sporting facilities at a new school in Melbourne’s bayside suburbs... This partnership provides a unique opportunity for students and the local community to access world-class sporting facilities, which will be used by students during school hours and by the MCC’s sporting teams and local sporting groups outside of school hours. https://www.mcc.org.au/newsletters/november-2016-edition/beaumaris-secondary-college

MFC is a MCC sporting team is it not?  But project does not include us. It now has its own football club formed last year with a women's team:

While the MCC has had a long-standing football section in the form of Melbourne Football Club, the MCC Football Club was formed in 2018 to facilitate a women’s team making its debut in the club's colours. The MCC Football Club is based at the club's sports facilities at Beaumaris Secondary College .  https://www.mcc.org.au/club-sport/club-sport/football

In the meantime our women's team trains at Gosch and plays at Casey.

Too late for MFC to get involved now.  Begs the question why MFC and MCC didn't work together to develop our base there!  I get the impression MCC didn't do much to help our cause at Yarra Park either.

It looks like we have been cast adrift by the MCC.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
