Who else could do the tall tagging role? If TSmith is right then he'd be my first pick, or even Weid coming back and Petty doing it, but in the absence of those 2??

Collingwood don't bomb the ball long like we do, so we'll have to play the Eagles differently and not let McGovern dominate like he did that last quarter in our first encounter.

Sorry I was there Friday night and Collingwood did bomb the ball long, they bombed to the pockets and backed themselves to win the ground ball or locked it in to try and get a score from a clearance

Yeah looked like a deliberate tactic on TV, flatter passes towards the pockets to create those stoppages, unlike us where we bomb high and long into the middle of the forward 50 where it is easy to pick off, and there's no one better at picking it off than McGovern. Ideally we'd come up with a tactic that will not see them mark every ball that comes into our forward 50, which is why I think we need to try an replicate what worked back in round 9 and tag McGovern. Until TSmith got knocked out he had done nothing for the game, then dominated the last quarter when they ran over the top of us.

Why do we continually Bomb the ball long?

Is it a part of our game plan?

Is just panic stations and players don't want the reSposibility of hiTting up tragets or being creative inside 50?

WHAT EVER IT IS  MR GOODWIN "IT IS NOT WORFKING" FIX IT!!

Plan A is get the ball, plan B is???? Without a smart user like Melksham we can look very ordinary going inside 50, I can understand from center clearances that sometimes the ball just goes long, but it's the general play where we look the worst. Not sure that it can be entirely pinged on Goodwin (although that is the flavor of the month on here) it's that disconnect between mids and forwards, we made the Rawlings move to help but it might need a total reset which probably only happens over summer?

Maybe try Salem as a high half forward, I know we're robbing peter to pay paul, but it might help improve the retention rate inside 50? For this game I'd like to see Lewis moved back again (if he holds his spot) so Salem can go to half forward, and then throw Brayshaw back in the guts.

Out: Hannan, Brayshaw, Lewis & Jetta

In: JKH, C Wagner, Baker & Jordan

Hannan horribly out of form & needs time in the 2's, Jetta back way to soon. Lewis can offer more in a coaching/mentoring role & is standing in the way of development & Gus needs some discipline.

The  in's are deserving of a chance & offer obvious speed, agility & more importantly game time.

Whatever it is the footy department believe Lewis is bringing to the team is now completely irrelevant.  Him playing in the team means a young kid is missing out on experience. He has to go.

Brayshaw moves into whatever role Lewis was playing on the weekend, and Baker comes in to play the outside role.

Yeah ANB, Hannan, but it's pretty much rearranging the deckchairs whoever we bring in there. Maybe Hannan out for either of Weids or Smith, whichever is fit. Go tall, what's the worst that could happen.

Wasn;t Lewis tagging Bont?

JKH must get a run

What has JKH shown in his career at the top level?  Speed?  No.  Decision-making?  No.  Execution prowess?  No.

I agree that Dunkley is far from the level, but I'd rather invest in an unknown, rather than a known.

Jetta may be back too soon, but looking to 2020, I'd prefer the backs to play together as much as possible this year to get to know each other than increase our chances of winning a mach by an unknowable, but probably small percentage.

Whatever the changes, Angus Brayshaw needs to play the whole game (less rotations) on the ball, and be told that if he doesn't run both ways he will play VFL (has a few mates). He is not a wingman, nor a back flanker. If he's sore or injured give him a spell.

I wouldn't drop Dunkley, but JKH has to get a run for his performances thus far, albeit VFL....

Yes you're correct. Which I find strange considering we have a midfielder that seems to grow a leg when given the tagging job. Harmes. His best games have been when given a run with role. He should be developing that by testing himself against the best mid each week for the remainder of the wasted year.

How about Harmes tag, Brayshaw inside mid, Baker outside, Lewis left right out?

The computer says no

In: Corey Wagner, JKH and Weid or T Smith if 95% fit;

Out: Dunckley, JKH and Petty contingent on Weid/T Smith;

Dunkley just isn't there yet and it's poor for team morale to keep preferencing him over others that are performing in the VFL IMHO and we can't afford players that are not providing more output at AFL level right now;

JKH keeps putting in the performances at VFL level and deserves one last opportunity to see if he can translate that to AFL level;

It might seem harsh to demote Petty after kicking 3 goals for us last week, but whist it offered some encouragment, I honestly wasn't over the moon impressed by it.  Tim Smith or Sam Weideman offer much more as key forward targets and Tim Smith for his greater strength and defensive presence in the forward line.  It might also seem silly not to drop Hannan, who I admit is on very thin ice, but again, I think he actually offers much more forward smarts and speed than Petty.

Dont understand this at all. Petty kicks 3 goals and takes a dozen marks and provides a target and yet you want  him dropped.

Hannan spend 82% on the ground doing ABSOLUTELY nothing and runs around like a headless chook for 3 disposals for the whole game and you want to persevere? Yuk..

Continue to get games into a talented 19 year old key tall or a 25 year half forward who has done legit nothing for 3 weeks straight.

Sorry but Petty stays. Hannan has been a joke. I am yet to see him offer any forward smarts or speed at all this year.

Seriously drop petty 3 goals for someone who has scored three goals in one half of the season. For me Weid shouldnt be back until he shows serious form at Casey.

Yeah, that was a bit of a brain faid.  Was meant to be Out ANB... got confused by all the initials and hyphenated last names.

I want a pair of the rose colored glasses you have Dazzle.  Petty only actually took five marks, had 8 kicks and my perception was that he didn't actually provide that much of a target.  Don't get me wrong, I have high hopes for Petty, largely based on some things he showed in a few preseason games for us this year.  To be honest though, I've found his AFL performances to be somewhat underwhelming and I'm not about to jump on the group think band wagon that his game against the Dogs was some kind of break out game.

I suspect that against the Dogs alot more defensive work would have been put into the likes of Petracca, Preuss, Hunt and Hannan than Petty and I don't there is that much chance of him reproducing anything like the same efforts on the scoreboard againsts West Coast as he did last week.  A properly fit Tim Smith or Sam Weideman will provide more output than Petty.

I agree that based on Hannans game on Sunday you would drop him, and that I'm largely picking him based on previous proven form, but my veiw is that you still need some players down there that know how to play that half forward position and I'm somewhat backing Hannan to regain his past form.  He has shown glimpses of his former self to me, particularly against the Lions a few weeks back.  We don't have the luxury of a heap of fit, in form AFL standard players to replace Hannan's role at the moment.  I think the closest would be Baker, but I'm not entirely sure he would do much better than Hannan right now either.

Just my thoughts.

Agree with you that the Dogs probably didn't put much homework into Petty and will find the going tough against a much better defensive unit in West Coast, but should not be dropped after an encouraging 3 goal performance.

I don't mind Hannan as a player but must be dropped after a 3 possession game. It would be a serious lack of selection integrity if he's retained. He hasn't played 1 half decent game since returning from injury.

IN - T Smith (to tag McGovern per last time), JFK,

Out - Hannan, Dunkley (apologies but an average of 8 possessions a game isn't cutting it.)

I agree that the dogs didn't put any work into him, the first bounce sums this up perfectly. Wood looked straight at Petty then lined up 10m away from him.

That said I still think you reward that performance, he was taking contested marks while Pruess was dropping chest marks and neither Hannan or Dunkley could touch the footy. Personally I'd drop Pruess and one of Dunkley or Hannan for both Weid and Smith (if they're fit).

Without NicNat and Vardey I'm happy to live with Weid in the ruck as the backup. Hopefully Smith can play the same role on McGovern and that should give one of Petty or Weid Barass and the other a chance against a smaller opponent.

Good points.

Preuss provided absolutely nothing on Sunday aside from a couple of hit outs and probably justified why he hasn't played all year with Gawn. If he's not first ruck he shouldn't be playing.

Sorry not great thoughts.

What would it say about a young player asked to fill a role and who does so - better than everyone's expectation I would add - and then leave a putrid Hannan in the side?

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

    A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

    The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

    What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around.It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
