Brayshaw was blocking Gaff from running. Under tribunal rules that's in play and it makes sense with how this occurred. If the ball was 1m away he wouldn't have been blocking and scrapping. Don't get fooled by Ross Lyon's emotions.

175 games for West Coast without incident and Adam Simpson clearly holds him in high regard. If he wants to stay there they won't change their offer to him one cent.

Joel Smith was dumped in a crude and possibly illegal tackle and is currently having reconstructive collar bone surgery. Should that be a case of assault as well?

You were making some sense until the last paragraph. Last time I checked, tackling was an instrument of the game and punching was not.

IMVHO this was a lot worse than Bugg

Bugg threw a reckless and overzealous arm blindly backwards at someone who was at him from behind: Gaff threw a very deliberate punch to a players face whilst face on, knowing full well what he was going to hit.

IF, IF there was any justice, integrity and impartiality in the match review process Gaff would get 6-8, however he will get 2-3 to enable him to participate in finals.

Prepare for weasel words and double back flip standards.

2-3?? No chance, even for the protected ones...

You really want Jones to move to the Gold Coast don’t you. It’s an odd obsession.

Absolutely. He looked him in the eye and went BANG.

He didn’t miss

I bet he will get 3-4 weeks. Probably 3 so he is available for finals. The justification will be that Brayshaw lowered himself slightly as gaff swung his arm and I think he hit him with the base of his thumb - not the knuckle part of the fist. Therefore he will argue that he was seeking to shove him forcefully in the chest. Not saying I agree with this, but this will be the justification as to why it’s different from Bugg

(as opposed to the real reason which is that Gaff plays for a marquee club, has no history of being a pest, and the AFL wants the best players in its finals).

I love my brothers dearly but I don’t think someone punching them is any worse a crime than if that same person had punched someone unknown to me. If I could move on from a mate punching a random, I could also move on from a random punching a mate.

I also reckon I’d be able to pretty easily push it aside enough to be professionally civil with the player. There’s no requirement for Gaff and Brayshaw to be best mates if they become teammates.

I accept my perspective isn’t universal though and that most people are a lot better at hanging on to grudges than me.

Anyway I hope I’m not seen as endorsing the punch. I’m definitely not. It was a reprehensible act.

You are right and are more evolved than me I think, (it's not a matter of love, it is silly to chest beat about who loves their brothers more), I watch a bloke, out of play, spear tackle my brother over the boundary line onto his head (may have mentioned it before) knocking him cold - I still wouldn't shake his hand 8 years later, and I'm not normally a grudge holder.

Are you preparing us for Christian’s assessment.

In play, accidental, good record, repentant, Downlow contender ...... (forget high severe contact) ........$3k fine, or, if suspension unavoidable for outside pressure considerations, apply the unwritten ‘who plays next rule’ .... oh, Dees in 2 weeks .... one week.

It's "in play" to king-hit someone in the jaw and cave in 4 of their teeth because they're "blocking you from running"? Must have missed that in the rulebook.

Yeah, clearly he's just faking it. Why the [censored] would a coach be upset that one of his players had their face caved in by an intentional punch to the jaw 100m off the ball, right after seeing the kid's distraught mother on the way to hospital?

Fair's fair though. No doubt you'll be the first one to criticize Simon Goodwin if he shows an ounce of emotion if such an incident ever occurs to one of his players, yeah?

I probably wouldn’t in your shoes either to be honest. In retrospect it’s impossible to know how one would react. I can see your point of view and the one I put forward now.

He is a mate of yours isn’t he??

Stop trying to deflect what happened. I saw it live on the Box.

It was a King Hit to an opponent, who was not expecting anything of the sort. It was off the ball

it was a filthy dog act

nothing more or less

Just like Jim O’dea and John Greening in 1972.

John Greening never fully recovered

There’s no way he gets off lightly. I’m fully on board with the protected species conspiracy theory, but not for head punches, out of play, when serious damage was done. The AFL will (hopefully) be well aware of the backlash it will get if it is soft on the player in this case.

I used to be the same as that with the 'one club thing', etc.

But I'm thinking of Jonesy and his tenure within the AFL, as well as this Club, and how it can cover off Lever.   And do all it can to realise its dream and to finally achieve it's aim.

Jones'y could help the club do just this.   By aiding May to come here.

And in the process, help the game itself in a big way.

I can’t even fathom the idea but I respect your opinion. You’re entitled to have it, not going to attack you for having a different view.

It’s similar to Barry Hall, he got 7. Game and players should’ve evolved since then and AFL are “apparently” taking head knocks seriously since that incident. Brayshaw has 4 caved in teeth and a broken jaw and will miss the rest of the season. Should be 8 weeks IMO.

Agreed, this is one incident the AFL (thankfully) cannot just sweep under the rug. Unlike all the other dirty laundry over the years...

Totally agree with your initial assessment but.

This kind of action needs to be eliminated from the game

I hope you guys are right and I’m wrong. It will be fascinating to see how it plays out on the next 48 hours

Hate the tribunal. Yellow and red cards like rugby. Straight match suspension for a red card. Players can police the dog acts between themselves. The tribunal system is [censored] weak and is the softest, silliest part about AFL. We need to focus on the games and the players, not the periphery nonsense like fixturing, rules and tribunal decisions. Could not care less what Gaff gets. He has to live with himself for being a coward and he should pay Brayshaw's dental bills and apologise to his family for his cowardice. Weeks is no punishment.

Punching receives a fine from the MRP. Or sometimes no fine at all if minor force. Unduly rough tackles receive suspensions as well. Players are constantly belting elbows in to each other, throwing swinging arms in to tackles and crunching don't argues in to the chest or head. Gaff's was worse than that but I don't agree it was a simple stand and deliver punch. It was a wild lashed out round arm.

I'm not saying Gaff shouldn't get a lengthy suspension but I thought it was an in game incident and not a completely vicious one that had no context in the game. Barry Hall's was worthy of criminal charges. Bugg's wasn't and I don't think this is either.

If you watch the replay you'll see that it wasn't 100m from play. Gaff was right near the play and you'll see the umpire calling play on to the player with the ball. That's what I mean by getting sucked in to Ross Lyon's emotions.

Of course Ross is emotional, but that's why we have a tribunal and why courts have independent judges and juries and it's not people with close relationships who get to decide on the punishment of someone else.

I criticised Goodwin last year for being too harsh on Bugg. I though he and the club should've done more to defend Bugg as a good guy who made a costly mistake. Instead we went down this line of Bugg having to earn trust back from other players.
