Polec for $700,000

https://www.sen.com.au/news/2018/07/18/north-melbournes-massive-offer-to-a-port-adelaide-midfielder/

Dusty, Kelly, Lynch, Fyfe, Sloane, Gaff and probably many more I can't remember.....

There doesn't seem to be any consistency in what they're doing, just throw cash in a desperate bid to lure any big name.

Good on them for trying, but it's starting to look desperate

It really does seem like their method of recruitment is stick every free agent on a board and throw a dart at it.  Whomever it lands on gets offered a huge contract.  If they knock it back they just take another dart and throw it again.  Rinse and repeat.

They've looked desperate for a few seasons now.

I have a fair amount of respect for Norf, as they never look to bottom out for draft picks, and very often out perform everyone's expectations, but this desperate chase for seemingly anyone available has me shaking my head.

They are not a flag threat, but seem to be targeting players as if they are.

its pretty embarressing.  Any free agents will go to teams in top 4 or with the potential to win a flag. every year with the war chest

North have played at their absolute best this year and will still miss finals.  they need to go to the draft but are too stubborn.  Where do they think Ziebell and Cunnington came from - pick 4 and 5.

Why would you wanna recruit a bloke from interstate who's already left one club because he was homesick?

McClure talking drivel.

Sam Manure I'm going to call him from now on.

It’s a smokescreen...

come out and say they are chasing Polec for $700k while voligoursly chasing other key players out of the media’s eye.

For the same result - nobody wants to go there.

Thats about 25% overs for him. He aint that good.

They want/need a profile players, to attract attention, public interest.

Also they need to park some salary cap somewhere, as they try to increase leadership on their list.  they can't over pay underdeveloped kids.

Where do they go when over-payed-underdeveloped kids, improve;  and want more???

Also they need more interest from the footy world.  I wonder if they are becoming more irrelevant in Melbourne ?

Yes mate we all understand that, but there's no method in what they're doing. A KPF one week, outside mid the next, winger the next, etc etc.

So they're hoping for profile players.   This seems to be the method...  Broaden your thoughts, look outside 'your prism', to find the understanding.

_ there is ALWAYS reason.

What is it you don't see here?

Free agency doesn’t help clubs like North or Saints or Suns and even us, they need to throw big $$ and get lucky, good luck to them. I hope they do land someone as they have proven everyone wrong this year.

And the reason is they are desperate

I wouldn't describe Polec as a profile player. He is a 15-22 player at a good team, not top 5 at an average one. $700,000 is top 5 at a club money.

no desperate. pricing competitors out of the market. they'll land their big fish.

every club is desperate.

but you were querying 'method'.

Without 'desperation', there is no winning.

'Desperation' is not a shame...  it's a privilege.

a sign of desire.  a want, a longing.

Are you suggesting that Melbourne most times, does not have desperation ?

high profile is thin on the ground.

... especially in these days when Drafts & Flooding reigns

They've gotta start/look somewhere.

I'll leave it with ya champ, enjoy. Go dees

Melb needed experience and got Cross, Vince and Lewis. We needed a tall defender and got Lever. We need an outside mid with speed, we are targeting Gaff. We have a method, they do not.

The problem for North is that they’re North. They’re average and they’re irrelevant. Just throwing money at players won’t do a thing for them.

Funny thing is every player they have chased over the last few years has had a thread about them on here. Should we get this bloke, that bloke?

If they have the money, good luck to them. I wouldn’t have a clue about their methods or reasons. If it’s true that we are targeting Hannebery, I don’t understand that either.

I think Purple would refer to that as the scattergun approach. Wouldn't you Damo, hey, hey.

Doesn't he go for North? Probably tell everyone how great the idea is. Was it DB who said we had a scattergun approach? or was it another club? If us, he was right lol

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

The Demons head back out on the road in Round 10 when they travel to Queensland to take on the reigning Premiers and the top of the table Lions who look very formidable. Can the Dees cause a massive upset? Who comes in and who goes out?

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
