Red and Blue realist 2,063 Posted April 5, 2018 Posted April 5, 2018 Next they'll be introducing flashing goal posts, less numbers on the field and rectangular playing fields 1 1 Quote
Dee Zephyr 19,320 Posted April 5, 2018 Posted April 5, 2018 Huh? Radical idea due to the “Travel Factor”? So when an interstate team is the second seed and forces a game three, do they not travel more? Quote
Mazer Rackham 14,972 Posted April 6, 2018 Posted April 6, 2018 Inside Gil's head, right now: "Terrible idea! Americanisation of our game ... imagine having three games. Three games of 90,000 people at the G ... all buying pies and chips ... I mean the gate takings would be incredible, but ... terrible idea. The TV stations would love it of course. We'd have to charge them a lot more for TV rights. Hmmm ... but terrible idea. We'd sell lots of advertising too. Maybe get special "grand final series" sponsors in. At a premium rate. Hmmmm .... terrible idea .... hmmmmmmm ....." 1 1 Quote
TRIGON 4,821 Posted April 6, 2018 Posted April 6, 2018 Hmmm and we could MAKE them play any dead 3rd rubbers...more pies, more chips. Quote

Look the people that run our game are obsessed with american culture and sport. Sheedy is one of the culprits and was probably behind naming one of our clubs the giants. Our game is uniquely Australian in the way it looks and the way it's played and why they want to make it look and feel american is beyond me. Quote
Watts Jurrah Dunn? 735 Posted April 6, 2018 Posted April 6, 2018 If it helps shorten the season to a fairer system where you only play every team once, I'm all for exploring it. 3 Quote
PaulRB 6,435 Posted April 6, 2018 Posted April 6, 2018 I agree with you WJD. if we moved to - a 17 game home and away (each team once) - a final 8 finals series - a Grand final 2 or 3 game play off, may work. Although, some poor bastard team and their supporters will end up being absolutely flogged twice in a two weeks, which would be horrendous, most likely us, and I couldn't cope. 2 Quote
Goffer 256 Posted April 6, 2018 Posted April 6, 2018 Travel factor? That didn’t stop the Crows, Brions, Eagles, Port or Swans beating Victorian teams at the MCG, Adelaide choked hard last year as did the Swans before them, Hawks 2013-2015 we’re simply the greatest team of all time no one was beating them on their day and lest people forget Sydney managed to beat them in 2012. Keep Grand Final day, it’s our unique day of days much like Super Bowl or the All-Ireland Gaelic football final, the game that makes the country stop. Quote
Robot Devil 1,895 Posted April 6, 2018 Posted April 6, 2018 Three servings of Meatloaf? No thanks. Quote
DistrACTION Jackson 10,749 Posted April 6, 2018 Posted April 6, 2018 There is absolutely no need to have a 3 game series in AFL. If other teams feel the Grand Final should be moved to different States then I guess that could be explored, but having a sudden death Grand Final is so much more entertaining. I don't think I could even be bothered watching the other 2 games unless we were playing. 2 Quote
Guest Posted April 6, 2018 Posted April 6, 2018 Ugh. Fake news. Anon club official says it might happen one day. SEN and Fox run with it as they have the most to gain. Quote
Gorgoroth 13,220 Posted April 6, 2018 Posted April 6, 2018 Complete and utterly stupid idea. The AFL will reject 3 and make it 7. Quote
bush demon 2,209 Posted April 6, 2018 Posted April 6, 2018 (edited) Six finals games in a row for most teams to win the flag, and the last round is usually a 'final' as well. A war of attrition, pointless and unnecessary. Edited April 6, 2018 by bush demon Addition. Quote

Play each team once; twice is unpractical in this expanded competition of more than 12 Victorian teams. So every other year the team that was last the away side,,, gets the home game. In Grand Finals, it should be the away team that gets the first home Grand Final. With the 2nd Grand Final at the 'G'.. and the 3rd, if necessary. And it does make cents. Quote
Demon Disciple 12,537 Posted April 6, 2018 Posted April 6, 2018 yeah, yeah.......................................no. Lets not forget that between 2001-2006, all premierships were won by interstate teams. The way it works now is fine, the GF is virtually a neutral game given the amount of impartial corporates and neutral supporters that attend. The MCG is by far and away the biggest ground in the country, so logic implies it should be held there. It's the way it's always been and it works, if interstate teams don't like it they should've considered not entering to competition. The beauty of the GF is that no matter how good the team has been all year, they still need to turn up on the day and prove their mettle. Quote
Demon Disciple 12,537 Posted April 6, 2018 Posted April 6, 2018 “If the non-Victorian clubs work together as a block, that’s six of them. That’s a strong force.” Wow, someone can't count. Last time i checked there were 8 interstate teams. 1 Quote

Maybe they consider Swans and Lions to be quasi-Victorian teams considering they have a larger supporter base in Vic from their origins. Edited April 6, 2018 by Robot Devil Quote

Ironically, while the best of [insert number here] model is used for US basketball and baseball, the game most closely aligned with AFL (in that it is a body contact sport called "football") only has one Superbowl. Adam The God 30,746 Posted April 6, 2018 Posted April 6, 2018 Terrible if true. But doubt the big Vic clubs would let it happen. Quote
