WELCOME TO DEMONLAND - ED LANGDON

In part, It’s not a coincidence that our best footy for the last two years occurred when we had a fit VDB marauding on a wing. This season was severely cruelled by him and KK being unavailable.

We’ve now some depth on the wings which will help a lot...

My opinion,

With Langdon and Tomlinson in the best 22     (I hope)   we should be a better side,   Frosty out  makes not much difference but I wont have too much heart  burn watching him  run out of defense,  easier to go to the football, but we still have Omac !

I thought he had improved 2018    not sure now.

Do we get any one else ???

Mahoney made a great trade here. Bell is clearly difficult to work with, he turned down 6 + 2020 3rd for Hill from the Saints when they gave him a deadline and now the Saints have split the pick with GWS they will be miles apart on that trade and Hill is in contract. Meanwhile our business is done with Freo.

A whole lot of extra highlights of Langdon not in the Demons video.

A lot to like.  Goal sense. 50+ m kicks for goals. Stronng overhead, and under physical pressure, marking. Ability to get on the end of possession chains and also find himself in space (ie not squeezing a kick out while under pressure).

Welcome to the club Ed!

He's EXACTLY what we need. I've been a fan for a few years, and he is one of the best wingmen in the AFL. Statistically, he is virtually identical to Brad Hill, actually edges him slightly, and we got him for a sliver of the cost AND he's only 23.

He could be one of our best trade ins we've had in a long long time.

With Tomlinson and Langdon arriving that improves our best 22, Langdon in particular is at a really good age for us and his best footy is ahead of him.

This is a fantastic get for the club - there's no other way this can be viewed.

Great athlete (speed, endurance), great footy brain (finds plenty of the ball) and is at the perfect age, with a proven track record at senior level (top five last two Best and Fairest).

Langdon on one wing, compliments Tomlinson on the other.  Two very different players with complimentary skill-sets we've brought in for the price of a second pick and some cash.

But where’s that feather in his cap??

It's cut off in that photo. Just a little purple one that sits nicely just out of frame (much to the little man's chagrin).

The probability of the player we like being taken between 22 and 26 and there not being another player of similar ilk that we like being available is a million to one. That part of the trade isn’t even the cream on top, it’s the puff of air that comes out of the can after the cream. It’s zero cost.

Good to have you back, mate. It's been awfully quiet around here.

Today's wrap:

Upgrading a NQR defender who is borderline best 22 when everyone is fit, and who constantly breaks team rules and structures but is exciting, for a top 5-10 player who is only 23 and fills a specific need, for the equivalent cost of ~pick 52.

Today was a win.

Great post. You too are on fire lately, @deanox.

Langdon.  Yes exactly what we need. Run. Outside pace. Run. And Run.  Will love the MCG.  He is a wingman.

(Imo I still don’t think Tomlinson is set for the wing.  He is versatile and may fix a CHB or CHF need)

Tomlinson has identical dimensions as G. Lyon. You might be on the money hete

It's Frost + plastic steak knives for Langdon Rono. How can you not love that?

Because TGR is a troll.

Draft best available and select players for need.

All of a sudden we might be able to win at the MCG. The wings have been our deficiency since Goodwin took over (since 1987).

Seriously, why are 75% of the highlights the goals he’s kicked. We’re acquiring him for his run and carry. I have no want or need to watch him kicking a goal that my grandmother could kick from half a metre out. I wanna watch him darting down the wing and hitting up teammates on the [censored].

Stuff like this annoys me. There is more to the game than kicking goals ffs.

Maybe I am just becoming a grumpy old man.

Because to get to half a metre out to kick the gimme goal he has to run bloody hard, and outrun his opponent. And it makes his opponent a little more wary and defensive.

It will be interesting to see how they fill the other 40% of game time on the wing. Clearly the futures of VDB and KK are still very uncertain but I think if KK comes back they can settle him where he's played his best footy at half back and have him earn a spot there before worrying about the wing again. Meanwhile if Vanders makes it back to fitness they can have him at half forward rather than big midfield minutes. Probably still a need to keep drafting wing/forward kind of players or mids with more versatility.

Still it's far easier to fill in for 5-10 minutes a quarter on a wing when the regular guys do a mountain of running and play most of the game.

Can I add to this, someone with trade value.

The Langdon and Frost trades should be viewed independently and the only real link was our salary cap. We already had picks, so we could have easily used them to get Langdon. And we hardly got that much for Frost anyway (sum of value worth roughly #50).

From a salary cap perspective, Spargo, Oscar McDonald, Preuss and Baker are all examples of our poor list mismanagement, as they are over paid/won’t make it. So I would have pushed one of them out.

Anyway, getting Langdon is by far the highlight of our trade period.

Probably because the social media team make the highlights not so much the recruiting team and it's easy to search through footage with 'Langdon + goal' and grab the highlights than searching line breaking runs throughout games.

Agree on KK. We should avoid drafting outside midfielders though. Better to have too many inside midfielders than miss on our picks IMO.

Yeah sure. I just don’t consider joe the goose goals as “highlights”. It seems like these highlights packages are basically every goal a player has ever kicked and the odd mark and tackle thrown in for good measure.

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol
