Mitch Cleary, reporting on trade radio that although both clubs have said its not happening, he believes there still might be something in it.. Journos hey! But you never never know in an industry where lying is the second language.

But i think its 1000-1.

He should have added at the end; "But it's very, very unlikely it will happen..."

They're just trying to keep the conversation going for as long as possible. There isn't enough content for a whole 2 weeks, let alone 1. They've been repeating the same content for about a week now.

I wouldn't be surprised if he left to be honest, two brothers in Perth, dad about to go over there as CEO, meaning mum as well.

As someone who spent a long time away from their family, it can be really hard.

If he did want out, i'd tell Fremantle to give us Pick 6 and 7 this year and we'll give them back our 2020 1st round pick.

We need a ready to go player if we're giving up Gus IMO. Cerra's age bracket fits nicely. I'd take one of those picks and Cerra, and say good luck, Gus.

Probably just journo hyperbole and taking things out of context. However I'm getting nervous when Mitch Cleary is involved in the reporting, is rarely wrong and fast becoming the Woj of AFL news breaking.

Everyone at footy clubs speaks [censored] throughout the season and especially during trade.

Believe nothing until a Club offical comes out and says we have signed player X or player Y wants to leave

Its all BS otherwise

Especially at Annual Meetings.

I recall our President at the time, swearing red and blue at the AGM, after being asked would we trade Phil Carman, that he would not be cleared and would definitely play with us the next year.

Front page headline in the Sun the next morning, was that he had been cleared to Essendon, clearly before the AGM.

If this trade gets done, this would be the club being ruthless* right ? We want the club to be ruthless right? But only if ruthlessness aligns with what I the poster thinks is right, right?

*as well as the duality of meeting Angus's needs with a compassionate course of action.

This seems like ‘there is nothing happening, so what can we talk about’ media BS.

On the 1000:1 chance he went, would want at least a top 10 pick coming back. 3rd in the BnF in a preliminary final year. If Kelly is worth 2, Angus is at least 1 and steak knives

Yeah and he clearly doesn't. Anyone who's been within an inch of the club would know how much Angus enjoys playing with this group. He has many close mates and is part of a young midfield with loads of potential.

I don't understand why these rumours pop up and linger even after Freo have said theirs no interested (you assume they mean currently or aren't willing to give up whats required for him). But also the club displayed any desire to trade him either. Viney, Brayshaw, Oliver and Harmes are our midfield group all 25 or under yet to hit their prime. You would be stupid to make a rash supposed "bold" or "ruthless" trade to break up a group that has developed with loads of potential just because they had one off season overall.

Probably because even if you had just said 'hi', everyone would expect, with your sunny disposition and outlook on all things MFC, that you would likely say 'Melbourne are [censored] and the sky is falling'.

The whole concept of trading a player of Brayshaws quality is insane. The only time would be 1 year before his contract runs out and you know he  will leave as a free agent.

Yeah sorry I was actually in agreeance with you re gus only leaving if he wanted out and was highlighting to others that this clearly isn't the case.

I'm finding the idea of people entertaining us trading out Gus just laughable. Last year was his first year of getting a clean run at it and look what he produced. This year the club had an awful year, and from some reports Gus was playing with back issues, so with those two factors why would we consider moving him on when he's one of few on our list that has actually shown to possess quality in him?

People are interested in improving the list.

Do you think Viney, Brayshaw, Oliver, Harmes and Petracca can all play in the same midfield? Surely that midfield is missing at least two things. 1) polish & 2) pace. Viney and Brayshaw are too similar to Oliver, but neither are anywhere near as good.

If we want to improve, let's look to broaden the skill set of our midfield and in doing so, make it less predictable. Right now, Viney, Brayshaw and Oliver is far too easy to coach against. Nothing particularly against any of the players, it's just they're too similar.

If Gus is exploring his options, we need to make sure we get something back as a club that will add something different immediately to our midfield in 2020.

Nailed it.  And IF his back issues are that bad (Lucifer forbid) he may well have similar issues in 2020 with a similar result.  This board will look completely diff of so in 12 months.  Rant city!

I'm not saying trade for trades sake either.  He could put in another 2018 in 2020.  Assuming he stays that's what we all hope.

IF and only if a very solid inside / outside polish option (who can finish off the good work with decent kicks inside 50 and bring others in to the game with perimeter hand ball eg, Tomo, Langdon, Hannan) presented itself.

I do!

Not so long ago a team structure was based around 10-12 'on-ballers'.  The 'on-ballers' rotate midfield/forward/back during a game.

Vince, Harmes, Brayshaw, Petracca, Salem, Oliver, AvB, Stretch, ANB were recruited on that basis.  We also had Viney and Jones as 'on-ballers'.  Clearly our game plan has changed from when Roos' recruited them altho I don't think the logic of 10-12 'on-ballers' should be jettisoned.

Our mix of 'on-ballers' is not right.  We are rectifying up/down the wing pace issue with Langdon and to some extent Tomlinson.  There is still the issue of spread from the stoppages and that is more to do with set ups and positioning than pace.

Brayshaw is one of our smartest midfield/onball players.  I would say he has more footy smarts than all those named above except Oliver and Salem.  And Brayshaw is one of our best.

I think the conversation needs to be around 'on-ballers' not 'midfielders'.

imv Petracca, Viney, Oliver, Harmes and Brayshaw can play 'on-ball'.  They typically play about 80% game time so that at any given time one is on the bench.  Another can play forward or back during their 80% on the ground.  That also helps keep them fresh to run out quarters and the game which is important with our ballistic, play on at all costs game.

tbh, I think our weak link is Viney's lack of flexibility.  He has only one position which reduces Goodwin's tactics.  He is our captain and toughest so isn't going anywhere.

imv the issue isn't which of the 'midfielders' is 'surplus' I think the coaching challenge is to work out how to use our best talent now and in the future.

“But it’s what it’s going to get done for and maybe how it’s going to impact other trades in this period. Bradley Hill for one and Angus Brayshaw’s name continues to be mentioned, whether that’s right or wrong.

“He’s a contracted player at Melbourne, but it just seems like Freo potentially could still be keen for him if the right deal comes up. But it might be a long way away.”

The Brayshaw link that just won’t go away as a Dockers-Demons deal looms

I don’t think any journo understands that players dont just get traded against their will. Just like Jeremy Cameron is right now, Brayshaw looks content at his club and the only thing driving these rumours are founded in having some of his family at Freo. Anything to keep the radio waves busy I guess

I read the 'it’s what it’s going to get done for' as related to Langdon.

Morris is at the shallow end of the media pool.  The last sentence has so many qualifiers it is so not credible.  It seems he is padding out his story.

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
