Harrison Petty and Declan Keilty

Really happy with their games yesterday, i thought Petty reminded me of a young Jared Rivers when he burst onto the scene in 2004 with his trademark intercept marking. What i was surprise about what his clean ball use. Looks to have gained confidence from having a good year at Casey last year. Wonder if he plays next week?

Keiltys leap was the suprise for me. At one stage he jumped over Nankervis and beat him soundly and tapped it straight to Harmes i think it was? Also took a really good strong mark out on a wing which says to me he has good hands. Makes me think whether he could be the smokey 2nd ruckman choice for Max come round 1? I know he has played forward up at Casey and has had some success as well.

Do these guys play next week?

Both have good hands above their head. Keilty has a really nice leap and a few of his taps were far superior than Preuss.

I would like to see at least one of them get a game next week.

Also wasn't Keilty meant to play forward? Was it the heat and Preuss not being able to ruck all day a factor?

Not sure but Preuss definitely had limited minutes in the 2nd half. Keilty held his own quite well.

A strong chance next week you would think, but I think they will face an uphill battle for Rd 1.  You would think that Petty in particular will push for selection at some stage, but it will be tough for him to break into our elite defense unless we have significant injuries  (touch wood).  Whilst like you I liked what I saw, I do also wounder if his performance was somewhat inflated by playing on the 3rd or 4th key forward for the Tigers.

Too small a sample size for me on Keilty, but did show some promise.  Preuss is still ahead of him as No.2 ruck, but good to have another potential option to keep the pressure on Preuss.  Also, based on his lack of athleticism Preuss will likely require we play another alternate second ruck in the event that Gawn misses a game through injury, so good to have that up our sleeve.

Keilty is the new Pedersen is my hope, a capable ruck/forward to come in if needed. I’d play him next week over Preuss as the back up ruck. Maybe just for the 2nd half again. Wouldn’t expect him to play round 1 but I think he did enough to deserve another look.

Petty I’ve always been a fan of his clean skills and very good intercept marking. He can get caught out of position and isn’t all that quick or attacking so where does he fit in our backline mix? 

May, Hibberd, Jetta, Lewis come back in, I’d leave Salem at half back. That means 2 more spots for Hore/Hunt and Oscar/Frost, or 3 spots if they leave Salem in the midfield mix. Can Petty play ahead of Hore as an interceptor? Or ahead of Oscar/Frost as the 2nd tall.

If we were a development team I’d play Petty because long term he’s got more talent than Oscar and Frost. As a team that needs to win as many games as possible I’m not sure we have that luxury.

I'm happy for both the get another look in. As mentioned above both are strong overhead. I didn't feel that either let us down yesterday whereas a few of their compatriots did.

Keilty could be another good backup option for Weid.  Tim Smith was also pretty good in the game against the Pies and plays his role pretty well.

I’d like to see Petty play again this week. Looked  a lot more composed than Frost down back. With May coming in I’d give Frost a rest, O Mac is cleaner by foot coming out of defence.

Keilty didn’t look out of place yesterday either, I thought he competed well and was surprised by his vertical leap.

I'm a big Preuss fan and have been keen to play two rucks (Gawn simply cannot do it all) however Keilty was a pleasant surprise in this position and will certainly create extra pressure for this position. if he can be a good forward option as well.

Was thinking much the same dazzler, particularly about Keilty. I liked what i saw and that mark also stood out for me. It cam after a bit on error so good he kept at it and reddemed the error. I love that. Seems thinner than i recall? Drunkn has he lost some weight?

Both good backup and depth players who are showing some progression, but with up to 9 players coming back into the side next week, I think they might struggle to get a run.  I won't complain if they do, though.

I'd bet my house on them seeing the Gawn/Preuss ruck combo in a proper competitive hitout before Round 1, which might mean Keilty misses out.

I was under the assumption that Declan had trained all preseason with the forward line.

@Drunkn167 mentioned pregame that he would be playing forward.

Seems like he was intended to play as a forward in the second half. Something obviously occurred with Preuss which changed the plan? Could have been the heat sapping the amount of game time he could handle and they didn't want to throw TMac and Weid for longer minutes in the ruck and hence Declan drew the short straw.

I could also be looking way too much into this.

Zero chance of playing next week, although encouraging signs from both of them.

Next week we will pick close to our best possible line-up because it's our last trial game and the fringe players will miss.

JLT2 is a dress rehearsal for round one, so we'll pick the best 26 players possible.

I doubt either will play on Saturday, but both were encouraging.  I think Petty has a long-term future and I was surprised by Keilty's athleticism in the ruck.

Despite some disappointments on Sunday, these two showed that they can step up and make the grade. Keilty in particular shows that patient development can work, improvement take place and perceptions change.

Petty looked hopeless last year although he was thrown to the wolves. However, he seemed to have no appetite for the contest but he disapproved that yesterday. A couple of good back-up players but will need to step over a couple of bodies in front of them.

Both look to be good prospects for next year and beyond. They showed some good signs and their are strong aspects to their respective games that will hold us in good stead in the coming years.

Our depth is starting to grow nicely.

As i have noted before there there is no way Frost gets picked ahead of Oscar. No way.

One i don't actually think they are competing for the same spot with Frost really in competition with may and smaller HB players.

Secondly, and more importantly Frosty's kicking is simply too unreliable, as was on show yesterday. We have enough poor kicks in the side without picking one we have other options for.

Also on show yesterday was that Frosty really struggles on on one in terms reading the flight of the ball and being out positioned.

Both Frosty and Omac were pretty average yesterday but Omac was better than Frost. He is comfortably ahead of Frost (who by the way i have a lot of time for).

Surprised by Keilty's leap. I think we have to play him simply because we have heaps of smalls/mediums. If Gawn gets injured would need a back up Preuss. Gone are the put anyone in to take the tap days.

We are a static team on the forward line. I'd reckon Preuss would be better utilised as a straight-line forward with both mass and momentum into spaces - who'd get in his way if their heads were screwed on? He'd draw a defender, he'd then lower the eyes of our feeders and would be most likely to enable our other talls to avoid 'blocking', screening and overt contact from opponents. Melk stands out as our main Mr Mobile down there and does it really well, in all directions. A big fella like Preuss just needs a straight line and just enough distance to build 'his level of speed' in that direction.  He has an intention, too, other than marking the ball - and by hell, he can kick! I reckon he can body slam, too.

both showed good signs yesterday, but lets not forget that Keilty came on fresh and played against blokes who had already played half a game in stinking heat. but having said that I thought he was better rucking than Preuss. won a lot of taps he contested and gave something at ground level too. Preuss looked all at sea.

Petty was ok. took a couple of good grabs. it would be good if Petty could take Oscars spot. Oscar hasn't got a decent leap, is weak at spoiling and is just too slow for AFL imo, but I doubt Petty would be ready yet.

I think Hore is the one who will likely be there in r1. he's showed he can play on taller opponents, which I think allows us to play just the 2 key defensive talls. he gives good rebound as well. so I would prefer we play a defence of May, Lever, Hore, rather than have Oscar or Frost in the side. but obviously we more than likely need one of them 2 to fill the void until Lever returns unfortunately.

No you are correct. Was originally going to be Ruck/Fwd with more forward time to give TMac and Weid some more rest, but the combo with him and Preuss in the ruck was working better so they chose to keep him Ruck only. Would've liked to see him go forward and maybe kick a goal but he showed some good signs. Obviously was helped out a lot by the fact he was much fresher coming off a 2 quarter break but still competed well and made up for a couple of mistakes.

We will see what happens from here.

I think Frost and Oscar were (and are) both bad and limited footballers. Oscar is more talented and a nice kick who doesn't turn the ball over, but he still has no physical presence and doesn't kill the contest. Both the Balta and Higgins goals on the goal line came after Oscar failed to kill contested situations. He's indecisive, slow and hesitant to commit his body. Frost will have a few clangers but if he's put in the right positions - ie. playing from behind on a  lead up forward (ie. Jeremy Cameron, Tex Walker and others last year) he'll make them earn it.

It mostly comes down to how they want to use May and how the other defenders will work around him. 

I get the feeling it will be May at CHB and Oscar at full back to start with and we'll try to dictate with pressure up the ground to stop quick ball exposing Oscar and provide May a chance to intercept and control the half back line. Sounds good in theory but if May blows up chasing around a decoy and Oscar gets exploited deep then I can see the argument for May to stay deep and Frost to come in at CHB.

I hear what you say 56, but the ball would have to come down very quickly for the big Prussian, and then you have the problem of the ball hitting the deck and rebound. He may be useful as a decoy once in a while but not for a sustained period of time. If he gets a reputation for his physical contact the umpires will be all over him. I prefer more mobility down forward than the big fella.
