When an oppo player does something dubious (eg. TB and his boot, Dangerfield and his 'ruck' contest), it's always useful to think what your reaction would be if a Melbourne player did it.  In the TB case, the answer is easy - embarrassed.

A guy could get a broken leg might easily playing that way ???

Don’t like it but not sure there is any rule against it as long as it is not high or deemed to be dangerous by the umpire. Otherwise it is a fend using a foot rather than an arm.

'Unduly rough play' seems to cover it. That would be the general one they could use. But as you point out Earl, there's no specific rule.

Apart of martial arts, which sport permits an opponent to intentionally kick out at an opponent? Martial arts don't wear studded boots.

It's a bad look, not in the spirit of the game and his intention wasn't self preservation, which is why I believed it to be within the rules. Clearly he was removing his opponent from the contest.

I reckon he'd stop doing it pretty damn quickly if he was aggressively targeted in the same manner.

As long as it’s not high, why should fending off with foot be different from fending by arm..?

Adds a new dimension and skill to the game... bring it on!

Just watch this filter down into Junior footy, the kids are always emulating what they see from AFL players.

It's a shocking look and if it's allowed to continue it only a matter if time til someone gets a serious facial injury.

Outlaw it ASAP in my opinion.

Don't the have a 'studs up' rule in junior footy?

Love it. Go Greene. The Demons play tough footy, why shouldn't Toby Greene. Game was too soft for too long up until recently. Love it!

don't like it. but it's going to be hard to define it

bit like when they tried to define chucking in cricket and used degrees of elbow bend with a different degree for fast bowlers vs spinners

certainly bringing the leg/foot upto the horizontal seems dangerous and unfair

All true DC, but given the other vagaries in our game (prior opportunity, what is fair in a marking contest, deliberate out of bounds, etc) it is worth trying. I think paying a free against Greene for unduly rough play would send the message that this is beyond wherever the line is.

yeah, and to make it even tougher, why not a spot of eye-gouging, or since that is contact above the shoulders, how about twisting the oppo's balls.   .

Go and play rugby or footy competitively, then get back to me. I have a Masters Degree and am far from stupid, I just hate bleeding heart liberals.

If he is allowed to get away with it, it becomes open slather for all.

As a fend off it's less controlled than an arm.

Only a matter of time then until someone runs full speed into a boot in the throat or the groin.

Totally dangerous & stupid. Has no respect for his opponents at all.

As far as it being a dog act, most dogs I know are more responsible than that.

Sounds like you are a false-flag left winger trying to discredit right wingers.  Keep up the good work.

Typically footy fans. You sort out people like Greene within the opposition team. Look at how Melbourne roughed up Geelong, that is how you deal with bullies. The MRP is toothless. The players only care if they miss a Grand Final because of it. It is a stupid American solution. There are better ways to deal with thuggish behaviour. The players can police it more effectively.

Yes in Martial Arts I have been kicked in the face a fair bit, you get used ti it, but no lasting damage. Plus you learn to block, it hurts less!

Have any of you done anything competitive. The AFLW looks tougher than a lot of AFL now. The women go full on at each other and no one complains. Leave Toby Greene alone. He is the type of player we need and want to keep the game interesting. At least he does not stage for frees like Dangerfield and Selwood.

it's got nothing to do with toughness. we don't need that sort of stuff. toby can adjust and still be a good player.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the

Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded.
