I left my phone at home so no game time commentary from me. Did you miss much... probably not.

Three goals to the Blues from 50 metre penalties and inaccurate kicking from the Dees nearly decided the game against Casey but thanks to a couple of scrappy goals in the last it was a win.

To me it was a game of two halves (I have always wanted to use that cliche.)

The first half in which Casey may best be described as lethargic. Three players came to my notice. Jetta.. two mistakes.. two goals to the opposition ... (obviously needs a run)... O Mac... he tries but his turn back into an opposition player and thus caught holding the ball was cringeworthy. Lever.. much better but not really on top..however he was one of the few Casey players running on to present the next target in the chain. A class above.

Then we have the second half in which Lever starred. Casey should have been four or five goals up at 3/4 time but couldn't buy a goal. The last quarter was probably even with an almost goal for goal tussle. James Munro had a strong game all day long. Oscar started to play a strong game with some courageous marks.

And probably the star for me was our perennial friend JKH... provides drive at all times .. could be better directed but at this level he is a strong player.

As to what it meant for the AFL team... probably not much except that Lever played very well and will most likely play seniors next week. (There was one worrying moment for Lever in the third quarter.. almost by accident he went shoulder high on a Carlton player and then went over the player's shoulder to descend head first towards the ground. Looked dangerous to say the least but luckily he landed okay.)

Spargo DJ? No one has mentioned him so I assume a poor game.

nothing outstanding. Was the recipient of a good forward pass but missed the goal from around 40 metres on a 45 degree angle.

Has difficulty at VFL level finding any space and lacks the body for one on one contact. Needs to play  a lot smarter if he is to make it. Of course the gameplan does not suit him with its congested forward line and scrum like packs.

As you are probably well aware DJ I don't believe he is an AFL talent. 40 metres is too far for him that is the absolute  limit of his kicking. I don't see a talent that he has that hurts the opposition.

Liked Bedford and Jordan, keep getting development into them. Very concerned neither Spargo or OMac have no physical presence at VFL level. Shame but I would move on Spargo and think long and hard at OMac.  Kielty very ordinary as well.

He has always struggled to get a kick at Casey... Baffling he was picked at 29

Keilty is interesting, was dominating vfl at one point then came into the AFL squad, spudded it up and then has struggled ever since being relegated back to Casey

Spargo. I sometimes feel recruiters do so much analysis into players as part of a due diligence plan that they go against logic and gut feel, which in Spargos case would have been, too small without speed. Those two things alone should have ruled him out for further analysis. end of story, move on to the next on the list.

James Jordons game surprised me. He was draft bolter at pick 33 was very much a Smokey. It's looking like he might be a player, if keeps playing like that he might see himself break into the side by seasons end. I honestly didn't see that coming.

I suspect Spargo is suffering from the dreaded second year blues. Was quiet a handy player at times last year at AFL level. Talk of delisting him fairly premature.

PINK AND BLUE CAN’T KICK TRUE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons took on the Northern Blues at home on Saturday  in a game that was crucial in terms of their hopes for September and they took away the valuable four points on offer after some worrying moments.

Most of those worries were self-inflicted as a result of some shocking inaccuracy in front of goal, sloppiness in play and a little bit of indiscipline that all combined to make the game a lot closer than it should have been.

The final scoreboard showed the Demons winning the Pink Lady contest by 11.19.85 to the Blues 11.6.72 reflecting their forward superiority as well as the inaccuracy in front of the goals. That factor is not just a one off - it has haunted Melbourne and Casey teams for much of the season. 

The Demons were going to find the going a little tougher this week despite the inclusion of some depth coming back through injury. The call up of ruckman Braydon Preuss and playmaker Corey Wagner as held over players for the AFL game was a double blow for the side. The statistics indicated half the story in the case of the big man who 64 hit outs last week - the contest for hit outs in his absence went diagonally opposite. The team lost 20 to 71 in hit outs against the Blues. Together with the lack of Preuss’ brutish size and presence and Wagner’s ability in the middle, it meant the home side struggled to put their opposition away until the dying moments of the game.

At the start, Casey dominated the early part of the first term but struggled to convert. Then, the Blues stepped up a notch and found the goals with consummate ease. They led by 13 points at half time and Casey coach Sam Radford had reason to be worried. The sloppiness continued after the break but the goals came as well. Fittingly, hard nut Jimmy Munro scored the one that finally put them in front late in the third quarter. 

And it stayed that way in the last despite some shocking misses before none other than Munro himself slotted home the sealer two minutes before the siren sounded. Corey Maynard, Josh Wagner and Jay Kennedy Harris put in the hard work around the ground, Toby Bedford was dangerous in front of goal as was the improving Mykelti Lefau and the stand out youngster was James Jordon who played his best game yet in a game. Significantly, that effort included some time on the ball. 

Jake Lever’s class and leadership in defence were outstanding. After the game he was doused with the obligatory shower of cordial for a first time winner with the team. I doubt that we will see him at Casey for a long time. Nev Jetta also returned and even with limited moments, showed why he has been so badly missed since early in the season.

The Casey Demons are still waiting in line outside the top eight but this could well have been different had they been more accurate and had they not gifted away easy goals in this recent four game winning streak. They will be tested next week against the high flying Bulldogs at Skybus Stadium.

Only watched the second half, thanks to Dee Zephyr’s son, but Spargo was really poor. Hard to believe he’s regressed so far from the positive signs of last year. At best it’s second year blues but it seems to be worse than that. If we still had a Development League, that’s where he’d be heading.

It looks like he’ll get another year to prove himself regardless of his form this year. I thought the standard contract for a new draftee was 2 years, but according to Footywire he’s not out of contract until 2020. Was his contract extended by a year? Is it another case of premature extension?

Spargo is hearing footsteps, I reckon. Fritsch takes the whack 'cause he is played out of position (he's a forward flanker). Petty is still catching on to some big time action opportunities. None of the three read the game plan well; it appears that these players are often confused.
