Preuss needs to come in regardless of Gawns availability. Sick of this carp argument he has no tank. FFS he'll be playing 20% ruck 80% goal square. To all the no-Preuss brigade, raise your hand if you [censored] yourself when Gawn went down. Wake up.

Maynard isn't the best inside bull we have, far from it. But if he doesn't win a clearance he'll work his ars off to fix it. He delivers a wake up call to a few un-droppables.

JKH, same deal, wake up call. If he's getting a game over a few others they might have a long hard look. Also improves his trade value, I believe Carlton were interested previously?.

Spargo. Sheesh. I don't really want him back in until he's a fully fledged inside mid at VFL level, but 10 tackles for Casey is what we needed against Bris.

Lever obvious in for Petty if fit.

Possible outs: FIIK but a message needs to be sent. Brayshaw? Weids? ANB? Hannan? Petty pretty much automatic if Lever's fit.

I'd really love to know. If McCartney told supporters on Thursday we'd win the next 6, what the absolute [censored] went wrong? Is Rocket Eade available for a celebrity coach gig this weekend?

After the midfield debacle last Sunday, we have to give Lewis a run in the middle.  He did win 4 premierships, a Hawks B & F and All Australian selection as a midfielder.  He has good leadership skills and could provide some great feedback to our regular mids. It would also give one of the usual mids a chance to spend time down forward to bolster our skill set down there.

I’d like to see JKH get a solid block of footy. Last chance for his career at Melbourne. Likely for ANB.

Agree. We need Lever to be the player we expected when we recruited him.

But we might have to wait for next season as after such a long time out he will take some time to get back to his best.

Being a Brisbane lad, Baker had a massive cohort of mates and family at the game and was pretty nervous as a result. He had previously been delisted by the Lions Academy as well so I reckon he was just trying too hard and yes, got caught a few times and gave away a few freekicks. Definitely persist with him though as he'll learn and he's just the type of player (speed, outside run) we need to develop and grow.

Hinkley recently made a statement and dropped:  Rockcliff, Westoff, Ryder and Powell-Pepper.  There was an article yesterday about Ollie Wines (co-captain) the next one on the chopping block.  That is what strong coaches do.

The way our midfielders danced around and blindly flicked the ball around was awful - they wouldn't take a tackle.  It was like a playground. 

As usual Oliver constantly trotted after an opp rather than chased.  He has good tackle numbers but to players who are 1 mt away.  He doesn't do the hard stuff.  Neither does Brayshaw.  Even Harmes' intensity has dropped off lately.  Viney also looked like he caught the 'hands off' bug.   Would love to see their metres run stats and the 'heat map'.

The season is gone; we will end up bottom 3.  I don't care who we bring in.  Some statements need to be made.  Hinkley did it.  Clarkson did it.  Even Hardwick dropped fan idol Higgins.  Our coaches cannot avoid the hard decisions.  If they do is it any wonder the players don't do the hard stuff.

The sooner our players realise that no-one is a 'protected species' the better we will be.  Perhaps drop Oliver until he learns to chase, defend and kick - no bigger statement than that.  Everyone will be on notice.

Dump on me for this but reading between the lines of Gawn's injury I'd say rest him. He is too valuable long term to mess about with. They hope the swelling goes down in time because it's a seven day turnaround? No thanks. Preuss deserves a run and was by reports in decent form the past few weeks. He looked OK in Sydney but ran out of steam. His fitness must have improved. Give him a go and let's see what he has.The midfield was rubbish last week with Gawn so let's put the challenge on them to do the job without Max as a crutch.

So Preuss in for Gawn.

JKH also apparently was dynamite at Casey. Well, against expectations he was pretty handy late last year and was unlucky to cop an injury just when he was starting to look like he belonged so

JKH in for ANB who had little impact.

I don't disagree that we need to hold the mids accountable, but who comes in? And how did dropping those players work out for Hinkley on Saturday night?

Agree but prepare yourself for disappointment. Preuss by himself will get monstered. His role was as a twin tower with Gawn. We could have used Gawn as a floating tall with Preuss doing say 70% of the ruck work.

The role of the tap ruckman is massively over valued. It is what the player does around the ground that counts these days.

Unless of course our coaches can work out how to take advantage of a winning ruckman. Something they have failed to do for three seasons. (Perhaps it can't be done in this modern era.)

On JKH... deckchairs comes to mind but I don't disagree

The point was to make a statement and make them better players.  Hinkley was prepared to take the risk.  They all put in exceptional games in the SANFL.  They are all match winners on their day. The success of the move can only be assessed once they are back in the team which they will be.  I suspect Port will win more games from the improvement in the dropped name players than losing the game on Sat night.  The alternative was to let them continue to play below expectations.

As to who we bring in?  I've given up on this season so I don't care who we bring in.   The goal imv is to build a team for next year.  If that means making a statement and drop Oliver or Brayshaw and we lose so be it.   Give JKH a chance to show he deserves another contract or give Dunkley a run to see how he fares at AFL level.  Nothing to lose.

We're a little bereft of depth, which makes it hard to drop some of our guys who probably need to be dropped, but how many chances does JKH get before we come to the realisation that he's not good enough, even for our current subpar standards (which says a lot).

The JKH experiment goes something like this: he plays a decent game at Casey, gets called up, plays like trash then dropped back to Casey. His game against the crows was terrible. Some argued it was the effects of coming back from injury, but he played dumb footy and coughed it up more times than I can remember. He was dropped for a reason, and should stay dropped. We very quickly forget how bad some of these guys are! I know ANB is not perfect, but we have renewed his contract, so should stick to developing his role, if possible.

Totally up for Preuss returning, with or without Maxxy being injured. He's the sort of crash and bash that we need. 

Also agree with Pride being an inclusion. Sorely missed!

I think it is a pity that players like Sparrow and Chandler are unavailable.

It seems that some people forget so easily! 

I wish I’d continued wandering through Turkey and Georgia rather than return to the Northern Rivers to watch that unaccountable slop on Sunday. That’s the most ineffective midfield group we’ve ever put up. So let’s change it up.. (rest Gawn) ... the new mid six is... Preuss, Lewis Petracca and Salem in the square and JKH and Baker on the outside. The front six is T Smith Oliver and ANB, TMac Fritsch Hunt and the back six could be Jones May Hore, Frost Lever Viney... Leaving the bench of Weed to spell Preuss, Maynard as a mid, Hibberd and Lockhart... gotta do something drastic because getting rolled by Carlton would be the pits.

Yes true. I meant I don't think defense is our big problem. He's most certainly a key part of our best 22.

We seem to have picked up a good couple of roughies as well in Marty Hore and young Lockart.

In terms of the future, I'm considering these factors:

1. There was zero forward pressure against Brisbane

2. The season is cooked

3. Jeffy is not really the future and picks and chooses when he's going to go full bore

I'd give Toby Bedford a taste of senior footy. Quick, skilled and starting to make an impact at Casey. No better time than now imo.
