Believing that his punch links into his decision making about his future, is as useful as looking at tealeaves.

FWIW, I'd imagine OMAC is on a lower $ contract to accomodate someone who is locked in...for the next two years...with an understanding that he will bump up in significant value...in 2020.

Again my hunch comes back to Mahoney and his overt statements that we will land 1-2 significant players. The relationships between clubs and players are formed over many many months, not just the last quarter of a year...it'll take more than $ to lure Gaff to North...

My feel is he is ours... and he'll get a good look at our squad again this weekend :)

When did Mahoney say that? I would like to read what he said!

Just have a sneaky feeling there is a lot more to play out on this.

I think we are still a chance of getting him.

Are we playing off for the Andrew Gaff Cup as well as a spot in the GF?

I've just tried to find it online - it was back in april/may this year...  alas I can't find anything.

Happy for someone else to back me up on this one.

Just stumbled across this @demon191919 - if youve got access to the sun....

I suspect this may confirm my memory....

Apr 16, 2018 - Melbourne football manager Josh Mahoney said the Demons would be ... Asked if they would target a big fish, Mahoney said on Triple M: “You ...

My point overall, is that Josh and the club have always been circumspect in what they put out to the media.
I don't think it's such a long bow to say, that by confirming that they're merely  looking at bringing someone in - means they've actually got an agreement in place with said person(s).

Funny, I'd call that the definition of a long bow! ?

Did anyone else notice how despondent he looked sitting in the coaches box v Coll then Simpson appeared and gave him a punch in the shoulder to gee him up a bit, he smiled in response but to me looked like he absolutely did not want to be there.

Fair enough :) " I can see how others may see it's a long bow...and by looking at how the FD have operated in managing past trades since the beginning of the Roo's era...one case would be J Lewis...." I am happy to be wrong (ill be happier if I am right)... I feel quite confident for those reasons outlined above.

I definitely don't think our FD are the type that go publicly stating our intentions or our targets, on that we agree. I'm just not prepared to draw inferences from the silence.

I hope we land Gaff or someone equally exciting.

Sigh... irrespective of what happens this week - we will still have to wait til after the the GF for Gaff to announce his coming to The Dees...

In his press conference, he’ll talk about family reasons for returning, and if questioned, will rave about our list demographic and won’t take any questions re his relationship with Gus.

Mail from high profile player manager:

Gaff will either stay or go to North.

He's getting a lot of pressure from his parents to come home, but is happy to stay.

He won't be going to Melbourne for one reason.  Melbourne wanted to play him as a predominantly outside hard running wingmen and he wants to play as an inside mid.

He won't be coming to Melbourne.

Which sounds a little odd, given that Gaff and Polec would be drafted in by North for one reason only, and that is the Outside hard running wingman roles. Don't know if North need any inside mids currently? Cunnington and co seem to be doing ok in there...

Simpson and co backed gaff to develop that side of his game. Goodwin can do the same with one of our players or bring an outside elite runner in  and condition them into becoming a high pressure tough nut that can get their own footy.

thanks for the mail but that makes no sense.  North are more desperate than us for outside run, all they have are inside mids. No way Gaff plays inside if they trade him in

Haven’t given up hope Hunt could fill that role.

Another outside mid in Hall going to the Roos.

That could be three in one hit.

Appears to be the North way. Throw a heap of promises around and bring in players in a hope it will all work. They have followed the Hawks model but forget that the hawks were the [censored] of the early 2000's and used the draft to a tee. Losing Franklin  was meant to be their down fall!

North can have Gaff Hall and Polec, it will make no difference. They need to move to Tassy full- time, though that will polluted the pristine  Tasmanian  environment.

I am sure if Capper and Mark Jackson came out of retirement they would offer them contracts too!

Maybe Norf told Gaff a fib, once he's there he 'plays his role' as directed by the coach. I can't see Gaff not doing what Scott tells him to do.

I'd say that if he goes to Norf it's because of the massive coin they have offered.

Gaff as well would get the Norf supporters quite excited.

They dont like to bottom out at Norf, do they?

2nd hand mail from somebody at Gaffs management company......Hes coming to Dees.

Look thats what i heard a few weeks ago and it wouldn't surprise me at all if he comes to MFC. Its all played out very much the same as the Lever scenario did, if you ask me.

.... and lets face it at the end of the day you play the position that you are told to.

We all know how it worked out for Howe moving to Collingwood, he wanted to be a forward, thats why he moved. Roos had him pegged in defence prior to leaving us. Howe goes over,.... played a handful of games in attack, Buckley moved him back and it was apparently a 'masterstroke'

I'm fairly confident we are still in the mix for Gaff, and thats purely based on the fact we are still in the finals, we are an attractive team with a huge upside and future. We won't offer the money that Nth will, but we will offer a better chance for a premiership which is a currency in of itself.

If you are correct and he leaves Eagles but for North, then it would lead me to believe that it is only about money and that we elected not to, or weren’t able to match North’s offer.

If that is the case,  that would lead me to believe that we have identified another player we want.

Do people really think a move to North would be all about money? Not exactly bottom feeders. They showed a lot of promise this season and along with Polec joining is have them pushing for the 8 next season.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
