It's finally over people. Time to move on.

Thank you Jesse for your contribution and staying with us as long as you did. From this day forward it's through the windshield and not the rear view mirror for MFC.

Only 408 pages ?

Given his refusal to commit which disrupts forward planning this is the best outcome although he will be missed when he does get on the field.

The nett restructuring is a win for us.

Like Hawthorn, who in my opinion paid ridiculous overs for Wingard, we're a net outcomes based club who just gets deals done.

I remember when Hawthorn gave up picks 9 and 16 for a 27 year old Burgoyne (got back 24 and 40), who supposedly had a knee that was "bone on bone".   Hawthorn supporters were livid.  He's still playing 10 years later and bagged another 3 flags.

Hogan is immature with concerns re off-field issues and that doesn't help you at the negotiation table, especially when the circus would just continue next year.  More importantly, just when we became the club he hoped we'd become he bailed.  No problem, but that demonstrates to me he doesn't bleed for a flag.

Our list now has never been more balanced in my time watching them.  May will be a gun in a good team and make life a hell of a lot easier for Lever and Oscar.

And if Kolodjashnij can get his body right, and in turn confidence, we've got another very highly talented player on our hands.

Btw, pick 23 in a good draft is nothing to sneeze at.  Taylor can recruit a 150+ game player with a pick of that nature.

All things considered, in my opinion we've improved the list.  But I do rate Weideman more than some on here.  At 21 he has so much improvement left it's not funny.

By the way @Baghdad Bob, there's disappointment and the usual addle-pates that would never know a good deal if it slapped them in the face.

hahaha...i'm really struggling with this one mate, it's  bringing back nightmares of the wizard being poached by Freo. I'm far more upset with him leaving more than anything Josh has said, just deflecting i think, i'm very unreasonable at the moment mate

and he was not half the footballer he was at Melbourne.

The way i see it is he has never really been settled in Victoria  - some footballer adjust here - he was always one contract away from going home.

Yes Peter Bell wins. Mahoney caved but knew Jesse wanted to go home.

We all move on.

Neale wanted to go to lions and was a free agent next year and yet they got a better deal than us, dees caved, we could have got at least he same deal next year. Plus picked up May as a free agent. Maybe then we would have had ammo to target Kelly. We sold the farm to get May 1 year early. Unless we win the flag next year this was a nonsensical trade

If it increases our chances of a flag (which I believe it does), then it was a good trade...

We didn't sell the farm, we just brought our premiership aspirations a year closer...

Do you really think that May would hang around another year?

At a huge cost, if we don’t win we have basically thrown away a pick 6 or whatever we could have got next year to get May 1 year sooner

Your living in dreamworld if you really think that is the way it could pan out next year.

So we have traded out, retired and delisted 11 players, traded in 3 players but only have 6 picks. I'm confused. Do we have 2 fewer players on our list this season?

The overall picture is:

image.png.c1985c0ff1d8ac300dc4cc552190b22f.png

We have 7 senior list vacancies and 7 pics if we need them.  We won't need them if we run with less than 40 players on our list or we take a delisted free agent.

I will update the 'Contracts' thread after pick trading closes in a few days and we know about the length of May, Preuss and Kolodjashnij contracts.

Edit:  Just heard we have done a pick trade with the Saints:  36 and 46 for their 28.

So the above table is picks: 23, 28, 54, 62 etc  Not a bad hand given our earliest pick was 36

?  Who knows there me still be a player trade to be done...certainly there are plans for pick 23 and 28!!  Go Josh!!

They actually didn't based on the points system....

Not a bad outcome; although only time will tell.

Glad it's all over. Time to kick back with a glass of whisky and some cheese and biscuits.

We got May, KK and pick 23 for Hogan.

Huge result.

As good as Hogan was/is and as much as he may turn out to be a star, we had some of our best wins in the last three years without him. Including our final 4 games of this year (2 finals included).

Put May and Lever into that side and Darling and Kennedy probably don't do as much damage. Midfield show up and we probably win.

Bring on 2019

It really annoys me that people have a go at the disappointed posters.  Hogan is a generational player, he held our aspirational hopes for a long time and we became attached to him.  I can't believe there is anyone not sad to see him go.  Those knocking the disappointed are just jerks.

No issue with people being disappointed. We invested a lot in him. Sadly the same can’t be said for Hogan, who was always one foot out the door.

You don’t win flags with players who aren’t committed to your cause.

I don’t think he was going anywhere but dees this year, next year is debatable but unless he wants to come to dees for something other than a pay day he will still be there next year for us.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
