Tom MacDonald is a neocon who goes to Jordan Peterson conferences and does podcasts with the Institute Of Public Affairs. This is something I was willing to overlook when he was a half-decent footy player, but I can’t actually stand looking at the guy now that he sucks harder than a flagship-model Hoover.

Do you understand how contracts in the AFL work?

They legit wont trade him after re-signing him. Yes contracts work in a funny way but they simply wont do it.

If he is in this position in 2 years time when he is OOC then yes lets look at it.

Weideman aint going anywhere.

The Steven May suggestion up forward is an interesting one.

I remember i watched his under 18s game live for Northen Territory back in 2009 at Marvel Stadium. He was playing as a full forward and he was charging out and splitting packs in the same way as our very own David Neitz.

I walked away thinking i just witnessed a future superstar power forward in the making.

Agreed. I’ve been mourning his momentum killing presence for weeks now, but the IPA? The [censored] outta here. See ya Tommy boy.

Wishful thinking of course. We have many more weeks left watching him “compete” by jumping two feet off the ground while impersonating an inflatable tube man.

I like the May forward suggestion. He’s a proper footballer and very mobile for a big man. Trial him up the other end of the ground once Lever comes back.

Surely he’ll have another period in the sun. He was such an instrumental part of last year’s finals campaign.

He was brilliant. Although I felt against the very top sides his lack of pace cost us at times. He’s not on his own there, though. He will need to push out Hore from the starting back six, who I think has that touch more zip and agility.

fun to think about but no in a million years would this happen. no-one is ever this active.

Petracca isnt going anywhere. Either is weideman. we just signed him up. and brad hill is worth more than pick 17.

serong isnt what we need. he isnt super quick and just yet another inside mid like tom sparrow, albeit better skills.

Langdon I do think we desperately need. I agree on Jetta, I think his lack of speed is not going to prolong his career.

If we got Brad Hill and Jack Martin that would almost be enough. We have the grunt to support them. Guaranteed Weid will be a better forward with Hill or Martin kicking it to him instead of ANB. That said we have a snowballs chance in hell of getting either of them. We're just going to get Langdon instead who can run but is no more reliable by foot than Stretch.

Of his 26 disposals on the weekend , only 9 were effective. Wouldn't want to cough up much for him.

Pass the crack pipe.

Overpaying for Patton who might not ever be up to regular AFL footy and at the bare minimum will always be a poor defensive player.

Selling Weideman for a team that would have no interest in him - they have Reid, McCartin and Blakey and have to keep paying Buddy for a few more years.

Under paying for Brad Hill who is contracted and Freo have no incentive to trade unless it's a whopping offer.

Trading out Petracca for Jack Martin which in every possible way is a sideways or even backwards move.

Chucking a couple of ball butchers at half back in Langdon and Hunt, where does Jones play in this creative team? At least put Langdon on the wing, move Salem up and add in Jetta or Frost to provide some defensive oomph.

Not bringing in a specialist pressure small forward, relying on a first round draft pick to play half forward. One who is 178cm as well.

The Langdon trade makes sense, as does the idea of bringing in a good first round draft pick who can provide some class in the forward half. The rest is pretty fanciful.

I saw him play a school game at the MCG and he looked like the best bits of Roughead and Franklin combined but I think the reality is he reads the play and competes better down back than as a forward. Plus we got him to finally sure up our backline, do we want to suddenly have that be the issue.

I'm still a believer in the Collingwood, Richmond (pre this year), Geelong style model that you don't need 2 dominant big blokes. 1 quality tall is probably enough, as part of 2-3 guys who can win one on ones or create goals is a good start. Doesn't matter so much if they are big, medium or small and then get a group of 7 forwards who can work together in attack or defensively.

If you suggested any of those trades to supporters of rival clubs they would probably be just as vehemently against them as you are, only for reasons based on favourable opinions of their players.

Its all subjective. At the end of the day you have to approach something resembling a middle ground.

If we're looking for potential bargains to get some depth in the key forward group there's a couple of options who are out of contract.

1. Wylie Buzza (Geel) - 18 goals in 9 VFL games. Big forward/ruck type.

2. Zach Sproule (GWS)  - 19 goals in 7 NEAFL games. 31 goals last year.

Given both are well down the pecking order they might be available cheaply.

Involving pick 2 in any deal for Patton who's a big lump with a broken body when the Giants are probably keen to get his contract out the door isn't overrating or underrating him. It's just common sense to say let's not get a great draft pick involved in a deal for Patton. Didn't we learn from the Tyson trade? Patton's trade value should be in line with Scully's.

Similarly I'm saying you aren't rating Hill enough! Pick 17 isn't the middle ground there. Especially if Freo lost Langdon they aren't about to say sure, you can have Hill for cheap.

Weideman I agree his value is about pick 25, but finding a team willing to give that up (it won't be Sydney) and finding a replacement for him is the harder thing.

Martin for Petracca I can see the equivalent value but I can't see how that helps us. We need more quality in the forward half. If we traded one for another we'd still need to draft more. Better to keep the guy we have and draft a Martin.

Love the endeavour and ignore the posters who spend all day being negative trying to poke holes in this. I rate this however would consider a Himmelberg or Finlayson instead of Patton and also would entertain trading our 2020 first rounder + Brayshaw to try get back into the top 5 as well.

Like it Olisik. Personally I wouldn't trade Gus though. Petracca's the one.

I never have an issue with the criticism. It's the lack of creativity coming back the other way that grinds. Anyone can be an art or a food critic. Getting behind the easel or serving up one of your own recipes - that commands respect!

Jack Higgins worth a first round pick? He had a decent 2018 and has done nothing this season, he was even dropped for the latest round. Perhaps we could get a late first round pick for Spargo?

https://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_player_compare?playerStatus1=A&tid1=12&pid1=4150&fid1=C&playerStatus2=A&tid2=15&pid2=6465&fid2=C&type=A

I imagine North would laugh at those picks for Ben Brown, he’s currently coming third in the Coleman. If he played for us what would you want for him?

I think pick 20 is around the mark for Brad Hill but I think Fremantle would want more.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons return to the MCG wounded, undermanned and desperate. Still searching for their first win of the season, Melbourne faces a daunting task against the Fremantle Dockers. With key pillars missing at both ends of the ground, the Dees must find a way to rise above the adversity and ignite their season before it slips way beyond reach. Will today be the spark that turns it all around, or are we staring down the barrel of a 0–6 start?

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
