The Season Opener just could be the battle for the Wooden Spoon. We could all pray for that to finish off Gil's tenure...

This year bought hope along with it expectation. Mine was, round one versus another 2018 top eight team. We didn’t get it I move on.

Are people really disturbed that we are playing round 1 at home on a Saturday afternoon?? Perhaps they would prefer Hawthorn's twilight game in SA, North's Sunday evening game over in the West or the Saint's 1.10 pm game against Gold Coast on a Sunday lunch time? There's no pleasing some people.

There's not a lot to complain about really. Yes, they stuffed up opening with Carlton. Late in season 2018 I read something (one of the early 'leaks' about the 2019 fixtures) that due to their sustained suckiness, Carlton were not going to be rewarded with as many (if any) prime time evening (read Friday night) games. So giving them the season opener is the reward. Yes, that is [censored]. But at the end of the day it is a home game at a good time. 35-45K if the weather is good.

And Tough Kent. You missed the reward WC get for winning the Premiership. An away trip to Brisbane.

I rang Bet Easy today to aquire odds for the Suns not to win a game next year. I was told I will have to wait until early next year. This year they won 4 games including upset of the year beating the Swans in Sydney. Having lost both Lynch and May I can’t see them winning a game, making history if it is to happen.

Drug cheats round 1 fixture for the last decade (I know they should be grateful to even get a game)

Port Adelaide vs Essendon 2009

Essendon vs Geelong 2010

Essendon vs Western Bulldogs 2011

North Melbourne vs Essendon 2012

Adeliade vs Essendon 2013

North Melbourne vs Essendon 2014

Sydney vs Essendon 2015

Gold Coast vs Essendon 2016

Essendon vs Hawthorn 2017

Essendon vs Adelaide 2018

5 interstate games in 11 years, 2 big vic clubs, and the rest rubbish.

It must be the only exception to the squeaky wheel rule.

Happy to be home on a Saturday arvo game.

...but Carlton.

Seriously the AFL have not learned their lesson.

The opening game of the season should be earned not inherited.

Carlton have not earned the right to play in this game as they have not earned the right to play in any premium Friday night slots in 2019.

Only positive is it's not a sunday game. [censored] off Geelong got the Friday night game ahead of us. The AFL are useless. If we are serious it's a game we should win comfortably.

Heard the news?  The AFL wants 'Carlton to be Great Again'!!!  AFL general manager...Travis Auld:  the Blues were never going to be stripped of the fixture privilege despite their struggles in recent seasons. http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-10-27/afl-reveals-opening-round-fixture-for-2019

Carlton will get other favours one way or another:  The new Good Friday Eve vs Ess game, also a stand alone, marquee Thur night game.  They may have less Fri nights but will still get some, will have lots of Home games at the G vs big Vic clubs (good for revenue) and will get more than their fair share of FTA broadcast time slots eg Saturday night and Sun afternoons.

Yes, some sour grapes on my part when it comes to Carlton's many privileges but mostly I feel for the likes of North, Bulldogs and Saints who are small and get few favours to help grow: Catch -22!!

I think we're misunderstanding the clever thought processes of the Nabobs in the AFL hierarchy. They see a chance to showcase Carlton, a great team in the making, no doubt. Put them in a high profile match against a team they could beat... they win and hey presto they're on their way to being great again.

Mind you, if they get smashed by 15 goals, all of a sudden it doesn't look like such a great plan.

I don't get the angst. It is one round. We get to play at home, against a team we can absolutely beat, to kick start the year with a win. It's great for membership, it's great for the team. If all our members turn up, we will make money.

Absolutely no issues with this game whatsoever.

I'd be happy if all 11 eleven of our home games were Saturday afternoon at the MCG.

I have no issues at all with that fixture - weather should be good, winnable game, no excuses for the fairweather fans not to turn up.

Who is to say we don't have big games to come later in the season - why does it have to be round 1?

Up until rd 22 last season what had we actually achieved?....nothing. Obviously we all want a better draw but I think we need to play the majority of the 2019 season like we did rd 22 - semi before we can start demanding too much.

They have scheduled the men's JLT game against Brisbane out at Casey at 4:10. When the womens team are playing the Dogs 60km away at Marvel stadium 7:15 the same day. Making it practically impossible to attend both. The club will love that....

Hoping we get 2 Friday night games in Melbourne for the first time since 2011.
We may get as little as zero though.

Surely not after being the 4th best team in the league and drawing 2x 90,000+ crowds and a capacity crowd at Optus

Seems like we're getting at least 1 (like 2018) if the leak is legit. We should be rewarded with at least 3. I would love 4. Will probably be 2. I'll be ropeable if we only get one.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
