It was an odd article. Wouldย the Geelong, Collingwood, West Coast and Richmond senior players held such doubts and fears going into 2019?ย

What a pathetic, poxyย mindset to think โ€œthere wereย no guarantees of finals againโ€ as Gawn expressed in that piece.ย

Canโ€™t imagine Pendles, Danger, Cotchin or Hurn ever even entertaining such feelings.

Itโ€™s the fragile club culture that allows for self-doubt like that.ย

Itโ€™s not about that. Itโ€™s about confidence. Not a moment of self-doubt or disbelief.ย

Gawnโ€™s words belie a player and aย club that still donโ€™t understand the mindset it takes to be a winner.ย

A real winner. Not a one season wonder.

Interesting article written by Max

But my only concern is that he had to say it 2 weeks after the club had a โ€œsit down tell all truthโ€ session to reset the mind

i know people inside the club care, but how much do they care?ย not enough i say.

We cannot waste this year, we cannot write it off, we need to fight against the odds, again and again.ย

Last September told us we are not up to it, 7 months later we are still questioning that.ย

Back to the Bare Bones Coach, work from the bottom up this week

The truth is, we knew there were no guarantees.
We knew that just because we made a preliminary final last year didnโ€™t mean we were going to cruise through this season.
We knew that we couldnโ€™t automatically pick up where we left off.
We knew that every year that teams improve.

But what we didnโ€™t know was that we would be 1-5. This isnโ€™t the start anyone wants.
Losing hurts. It hurts even after youโ€™ve won 21 in a row.
I ย was drafted in 2009 in perhaps the most unsuccessful era in Demons ย history. Yet somewhere, somehow, I fell in love with the red and blue.

Again.. its all talk.. its all been talk the last coupleย years.. Max is great, but he talks a lot.. he tells us the prelim final loss is going to burn in the players.. we come out lose r1..we are 1-5 now he says judge us on how they respond.

Why in the hell should we believe and trust words. its rather pathetic.

I didn't mind the article...

From this I can take away that defence is the biggest issue the club feels that needs to be fixed asap.ย

I think we saw that on Wednesday night, there is a bigger focus on defence. There are a lot of other issues as well. Like spped and disposal efficiency which I will watch with interest over the next 6 games to see how it improves.

We are 1 - 5. I am hoping for 3 and 3 over the next 6. Lets see what happens

People are weird, hey?

Prelim to spoon chance in 7 games.ย

Thatโ€™ll do for a definition of mental fragility for me. Whatโ€™s yours?

Youโ€™d prefer him to say they thought finalsย wereย guaranteed? Personally Iโ€™d hate it if the players thought they were.ย

Prefer him not to mention or even think about guarantees or non-guarantees.ย

Winners donโ€™t talk like that. Second guessers do.

Matsuo, as is screechingly obvious, I was responding to the way people were reacting to the article itself.

And for what it is worth, your earlier claims about 'Pendles, Danger etc would not have throughts about finals not being guaranteed' are just ridiculous, even a perfect inversion of reality.

I swear, you're coming across as one of those people who are addicted to "Be a Winner" seminars and "Rich Dad Poor Dad" style self-help books. So much anger stirred up in you against what is just basic, normal, and practical humility.

Heโ€™s on a hiding to nothing,ย really. Damned if you do or donโ€™t. I understand the want to reach out to supporters and let them know heโ€™s hurting as well. Fair play to him.

Fixing the defence is a priority but the inability to score is almost as alarming. Our forwardlineย is complete puss atm. Certainly the delivery isnโ€™t helping but right now nothing is functioning. We canโ€™t buy a tackle in our attacking 50.ย We canโ€™t buy a goal from a forward stoppage. On the occasionsย whenย we do have forward targets they arenโ€™t working together.ย We seeminglyย have no-one that can take a contested mark.ย As othersย have noted, the absence of Hannan may be underย appreciated. And of course thereโ€™s the purple elephant in the room. Or rather in the west. Somehowย we need to craft something together that provides a better output than 2 goals in three quarters.

We made some small inroads against Richmond. Letโ€™sย see if any more can be made against the Hawks. There is still much thatย can be salvaged from this season.

No anger. Just exasperation and frustration at the losers mentality which permeates the club, both on field and off it.ย

Apathy is the problem,ย not anger. And your comment reeks of it.

Just more talk and unfortunately weโ€™re are number 1 in the league when it comes to that.ย

True. Doesn't change the fact it's an embarrassing article, written only to appease mummy and daddy supporters who want people to "stop being so negative!".ย

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.
