It is a big stage, important game.  It is essential we come out to play and make it a decent game to watch. ?

Sadly LH it will be a 10 goal loss. We just have too many VFL quality players in the side at present. So we will no doubt lose this spot and quite rightly so.

    Exactly. Also if our mids stopped blindly bombing it into the forward line via the stratosphere or kicking it directly to the opposition it would help.

    I am no Weid fan but if they continue to bomb it in then we might as well clear the kid to a team that will give him a chance with reasonable deliver. I feel sorry for him as we are killing what might be a good career. If I were him I would have my agent hot on the heels of offers from other sides he will never make it at the MFC with the current game plan.

    There are plenty of key forwards who can take a pack mark. It's part of the job description for a 196cm kpp

    He doesn’t. The ball is kicked too high and over his grab.

    Just hoping Goody bites the bullet on a few non-performing players who were originally part of his best 22 thinking.

    And being a night game it will be greasy, so there's no need for the three bigs up front format and we also need to send Hunt back to defence to cover at least one of Richmond's pacey forwards - Rioli/Castagna or Butler if selected?

    I suspect they will bring back Oscar to play on Tom Lynch, but I'd prefer this doesn't happen given the pressure that will be applied at night. If T.Mac passed his mobility test then he could play back there but my suspicion is that T.Mac needs two weeks of serious agility training before playing again. That would leave Frost on Riewoldt and we could try Hibberd on Tom Lynch with a view to him providing run off him and Gawn/Preuss dropping back to support him in the down the line aerial battles.

    I reckon a tough decision has to be made on the Wagners. Corey works his butt off, but hasn't done quite enough, while Josh has been serviceable but with our plethora of left-footers down back we need a right-footer. Happy for him Josh to play as a defensive forward on Houli though if they decide ANB isn't right for that role. Harmes and Brayshaw can play back and the former is an obvious match up for Dusty when he rests there.  

    Unless Lewis or Jones is sore  from Saturday, then both should play with Lewis a good match up for Caddy or Baker and Jones suited to Ellis on a wing.

    Never been more important for our midfield and fwds to keep the pressure on.. hamper the supply to them and then they dont kick 8 each. this will be the game to show if we are willing to work for each other and who sacrifices their game for the betterment of the team.. will be very very interesting.

    Lewis a good matchup for Caddy or Baker? If Lewis is not picked in centre square then he has no role. He is not a lockdown defender and he provides no speed or run and carry.  Against the Saints he was a time matched up on speedy Long and Parker who ran past Lewis with ball in hand like Lewis was a witches hat. 

    Jones is not suited to Ellis or other Tigers who will rotate through wing. Like Lewis he is a one paced inside mid and lacks the attributes and instinct of a wingman. Ellis will run away from him.

    I'd be ok with Ben Guthrie's changes....

    Verdict: Garlett for Spargo, Lockhart for C.Wagner, Stretch for Lewis, O.McDonald for Jetta and Tim Smith for Weideman.

    I can just see Selection Committee playing loser mentality and making 3  changes where 

    6 or 7 would be closer to the mark,

    I wonder if it will be 6 or 7 using the "excuse" that the short break necessitated some of the changes. In some respects, I'd be disappointed if that was the reason given.

    We need to bring in another true key defender to play on Riewoldt and Lynch. Oscar or Petty need to come in (partnering with Frost) for either J Wagner or Hore. (Probably Hore out based on pace.)

    Lewis is past it and we need to inject some more run. Lockhart should come in for him and play a wing role.

    Neal-Bullen for Preuss if he is not fit. 

    There are other players out of form like Hibberd and Fritsch but I think we have to let them work through it. C Wagner also lucky, but we are thin for options at Casey.

    But the biggest change we need to make is to our defence and being less aggressive in pressing the ball carrier. The Tigers are fast and will kill us if we over commit. Up forward the key issue is we need better contests from TMac and Weideman.

    I can't believe you'd consider dropping Hore, he was one of our best against St Kilda.

    Good comments otherwise. As poorly as Hibberd and Fritsch are playing, I think we're better off at the moment in seeing if we can get form out of them in the AFL rather than subbing in more VFL-level players for them. That might not remain the case if they don't pick up form soon, though.

    Agree with this.

    The Sydney game is a good example. We were much better at defending the ground at the SCG and that put significantly higher amounts of pressure on Sydney. They weren't getting easy out the back marks and goals. Franklin only kicked 1 and whilst he had a few more shots, they were from 50 or on an angle (i.e. weren't all simple shots like most of St Kilda's were).

    Pretty much every one of your comments on Weideman for the entirety of his career to date has been that he's not good enough and/or won't ever be good enough, but suddenly now he might actually be OK and it's the club's fault?

    Ive got a feeling the coach won’t drop Lewis or TMac but rather throw down the gauntlet .

    Garlett and Lockhart should come in for speed and maybe Stretch.

    Love to see Petty or Kielty get a go too.

    Outs would most likely be Spargo both Wagners and Jetta

    It is difficult. Normally we would have:

    a) more players available, fit and healthy

    b) more players in the firsts in some form

    c) more talent in the reserves pushing for their place

    d) an appropriate break between matches

    We are therefore stuffed at selection table.  We have so few players demanding selection, even from the list of guys that were on the park against St Kilda on Saturday.  Probably about 1/2 dozen if I am honest.  Then we are carrying a whole lot of out-of-formers who we ‘hope’ will come good.  We have no one banging the door down (maybe Garlett), with a few nearly there (Petty, Kielty, Stretch).  And then we have the rest.  How do we put a competitive team on the park under these circumstances? 

    If the out of formers don’t suddenly find the next gear, we are stuffed.

    In fairness, it was us and Richmond who initiated and built the event so I can't see the AFL taking the slot off us on the back of one poor performance.

      The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

      Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds. 
      This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
