Wouldn't dare change your mind - you're correct. The only forward who knows how to play as a forward, find space, beat an opponent to the ball with a variety of delivery/set shot/snap shot options. Runs well, too. Can take a mark rather than a 'specky' by finding the space to make it simpler and easier, and consistent. I'd rank 'em: 1. Gawn 2. Clarrie 3. Brayshaw 4. Melksham 5. Viney when fit.

    TMac would have to be close to the top 5 - just ahead of Melk IMO

    Any calls on value added(ness) amongst players is going to be arbitrary, controversial and perhaps inaccurate so I take your point. I also value TMac highly and for me, he's Number 6. Thank heavens these guys play as a team, heh?

    I was not all that impressed with Hunt forward. Idk where he fits right now. I have a feeling they intend to play Lever, Omac and May in the same side. So to have that structure I think Hore plays in the Lever role as 3rd defender. Until someone bangs the door down I think Lewis holds his spot. Misso seemed to indicate there was some doubt on Smith getting up for round one so either hunt gets a chance or maybe stretch gets a gig on the wing and fritch goes forward. I share the ANB/Spargo conserns but I doubt they will break the status quo without an obvious replacement. So this is where my side sits now but it changes every day, infact it changed 3 times while I was writing this:

    Agree can't see them wavering much from what you've got there.

    Apart from no Hannan or Tyson this is pretty much the team we won two finals with last season. It may not be the fittest but its a proven side.

    I look forward to seeing KK, Hunt, Garlett, Stretch and the new young kids battle down at Casey for a spot

    Further, if it was only a practice match, why was it so necessary to keep them onfield? There is a duality of purpose inherent in all of this - team availability, team selection, team coverage, team due diligence.

    It's just our luck to spend a fortune on Lever and May to strengthen our shaky defence over the last 2 years and to have to go into round 1 of 2019 without either of them!

    I just wish it wasn't based on the whims of one man called Christian. Then there's the decision to ok Mumford's punch to the head. It's not that it's sanitised - let's face it, it needed to be - it's just the glaring inconsistencies which really make me feel inclined to walk away and just stop following it. The rules are called Rafferty's. They make them up as they go along.

    Westhoff is the matchup that worries me. He is a gun - highly mobile, good in the air and dangerous around the goals. If we can neutralise him it will go a long way towards winning the game.

    Agree about that summation of Westhoff - he has been a bogey-man for us for some years ... so I'd ask Vanders to have a rest on him across the game with some close pats on the back (of the head) and a few little run-throughs that will slow him down.

    Agree, we’re going to need to thrash them in midfield to limit the supply to their forward line as we have the B team key defenders in, could possibly leak goals as we have in the first two JLTs. Shootout anyone?

    Oh I dunno, when I spoke to Bayley at the sponsors function, he was cool and had no worries abiut being available fir Rd 1, just got a knock on the hip, was going home to ice it up

    Fritsch will be fine for round 1. He will have a light week due to a cork right on the hip point. A lot of icing up and rehabbing.

    It would be an interesting discussion 56, where would you rank Jetta?

    He’d be in my top 5, irreplaceable imo.

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road.       The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

      The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace.They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
