Have these stats been tweeted or insta'd or whatever'd to the afl feed?

Maybe to Gerard on Sen?

Let's start a conversation for change...

FMD - WCE, SYD (for the length of time) and WB for 2016 look like outliers eh...

anyone who's  got an account - flick it through to sirswampthing to get some p-values organised on that data.

don't worry guys the afl are fixing up all the umpiring problems by introducing a 4th umpire incorporating an interchange bench so budha hocking's brother can school them on the bench of the afl's rule interpretation of the day ?

I see the umpire at the centre of the howler call on Smith last week has been awarded with Friday night's blockbuster Swans v Pies. Good job champ.

Reward?  The AFL sure knows how to fuel conspiracy theories.   On the other hand....

You couldn't make this stuff up Sue.

Surely you give your best, most in form umpires the Friday night primetime game? So the AFL must've been happy with his efforts.

Thanks to the fact we haven't had Nichols yet. I thought he was meant to retire after last year.

Most of the paying public are blissfully unaware of these things, and the media won't highlight them because their accreditation will be at risk.

The standard of umpiring this year has been pathetic. Not just in our games, but in every game I watch. Which is why I barely watch any games other than our own.

Just watched the first half of $$ v Colonwood.

Magpies getting an absolute ride since the start. Deliberate OOB paid to them in at best a 50/50, more like 20/80, yet straight after deep in $$ stack a blatant 90/10 against C nor paid. Holding the ball and incorrect disposals not paid. Horrible  to watch.

Incompetence would be my charitable spin on it .... other interpretations   could be considered libellous.

It's seriously dreadful umpiring tonight 'mono'...each umpire has his own interpretation.

The only thing they have in common is free kick Collingwood.

Not sure what you expected. The AFL got the man of the moment in the Friday night spotlight and threw in Nicholls 'The Fixer' to boot. Something is very rotten in the game at the moment.

That is the problem with the umpiring system - it can only be put down to incompetence by the loyal footballing aficionado for self--protection, so powerful is the will of those amassing the mighty dollar as a right above all others.

They wont come in unless we pay them....

Don't think the AFL would allow that but they certainly could recognise the concern and pay them.

This would achieve a move towards greater payment for umpires and some of the proposals which have merit to recognise their professional status.

Also free kicks in congested packs for round the neck and in the back may reduce that ugly rugby pack style and open up the game if they were paid regularly. This is not necessarily to advantage Melbourne but would improve the spectacle.

While aware that duckers and divers could seek to take advantage technique would quickly be adjusted by coaches and players to overcome that situation. Reward good correct tackling but protect the head and the player in front.

oh and what about that obvious free kick to Oman when he was kneed in the back and no mark taken? There were a number of similar incidents not paid. It's in the back. Soft single handed push offs often just to get balance which did not affect the mark spilling were paid. Sometimes it depends on the positioning of the umpires more than anything else.

It seems that as much as I am diametrically opposed to most on this thread I am at least putting up a possible fix willmoy

Most others are just annoyed at the umpires and want it fixed ... full time umpires being the main answer

But that would never be enough as the sport is extremely difficult to umpire right now and it is harder to umpire than it ever was

Here are some of the suggestions that I have put forward previously ... all designed to improve the sport and make it easier to umpire

- 15  a side

- Either no interchange or 10 rotations per team for the entire match

- More defined rules such as incorrect disposal being clamped down on and 'Around the neck' being paid for crude tackles only.  Any ducking to be penalised retrospectively.

- keep '666' in to accompany the above

- Full time umpires

- Kicking backwards to be outlawed (must kick over the mark) and a mark only paid if the ball travels at least 20 metres

There's almost certainly more that can be done to make the game easier to umpire but that'll do for now.

But there lies another problem ... most don't have a problem with how the game is currently designed or played ... many want the game to be left alone. 'Let the Game Evolve' is the catch-cry.

My rebuttal is that unless we make the game easier to umpire,  the problem with umpiring remains.  And right now,  I am not apportioning blame on the umpires.  That's the back-end of a much bigger problem.

Liked this post but don't agree with 15 a side and question how interchange suggestion would affect.

incorrect disposal and kicking backwards would be a start to other suggestions also being picked up.

Good discussions.

“The football field is the umpire’s place of work and it is seen that any abuse directed towards them or any on-field official is deemed as workplace bullying and will not be tolerated,’’ the memo said.

The ban comes after the AFL sent Carlton a “please explain” afters is cheer squad called an umpire a “w***er”.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
