It’s behind a paywall that I’ve no interest in breaching, but I’d love to get Tim Taranto.

The days of buying those in the off season are past; ask any Carlton supporter.

How is going out and buying expensive players for top 10 draft picks 'Moneyball'? What a rag of a publication.

Edit: Have just realised the whole column is called Moneyball. Still a rag.

I'll take Josh Kelly thanks.  Cheers.

How about putting aside the money we might be expected to separate with for another player, using it for some intense and specialist coaching for those to whom we have issued jumpers and large salaries? There are many skills to be learned, many deficiencies to overcome, many candidates for such a process from the backline to the forward line.

coniglio - free agent who is likely to stay at gw$
josh kelly - likely to stay there too
whitfield - same again

i wonder who we're targeting, if anyone

Well, if none are leaving...  if all pre-Agent '020' are staying home we will have to go to draft.

One question 'wwsw'.  How can GWS afford to keep them all ?

Jones, Lewis and Vince need replacing so I'd be looking at free agents who can add some pace/skill on the wings and play through the midfield as their replacements. Jordan, Sparrow and Nietschke are most likely a couple of years off playing decent consistent footy if they even get to that stage.

A decent small forward would be good as well. Are there any of those types of players available via free agency that wouldn't unbalance our pay structure? Could be difficult but not impossible.

Darcy Parish is also uncontracted this year. I know Goody was a massive fan in his junior days and even spent some time venturing doen to Geelong to watch some of his TAC cup games live.

Wouldn't that be sweet to end up with Oliver and Parish haha. He would be perfect on a wing for us.

GWS trade out high and draft in high..

the end of 2018 saw the world catch up but they gave themselves a real go at the flag.

You might ask how can a team trade out Sheils, Smith Scully and Lobb and still be a top 8 contender. They are ruthless.

We trade in but have not drafted well (best we could get but no superstars).

Make no mistake we are going for it which is what made last week so disappointing

Slow and vanilla.

No thanks.

Traded our Shiel, Lobb, and $cully - there’s upwards of $2m ($800k, $800k, $400k) off the books

Could be Zac Jones perhaps he gets to play with his brother finally. Is smart and tough running half back and can play some Mid time.

I am not sure if contracted for 2020 however he will be only 25.

Watch this space - Ed Langdon from Freo

There were ‘jungle drums’ about him last trade season. Any substance behind them?

Freo were hell bent on not trading him last season and he was contracted.

comes out of contract at the end of this year and I know we’ve been targeting him for a few years now

Meh.

Dododo will want 2 x first rounders for Parish, even though he's shown little beyond being a bust. Pass.

I'd throw a heap at Kelly, Cognilio or Whitfield. Or a zippy small from Richmond. We need outside speed and a small forward.

I'd look at 2 or 3 small forwards. Bedford will be interesting to see this year.

I'd also debate your point @Diamond_Jim that we haven't drafted in any superstars. Oliver will be one. He's already a star. In twelve months, Brayshaw will join him.

You can thrown Gawn in there as well.

That's one thing I wouldn't credit Zac with...he's not a smart footballer.

In your opinion maybe not. However he appears smarter, more skilful and possess more grunt compared to some of our players at the moment. Not naming names.

was talking about the last two years when we have traded away our picks.

Trade v draft .. both have their costs and risks.

My comment was made in reply to a question as to how GWS manage their salary cap... ie trade high value players and draft high draft picks

BTW.. I agree on Oliver and Brayshaw... they are the reason we are in the window

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

The Demons head back out on the road in Round 10 when they travel to Queensland to take on the reigning Premiers and the top of the table Lions who look very formidable. Can the Dees cause a massive upset? Who comes in and who goes out?

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
