Jones should play as a crumbing forward to extend his career .

With stints in the ball he would be very damaging as he seems to know where the goals are.

    In 268 games he has 134 goals, exactly 1 goal every 2 games played and mainly as a mid.

    You would think if he is fit, he would improve that playing small forward for a year or so.

    Oscar should not have been beaten either. Is your point Oscar and Jones are both ordinary? If so, I'd agree with you.

    It was the ease with which he was pushed off the contest that is what's concerning.

    Agree SWYL keep him forward of centre he kicked three VG goals last night and looked very comfortable out there.

    Our wings got slaughtered in the 1st half; and Florent was BOG really.

    If you look at most of their centre clearances (1st half in particular), their mids were pushing us under the ball and wings were vital.  Good midfield changes (one mid started 10-15 metres away from the centre bounce) in the 2nd half allowed us to start clearing.

     

    My issue is our wings on most grounds bigger than the G.  Roos wants TMc their and floating forward.  I still think Jones will be exposed on the wing for most of this year.  Last night shows that he might be able to do something forward...but it needs to be a trend not an event.

    First line you say he can only play in one place.

    Second line you say he never play up the ground again and his form in the middle has been atrocious for a long time.

    Third line you say he may keep a spot if he can kick 1-2 goals a game.

    3 lines and bagged 3 times. Do you not see that? You bagged him, its simple, just admit it, don't deny it.

    As I said, where is the one complimentary line that says he played a very good game last night ?

    He is a proud man and the criticisms from many quarters would have stung.  Delighted that he responded to the blowtorch with a very good game.  He led from the front as has been his want and the team followed him.  Great effort and he did a better job of marshalling the troops after prompting from Goodwin at half time.

    Looking forward, he has a bit of work to do:  21 pos @ 57.1% eff, 7 clangers, 3 tackles and zero 1%.  Accuracy and defensive work have been consistently poor in all 4 game this year and has cost us.

    Hope he has more consistently good performances and clean up the weaknesses.

    Jones was very good after 1/4 time. His 1st quarter was dreadful and had me slamming the couch. As I say he should retire at seasons end. Performances like last night will only be few and far between. Game has caught up with him. However he has been a loyal servant of the club and I believe the best send off we can give him is appropriate.

    So you stand by your bagging of him, even though a few posts ago you asked 'where did I bag him'?

    Jones was good for the most part. His goal smarts are still there and he lifted admirably after the first quarter. Looks like the well deserved criticism stung and got him into action. Question is why wasn’t he showing this form from the beginning of the season? Now he has to keep it up for the remainder of the season. We are not going to make the finals with a captain showing his 1,2 and 3 form on a regular basis.  I don’t want to see him like a cricketer who has bad form in a test series then just before he gets dropped scores a century and get to play another whole test series where he fails again.

    Should be used to the “sow’s ear from a silk purse” brigade by now Redleg.  Maybe they’re topping and tailing Nathan’s career... many wanted him gone early in his career and now they are doing the same as he slows down towards the end.  

    Sadly, they don’t have the good grace to talk him up when he has what was essentially a match winning captain’s game.

    I think he could get found out as a crumbing forward with his lack of pace and closing speed. But I don't mind him spending patches down there. Why he's an effective goal kicker is he starts on the wings and floats into the forward line usually on the fat side of the ground to receive squaring kicks or he often times his run well to receive handballs from contests. Always snapping. He certainly could kick 1-2 a game if he becomes a forward half player.

    From what I saw, Jones had 3 inspirational possessions just when we needed them the most- and if he could do that in every game, we'd all be happy. However it seemed to me that all the rest of his possessions were typical of his last few games - either directed to the opposition, or really of no advantage to our team. If he had other good efforts, then I  missed them, and I'm sure i'll be corrected on here if that be the case. His disposal is poor, and whether its because he is under more pressure because he is slowing down, I don't know, but too often his good efforts in winning a ball are wasted. The clock is ticking unfortunately.

    Kudos to him for fighting back not only from a sub-par 3 weeks plus a first quarter where he seemed to be often pitted against Heeney - a tough assignment for anyone.

    On the wing, most of the same problems of lack of pace and  disposal precision issues still stood out. However, up forward, when it got congested, he played like an inside mid / old fashioned rover. 3 critical goals; great effort, great response.

    People have extremely short memories.  Nathan Jones carried our midfield along with Oliver for the first third of last year while Viney was out injured and before Brayshaw and Harmes emerged.  He's still 5th best starting midfield option and won 4 clearances and 11 contested possessions against the Swans.  One in game injury to any of those first 4 and he's in there full-time.

      From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

      Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

    • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

      The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
