loved winning when we were a $1.32 to win, was watching the live ladder, thought we might make 8th but didn't, thought St Kilda showed up today, however if you added up all the ifs and buts, when equalled for both sides, we were still clearly better. Yet again Petracca would have the Saints nashing their teeth. Oliver I love, but am starting to get frustrated he doesn't kick a little more, he would seriously open up other sides, with 10 more kicks per game. Hogan was strong all game, I actually struggle to think of a game he has played better, and his head space seemed much better when kicking for goal, was a Matthew Richardson (on a good day) type performance. Angus has found his mojo in a serious way, will steal Brownlow votes off Clarry this year.

My one whinge - ANB is not in the top ten, but he tries hard enough for mine, I really think there are some pretty miserable folks on here the way they chew him out, because you can't fault his effort, yes he needs to be better with his disposal, but the way he is described, you'd think he wasn't trying, and that is just not true. I can see him as being the first dropped to make way for Viney though, let's just be a little graceful for someone who is clearly a good servant of the club. Salem... hmm Harmes almost did enough to stay, Hannan looks like a threat, and both Vince and Lewis were very solid, Hunt was OK. I think Salem waits another week, then one of those just named).

As Beez said - good on Goodwin for learning the best way to play Leaver, has now played two good games in a row, he also showed why he will never be Tom McD that kick for goal was putrid.

Was wearing my Garmin today, HR didn't go past a 100 felt like we had it the whole way - that hasnt happened since i think bluetooth was invented

Blow fuming, I will be seriously impressed if we can get three wins out of two games! ?

Fair points, layzie.  I get where some are coming from and, as I said earlier, if this had been a normal turnaround for us, and not a third game in 12 days, then I'd be more disappointed with the final term.  As it stands I think we should great maturity in ensuring we killed the contest before they got a sniff.  It's something we haven't done enough of in the past.

If we were playing, say, a Richmond or Hawthorn today then it would have been a very tough ask.  But we got the job done, and did it professionally, and that's something to be very happy with.

Wise even my missus who really doesn't understand the footy that well could see we Were stuffed in the last quarter. Too much negativity on here.

Point of order.

If we roll GC and Carlton, we'll be 6 - 3.

I was feeling disappointed but on reflection 3 games in 12 days understandably they ran out of steam a bit.

But if they don’t bury true GC and The Cheaters the next two rounds I will not be so forgiving.

Great win. I thought we smashed them.

Tyson drives me crazy, he appears to play in slow motion sometimes and gets caught or misses the first option. So often turnovers can be traced back to him. Wouldn’t be surprised if he comes out for Viney.

Hogan was huge. Gawn is AA again. Clarry was phenomenal and maybe a few too many handballs but he’s probably the best handballer in the game so the issue with his handball/kick ratio is way overblown.

Gus is playing like a number 3 draft pick. Looks like a jet.

good times!

ps. Reasonably satisfying seeing the talent that St Kilda took struggling so much. I don’t wish poor fortune on any team but some teams just have to be worse than us.

Agree ANB gives his all, but he is horribly out of form, really needs to go back to Casey and get his mojo back, as right now he looks bereft of confidence. If fit, I would select Salem over him every day of the week on the respective form they have shown this year.

Might not have been among the very best but: Fritch on the wing, the skilled link-man we have desperately needed

It looks like possibly the thinking of some here that he's the making of a very good winger may have been expedited.  Too quick ? Its a question...he seems up for it. Very good skills. A real find ?

Is anyone still questioning Petracca vs McCartin draft order?

Great win today

Now, let's hear all the 'if we were playing a top team.....' posts

@stevethemanjordan - you open the batting

Happy to provide some balance to the glossy, happy-go-lucky supporter posts Jumbo, thanks for the invitation. : )

Yeh, was a solid win with a number of positives to come out of the game. The main one imo being Brayshaw's game in the guts. He plays his best footy there and is of most value to the team there. Kicking and decision making needs some work, but I have faith that he's the kind of player that will eventually become a composed user, like Jones became later in his career.

Those who follow my commentary on Oscar will be happy to know that I thought he had another solid game. Couple of scary moments where for some odd reason he'll pick a loose ball up believing he has half a day to dispose of it. Inevitably, he is pinged for holding the ball. Enjoying that he's generally making genuine spoils at contests and is even taking a couple of quality intercept marks per game. Really good signs for the juvenile giraffe.

T-Mac's inclusion just changes the look of our side in such a positive way. Such a weapon to have and it takes pressure off Weed so that he can go about his business, play some AFL minutes and not feel like he has to be the 'main man'.

Goody is playing fewer players through that midfield mix now which is also helping us big time both with Gawn's connection and continuity with the same group playing through there.

Negatives for me was our clear inability to bury them. Interesting that nobody has commented on the fact that St Kilda didn't have a bench for the last half of the last quarter and we didn't kick a goal from 12 minutes to go in the last. Yeh, I get that we're fatigued. But again it came down to inefficiency going inside 50 and highlighted again an area of weakness.

Also, ANB and Tyson are still two players that we're 'carrying' imo. Both playing in positions they shouldn't be and irrespective of Dom's numbers, he's not doing any damage to the opposition whatsover. One difficult goal on an angle doesn't make up for the countless mis-kicks, turnovers and holding the balls he gets during a game. I really don't know what Goodwin and co see in him playing there.

Looking forward to next week and young Jack's return.

Concerned with Petracca's kicking, it's really dropped off this year especially his kicking for goal.

His set shot kicking for goal is bordering on the awful at the moment.  His field kicking is generally very good though, he was a little off today.

Yes, but ANB for Salem or Viney? isn't Viney due back next week? Who would you choose, I feel that Viney scares opposition players (i really like that) even if Salem is a better kick and has some mongrel of his own.

Agree

But, my god, how strong are his hands?

He'll get his compass aligned soon

Might be the same story against Gold Coast though,. as that will be 4 games in 17-18 days.  We just need to get the win up there any way we can,  nothing is ever guaranteed interstate and they are not terrible (3-4).

Thankfully we then have an 8 day break before we play Carltank.

Two persistent problems. Contested marks and inside 50 efficiency.  Much improved today.

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
