I have mentioned this before but i see one game looks, especially in Smith's case where he is likely on his last chance, as a horrible option.  Players coming from the lessor standards and scrappy ovals with the 'generally' less manic / pressured style of VFL, should be given at least 3 weeks to find their feet if they haven't spent much time in the AFL in recent times prior to the call up IMO.  The frenetic pace and increased pressure (less time/space) is supposedly a big step up for most who aren't used to it if you listen to some of the seasoned players talk about the differences.

Obviously if they have two shockers in a row it's going to be a hard ask for the FD to extend their stay beyond 2 weeks but i think you get my drift.

Only way T Smith plays is if Hogan doesn't get up.

Tough selection again this week. The selection panel got it right last week. I did not like the look of a team with Fritch, Hannan and Spargo in it or with Lewis, Vince and Jones in it....but it shows I know very little.

Putting that aside, we have one, at least, forced change with Salem out with a sore thumb. His replacement would be simple with Petracca coming in but he is no certainity to pass his fitness test. If Petracca does not get up then Wagner gets back in.

If Hogan comes out with soreness then I would like to see T Smith get a run.

My gut feeling is that T.Smith and J.Smith will come into the side. We will confuse the oppo. with Smiths and McD running around. Interesting to see as it stand we have pick 43 available to us,perhaps there is another Mac around !!!!!!. Whilst going about nutten much,what is the status with Viney's younger bro?

I have no probs with playing 3 talls as long as they are putting on fwd pressure 2 talls inside 50 and one outside as s hit up players, no probs at all.

I've got nothing against him. I think he was simply taken as an understudy to an aging back up KPF in Pedersen.

He doesn't have the tricks to play KPF in the AFL and he won't get a go with Hogan, Weideman and McDonald, so they're trialling him this year as a mid. 

I reckon McDonald's emergence as a genuinely good KPF will seal Smith's fate, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him get a game if we've got some injuries.

He may not make it, because he is just into a 2nd season in AFL preseasons and development, as a mid 20Yrs player.  But He should have been taken on as rookie, years earlier. Naturally very powerful.

But he came around at a time when the mortons and bennells were getting about, and outside run run run was the call cry.  I hope he gets a go and makes a big impression as I think he can be in the Archer/Rooke style.

 

Pre making it, I bet those guys were labeled 'Vanilla', as well.

But he is up against it. I agree.

 I see him in quite a different role to the traditional key tall forwards,  and who's to say he cannot play back as well.

I suspect he is a bit like most young men of his age (indeed as i was) and is still relaxed about things generally, of course we may be mistaking his chirpy relaxed and cheeky style to mean he is not putting in 100% however I suspect Goodwin would be onto that pretty quickly.  I suspect the reason JW was moved on was that Goodwin felt he would always just rely on his talent and didnt push himself hard enough.

There is a reason why many great AFL footballers have come from the country.  Tough, no frills upbringing, lots of no nonsense adults, and a strong determination to succeed. 

That does not preclude private school boys from making it.  Toby Greene went to Wesley, Jack Viney to Carey, and many others from Xavier and other schools (often the benefit of sporting scholarships).

However, the key attributes needed to succeed go to the core of the person-

A strong desire to succeed.

A single-minded obsession to be the best you can be.

Leaving no stone unturned in pursuit of your goal.

Willing to work on all aspects of your game, particularly any weaknesses.

A preparedness to take that extra step in training, lifestyle, injury management etc.

To word as hard as you can on the training track. With the analogy of athletics, "to race as you train."

Discipline, will, resilience.

To be fully professional in all aspects of your chosen sport and life. 

To be well grounded.

Learn from your mistakes.

I also think he's gotten ahead of himself. I get the impression he thinks/knows he's an A grader that will soon become elite, while in reality he's overall output is that of a B grader so far. For example, he's missed far too many shots for goal this year.

I like what he's produced so far, but do think he's overrated in context to his performances, especially to start this season.

I remember a host on either SEN or 3AW mentioned that Petracca was aiming to be a Hall of Fame player. That pricked my ears.

Lastly, I can't believe I'm saying this but I feel Salem is a bigger loss than Petracca (assuming he doesn't get up this week) for the time being. We'll miss Salem's solid ball use while Petracca's can be a bit hit and miss.

Thanks for the reminder.

As you know, since those days, I have lost my way. I found there are very few reasons to continue living. The thought of a warm bed, a loving woman and a bottle of liquor no longer interest me. The beast has been tamed. 

Living in near isolation, the lack of companionship has meant that my writings on this site tend to ramble. In fact I forget what I have written within 5 minutes.  If I do reread my comments, it is mostly with embarrassment.

My comments on this site are just a way of passing time. However, I am attracted to the passion, the obsession and sheer craziness of the characters that inhabit this place.  They remind me of some of the characters that I have met and written about.

His first three rounds I seem to recall he had very solid matches.  The next two, well obviously the whole team was done like a dog's dinner.  Maybe he bit off more than he could chew and is now licking his wounds.

Every dog has its day though and I'm sure he will be back on Tracc, maybe as soon as this weekend, with another 'best in show' performance.
