You know, an interesting point i Just thought of,  when rereading, & seeing your tag..

... is the correlation between boxing and American GridIron.  Re the false sense of security that the helmets give to the GridIron players.. also I think the Gloves on the boxers.

 

No blood leaves a clean impression... and lasting problems.

I just have a different opinion.  We probably agree on what it is (AFLX) but I am not in the least bit concerned where as others (not necessarily you) are carrying on as if AFLX is an assault on their senses.

Well it is summer so I'll waste some more of our time by replying.   Obviously if it "is an assault on their senses" then I suggest people look-away.   But I think it is reasonable to be upset by AFLX.  If something you love is mangled in your judgement , whether from good motives or to just increase Gil's bonuses, then angst seems very understandable to me.

Putting aside the like or dislike of AFLX for a moment and the whole marvel super-hero stuff,  it's possibly better to view what we will see as a spectacle.  Just my take - not gospel.

• 16 players on the rectangular field as opposed to 22 in Soccer & NFL,  26 for League & 30 for Union
• Open footy with little or no congestion and very little tackling and because of that,  the injury factor is reduced.  However,  Docklands has a history of throwing up non-contact injuries so there is likely to be an injury or 2 (hopefully not a bad one)
• No tribalism,  rivalries,  fantasy sports or gambling aspect. No club theme songs but they've probably organised some stuff to liven up the crowd pre-match
• Keepings off will be at a premium so we should see lots of players running with the ball taking a bounce or 2.  The players will be able to exhibit their skills without the need to get rid of the ball in a split-second.
• Kicking to position with players running to receive/mark could take precedence over 15 metre hit-up passes that we often see in the AFL.  But we could see both in equal measure.
• How the crowd reacts to goals will be interesting - last year there were uncomfortable moments of silence so they might pipe in some crowd noise.  Nothing is sacred.
• The super-goal will almost certainly get the most reaction especially when that super-goal is worth double points.  But what that reaction will be is anyone's guess.
• The crowd figures could be artificially boosted but the actual crowd could be boosted by some freeby's anyway.  They won't want an empty stadium
• The TV numbers is the biggie - there isn't a lot of sport going on next weekend and footy-starved fans may well just tune in for a look-see.  And there are 10's of thousands of footy-starved fans.  If it rates well,  we'll get more AFLX. 

I'm going to watch it if I get a chance but only to see whether it offers anything.

It’s worth tuning in to see what T Mac runs with. I’m hoping it’s Tomald.

From AFL site- THE AFL will revisit names on the back of guernseys for the realestate.com.au AFLX tournament at Marvel Stadium next Friday night.

Just got an email from the AFL offering me a free ticket to the AFLX as an AFL member.

Savouring the delights of Kolkata at present so I will have to give it a miss.How disappointing.

I suspect the ticket sales are not exactly booming.

Whatever happens on Friday night I already know what the AFL and its "broadcast partners" (terrible phrase, by the way) will say:

"It more than met our expectations"

"The crowd (AFL) / viewer numbers (TV) was more than we had planned for"

"We're satisfied that AFLX will appeal to new markets"

And the biggest lie of all: "We see a long-term future for this concept" (which will be proven to be false within 9 months when the AFL announces a major revamp - or complete cessation - of the dying AFLX).

I grew up loving boxing, in large part because of Ali. But  by the time I was an adult I could no longer get passed the barbarity of two people trying to knock each other senseless. Primitive.

UFC appals me. Its popularity even more so (it is huge - i had a beer in a suburban beer barn recently and was told by a bar tender by far their biggest events was UFC fights. A lock out).

But despite its brutality iufc s significantly less damaging to participants than boxing as bouts are short and there are far less blows to the head - which is the cause of the real damage in boxing

Yes, I get that.

I like boxing but your point about brain damage is significant. 

It was probably safer in the days of bare knuckle bouts. Modern boxing gloves protect the hands but allow for heavier and more frequent punching.  In short, greater brain damage. Brain damage that has consequences for the boxer and their families, and to society in regard to health and medical costs.

The gloves cover up the bloody angle.

Less cuts with gloves than without...  the more blood, the more likely to stop the fight earlier.

But with gloves...  bouts go longer,  and boxers get hit much more because of this.

 

Cage fighting, is more gory, for the bloodiness... but there are less head hits that do brain damage, IMO.

 

So do people dislike the bloodiness more... or the unseen brain damage, more with boxing ?

 

Than again,  probably more dangerous is Horse racing,  or other 'horse sports'...  for both rider, and/or horses.

Curious....Do Demonlanders have an understanding at Goodwin and Co's view on AFLX? Do they see it as an important part of preseason? Do they see it adding value or not to what the club wants to achieve with its players? Do i expect to see media reports that we've got an alarmingly high injury list for the sole purpose of avoiding putting players into the AFLX competition? @Satyriconhome you must have a vibe or solid intel on this, with your closeness to the group.

It was up to the individual player whether or not they nominate for the AFLX ‘draft’ so there’s no need to exaggerate the injury list to playing. 

I spoke to Goodwin about the competition, he just said it’s a bit of fun and he was happy if certain players wanted to nominate to play. At the moment he’s must concentrating on the season proper, and as I’ve said all along, he’ll pick his best 22 based on who’s had the best pre-season.

That was the info I had, I know Nev wanted to play, but was 'advised' because of his training load up to now not to

Think most didn't want to risk injury with the competition for spots going to be hot
