    Not at all. But when a player goes down, it provides an opportunity for another to step up. I mean would Brayshaw have been able to have cemented his spot in the middle if Viney hadnt missed all this footy? I'd love to see AVB get a crack at it. Stayin positive about this one.

    I think Brayshaw would have got his chance he was bashing the door down but I see what you’re saying. Next man up, although Melksham is a loss hard to replace.

    So he did it in the second quarter and they still took the risk to keep playing him, now he’s missed a week? Hmmm, I’ve lost confidence with our medical staff after the Viney debacle. Funny how our injuries have “bobbed up” since then. Maybe Misson gets a bonus for a KPI “games loss through injury.” Some weird injury stuff happening, Viney, Hibberd, Stretch, Melksham etc.

    Our injury list is one of the smaller ones in the league.  Strains, bumps and bruises, especially at the tail end of the season.  Ridiculous calling for heads on the back of this.

    I think Kent gets a run. 

    Melksham is a bigger loss than he looks on paper. We will miss him, he has been very good this season.

    Melk and Hibbo are our only 2 soft tissue injuries, aren't they?

    Yeah and I counted Clarry’s quad scare. Thought Hannan might have been one too but it’s a jarred knee so I stand corrected at 3 soft tissue related issues.

    All I said was that the soft tissue injuries were starting to stack up which is true. Didn't mention anything about having hard luck with overall injuries or anything like that. Medical misjudgment yes but not bizarre over-reaction.

    Misson has played this beautifully in his interview.

    He played the optimistic card by saying that the injury is very minor, in order to appease the supporters.

    On the other hand he never said he'd miss just 1 week so he's covered himself there in the event Melksham misses 3 which is probably the worst case scenario for a minor hamstring strain.

    I've said it before and I'll say it again. Melksham is our most important player. He connects the good work of Max, Clarry and Gus with the rest of the forwardline and for some time has been the best assister in our team. He is also arguably our best shot at goal too.

    I'm very concerned by his loss. If he doesn't play against Sydney, we'll lose.

    His field kicking is superb and that takes a lot of hard work out of the play making, good point AF.

    I reckon you've gone for a bit of hyperbole there, AF.  I agree that losing him hurts, but not to the point that him not playing is the difference between winning and losing.

    However, as posted above, it sounds like he'll be back for the Swans game so I guess it's a moot point anyway.

    FMD we are not having a good run are we? I suppose when you look at GWS, Sydney and Collingwood tho, we haven’t got much to complain about. Yet. I’m sure next week 3 more will go down or something. 

    Actually, if you look at the importance of the missing players at Collingwood and compare them with ours, our injury list is very comparable.

    Collingwood's injuries have been played up greatly for a few years now and yet whenever anyone else has injuries, they're pretty much overlooked. Collingwood are thought to have great courage and system despite all their injuries and yet we played stretches of 2017 without both captains (one of whom was the equivalent of Treloar in Viney), our AA ruckman, our gun CHF and still won many games and were competitive in all.

    This year we've lost our most important KPB (the week before playing Collingwood who have only beaten us in the top 8 - we didn't have time to adjust our system to cater for Cox); another AA defender from last year is injured in Hibberd; arguably our most important midfielder in Viney has barely played any of the season; despite his form, Hunt's injury has crippled our running stocks; and now our leading half forward and the leading assister in the league, is injured. 

    But we're chokers who haven't beaten anyone in the top 8 and Collingwood are a premiership threat who have lost to Richmond by the same margin we did, but done it twice. Both times, Collingwood were lauded for the way they played in comfortable Richmond victories. Yet when we played Richmond, we were without Tom McDonald who incredibly could still win the Coleman despite missing a quarter of the season, and is as vital to our structure as Riewoldt is to Richmond's. 

    I think it's [censored]. Don't get sucked in by the media love for Collingwood. Buckley's been there for years and is only just starting to beat teams in the bottom half of the ladder that they should be beating. They still haven't beaten anyone else in the top 8.

    We'll be able to cover him this week. However, against the good teams, and make no mistake, Sydney are still a good team, his ability to hit targets inside 50 when no one else can is his major asset. Given our deplorable efficiency inside 50 at times this year, without Melksham's kicking, a side like Sydney will make us pay.

    And if I've gone the hyperbolic route, let me adjust it to say without Melksham against Sydney, it will be very tough to beat them.

    Are they? They lost to Gold Coast and their last few weeks have been pretty ordinary, Buddy is playing injured and is well below his best, maybe they are on the slide. Melk is important and every good player out hurts of course but we do have others who deliver the ball well inside F50 - Fritsch, Oliver, Salem to name 3.

      As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

      Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide.       There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
