Declan Keilty has been offered. And accepted. A 3rd year on the rookie list.

I'm thrilled for Dec, happy for Drunkn167 and very pleased for Demonland.

Good get Freddy, I actually think we will pay him, out or try and find him a new home for a nothing trade. That would be 11 changes, a hell of a lot for a side now playing finals.

Which could mean some growing pains for the side next year as players get used to playing the game style and with each other.

All very interesting this. I like this continued aggressiveness. It seems very foreign to me as a Melbourne supporter.

So apparently Bernie has put a full time real estate career on hold to accept some sort of role with the MFC next year.

...filling the water bottles according to the man himself.

Good news.  I recon Bernie would make a great water boy.  A real win for team moral and culture.

Hmm, something is brewing, thought Smith and Keilty would be upgraded personally.

I believe you can have 38 main list spots with 6 A rookies or 39/5 or 40/4. So they might keep the flexibility until the draft period. Given cat A players can play without restriction these days I don't think it matters much.

At Casey?

Or maybe they don't. That's just pizzing money against a wall surely. We're going to have enough lockers to fill surely .

He's probably been told to have a good look around.

Keilty and Smith have been offered and accepted by who?

I’m a little confused!

I thought Bernie might be our new runner too. Maybe crossy is moving into the fitness team full time

Depends how many best 22 players are traded in.

Agreed. If they are that keen on him just pay him overs on a shorter term deal via free agency and ask him to take a cut on the next contract. We'll have a truck load of cash if hogan leaves.

Like Bugg and many others across the years, Gaff is going to be a fringe cringe for several years after his king-hit incident; his onfield presence will be tainted and an exercise in shame; his form will start to severely fluctuate; he will be a target for aggressors and an assortment of 'heroic' acts; in short, he will be only 50 per cent of his former self as a footballer. Do we need to carry that?

Sounds a bit over the top and dramatic to me. That is based purely on speculation and what if rather than the reality of Gaff being a quality player in the AFL for half a decade. He stuffed up on one occasion and most people will move on from it. If he's mature enough he will move on as well.

It's interesting that you compare him to Bugg. Did you ever consider that Bugg is just not up to it as a an AFL footballer and therefore we moved past him being selected in the side after we improved and moved past him?

If you are going to compare him to others why don't you compare him to players such as Brereton, Lockett and Diesel Williams? Probably because it doesn't suit your argument right?

That was one of my 2 options.

BTW, a payout is usually a saving on the full fee.

Possibly correct, but he is not in that frame of greats that you mention. Those three had talent in buckets and let such talent overcome their lesser moments; whereas Gaff, unfortunately, does not strike me as a player so capable.

So if he was more talented he would be ok. It's not anything to do with his mental capacity?

Are runners allowed to say to the umps "what the truck was that?"

What do rookie listers get paid, roughly? Just out of interest.

Bloody hell! Hard graft. Can they be paid more (tim smiff). What if they play Seniors, do they get more (match payments).

Do they get VFL match payments?

We introduced about 3 this year - Lever, Fritsch and Spargo. Wouldn't expect much more than that this year.

Kent is outside my best 22 but he is definitely in the squad of about 30 who can play at AFL level as required by injiry and form.

Hogan is the only core best 22 to be traded or retire.  I could see some subset of Kent, Tyson, Frost, JKH, Hunt traded, Bernie retired, and they are all 23-30 for me.  So there will be important spots to fill.

As I posted before.  We could run with a primary list of 38 instead of 40 particularly with T.Smith, Keilty and Maynard all on the Rookie list and mature enough to play in a pinch.

Looks like we will have a lot of development spots to fill.

Short answer is yes, they can also be on a higher salary than the minimum rookie contact, which I imagine they would be

Possibly.  If you listen to all the murmerings, the AFL wants to cut down runners time out on the ground, but I guess that just means that the runners have to be more efficient and effective when they are on the ground between breaks.  I also recon that Bernie would be great in some kind of game day coaching role with our mids and or forwards.  Could see him either on the bench providing coaching to our young brigade when they are resting during a rotation or picking up the nuances of how the match-ups and on feild positioning in the clearances is working out on game day.

Whatever his role, I'd be rapted to have him around the club as I think he has that near perfect nexus of being all of a smart and canny footballer, driven for sucess and great positive/fun loving attitude which would make him a great asset to have around the club.

...perhaps there is also some canny finacial thinking on Bernie's behalf as well, as the real estate market isn't exactly tipped to be all roses in the imminent future.

Yeah Tony Lockett really struggled after smashing Peter Caven, only kicked 440 goals after that! ?

intereting this could be a similar scenario, Lockett smashes caven, moves to Sydney, continues to have a stellar career post move.

gaff smashes brayshaw, moves to Melbourne, has a stellar career post move?

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
