it sounds horrendous and how the AFL still allow standing room to exist is mind boggling

There are thousands of supporters who, like me, prefer to stand. I've been a platinum member for more than 20 years, as have many of my mates. As such we have access to a seat on level one. Every week we stand. At Etihad we stand on the concourse. I can't watch the footy from a seat.

When the Cats get the funding they will complete their stadium with a stand where the present GA exists. There will be no general admittance area (with free seat). You will need to pay (in today's money) $60 to watch the footy.

It's highly likely that fewer than 2000 tickets will be available to opposition supporters.

I grew up in Geelong and have experienced the standing area many times. I happened to be in Geelong and had the option of attending the match. It’s quite unlike me, but I declined in the knowledge I’d probably end up in the standing area & I’m quite partial to a heated argument.

That standing area is trouble, enables quick trips to the bar and back, and my better judgment dictates that I avoid it, lest I found out I’m not as tough as I think I am.

really?  what rumours?

Ive already got my tickets for the hill so I'll be going regardless.  Been to AO twice and the locals have been feral but fairly harmless. and I know i can drink a fair bit and not turn into a moron

Of all places, heard it on a train from some yobbos. Not going myself, until the Dees win a few.

That fight seems to resemble the sort of fight you would see at an old peoples home. All it was missing were the cane's for pocking from bystanders.

Yep, it seemed like there were more old folk trying to stop it than were in it, except for the foot tapper who couldn't keep his/her balance.

The footage only showed a Geelong supporter kicking a bloke on the ground, and another one taking a fresh-air swing at the back of a Melbourne supporters head.

Nothing much to write home about, but the lesson is this: the Geelong crowd are scum.

I get that mate. I know a lot of people who always like to stand. But after the Hillsborough disaster of ‘89 i am suprised OH&S allow it at any modern stadium.

Some people have a massive problem and much of it is down to the toxic masculinity that is ingrained into our culture. We don't have to be stoning women to death in some parts of the Muslim world to be demonstrating an incredibly dangerous masculinity. Inter-partner violence, domestic violence, spousal rape etc are all big problems in our society. I know because my wife works in the space and I hear some [censored] horrible stories.

I get whiteline fever at the footy and I get very angry. I've never hit anyone in my entire life, but I made a conscious effort at the start of this season to try and control my trigger response to Melbourne turnovers, bad umpiring and Melbourne losses. I'm not perfect and I still get incredibly angry, but I'm getting better and it also means I can move on quicker (this Geelong loss is taking longer than usual though!).

I've been a feminist a long time and the sooner some men acknowledge their propensity for anger and trigger responses, the sooner we can start to eradicate this scummy, lowlife behaviour.

The more we're in denial, as you seem to be, the longer it will continue. The world I want to live in isn't populated with boofhead gronks who want to get around beating up people, because they're too stupid to understand their own feelings.

Wow.

I read some femmo wanky schit before, but this lefty word jumble take the cake.

There are boofhead tough guys everywhere. I cant stand them either. Particularly during a day out at the footy etc.

But to instantly draw a line between tough guy and wife beater is wimp-speak at its worst.

Some of the toughest, meathead blokes I have ever met would not dream of smacking the missus in the gob.

Any bloke who claims to be a "feminist" lol, And "Toxic masculinity"?  HAHA  Apologies if I missed the joke, but SURELY you are taking the pizz?

As for the 'fight' [censored] up "men'

Ironic that someone who gets offended and so draws a parallel for themselves between 'tough guy' and 'wife beater' should tell anyone else to get a grip. Interesting how you equate toxic masculinity with tough guy too. What does that even mean?

Also, you've highlighted 'trigger' as if I've used it in a social way. I was referring to a hair trigger temper, but you seem like an angry little fella yourself, so I'll leave it there.

In broad terms, the problem is you get cretins who aspire to being tough guys, but they miss the mark and are wife beaters.

My girlfriend (a Brit) was really surprised and shocked at how [censored] off I was after the Port loss. Of course I would never hurt her but she kept poking and making fun of how upset I was.

I had to calmly (but still clearly annoyed) tell her to just let me be, just let me be annoyed for a bit and let the frustration out. She then got annoyed at me for that! ?

My point is I’m a very patient guy and I can let my frustrations out in healthy ways. There are too many that don’t, and it’s silly to ignore the fact that heightened emotions from sport create higher instances of DV.

As a child and young teen I went to nearly every Dees game with my dad but he point blankly refused to take me to a game at Geelong.

As an adult, I did trek out to Geelong once and once only. I understood my dads reasons after that.

I saw it all unfold in front of me in a Newsroom as i was recording the overnight feed. Watching people die in front of me ( through a Camera Lens) is a vision i never forget. Standing room was abolished because of it.

I am suprised Jeelong are still able to offer Standing room in that form (Concrete steps)

Sorry for your loss. At least the cops were finally charged.

Prefer my own company at home.

Quite right some MFC members that sit near me are dick heads.  and they are there every home game.    thinking of just a membership next year but never go.   Will always be a member to be part of it but starting to think at 60 years of age TV only

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
