Changes v Brisbane

Recommended Posts

My 2 cents in reverse order of disposal count:

Jake Melksham: I was pretty underwhelmed by Melksham's performance yesterday, especially in the final quarter. Looked cooked - no run, no dash, couldn't deliver any of his outside 50 on the run darts I've come to expect from him last year. Looks like he needs to hit the track again. OUT.

Jeff Garlett: Had a bad game, being our leading goal kicker last year, my vote is keep him. Especially up against a Brisbane side full of young defenders with small bodies that he can out manoeuvre and out contest. Zach Tuohy and Harry Taylor are elite, big bodied backmen. IN.

Mitch Hannan: 1 Goal 1 Behind, 9 disposals. A solid warning here, not his best game but still young, has the potential to perform well against a Lions side of youngsters like himself. IN.

Jake Lever: Just a case of noobishness for him - first game with a new team who play completely different to Adelaide. Will find his form again, maybe played off HB where he started last year with Adelaide? IN.

Bayley Fritsch: Performed exactly how I'd expected him to perform. Young, I think we should rest him this week though, so we don't cook him for round 3. OUT.

Neville Jetta: Out marked just about every time in the second half. Looks like he's lost his leap and spoiling ability that showed so strong last year. Could just be a poor game for him, stellar performer in just about every game last year, performs are vital role and can lock down some of the best forwards in the game. IN. 1st Warning.

Oscar McDonald: A lot has been said about O Mac, so I'll say this: Still obviously a young player, showed some strong form and looked improved over last year at times, only to disappoint again when its counted. Could excel against a young Lions side, IN for now.

Christian Salem: Laid some solid tackles, but as some others have said, 12 disposals isn't enough footy for a Mid. He can play some beautiful footy, and has a beautiful kick. Needs to start on the bench rather than as a dedicated Centre. Can rotate him out of the Mid and HB. Unlucky OUT.

Cameron Pederson: Suffered from a case of over utilisation I think. Up forward, down back, at the contest as a Ruck, as a Mid. I know he's a designated utility but when we played him forward last year for a spell I feel like the position clicked for him. A Ruck/HF mix for Cam I think will see him return to form. IN.

Alex Neal-Bullen: 2.0 at games end with 15 disposals. A decent day for a youngster of 35 games against an experienced and bigger side. Whether I'd keep him at HF is another thing though. Like Salem, should start on the bench for depth and rotations until he's more experienced. IN, with a Warning.

Josh Wagner: So much improvement in this guy - some less than stellar moments but I stopped cringing by the 4th quarter whenever he went near the ball, cause it wasn't the instant turnover I'd come to expect - close to a 60/40 split effective use/turnover ratio which is big for Wagner. Laid some outstanding tackles, and generally used his body well. That being said, playing him in the Mid was a mistake, needs to go down back again. IN, with a warning.

Corey Maynard: Dig a good job for a quarter on Gaz - not bad for a kid in his second game. Ran out of legs in the end I think, but to lay 7 tackles for a game is a solid effort. Should be rested this week though, no need to over-cook him, we have the depth. OUT.

Jesse Hogan: Was it just me or did Jesse appear down back way too often yesterday? Took him away from where he plays best for too long, Jesse was nowhere near goal too many times - he has the body, with the endurance now, to play as a mid/rover but still excels as a Full Forward. Play him as that or don't play him at all. Let's hope he can kick a bag against Brisbane again. IN.

Bernie Vince: STARTING HIM ON THE BENCH!? Anyone else think that was ludicrous? He is a starting C/F if he's playing, end of story. Didn't have the influence on the game as we'd come to expect - may have done a better job as a tagger from the outset - definitely if played as a defender on their talls. Poor game from a solid contributor, we still need his experience. IN.

Jayden Hunt: Had some good run and carries but looked like Geelong were counting on us using that as part of our game plan and planned to limit it accordingly. Just a poor game from a solid contributor. Tough game took it out of him at the end, as we saw last year could've made the torp from outside 50 but tiredness, pressure and being rushed made him fall short. IN.

James Harmes: Poor game from a solid tough nut, who can lob darts at goal most games. Unlucky to be 0.2 at the end of the day - as with the whole team, needs to be able to handle expectation and pressure. IN.

Max Gawn: Seriously unlucky to miss that goal - but as an article I read today pointed out - Gawn regularly misses shots from that exact position, so he was just true to his form (laughs). Will bounce back, and an obvious IN.

Michael Hibberd: Below par game for him, had some stellar moments especially at the end but I feel like our back line just haven't gelled with Lever yet, but it will come. IN.

Jordan Lewis: Undisciplined at times, which was poor. Could see him attempting to marshall the defence in the second half but maybe players didn't hear him? IN for now until he cops a suspension, then drop him a few games after the suspension to cool his jets.

Christian Petracca: Missed some crucial goals, but can't really say anything else, obvious IN.

Clayton Oliver: Match high of ten tackles, plus a goal, plus being our second best ball getter. Enough said, IN.

Nathan Jones: I was worried about Jones after watching the JLT series. He looked cooked at the end of both JLT games and I'm aware he was having back spasms during the pre-season. Combine the two and I was worried he was not going to be up to standard - but this is why he is our Captain. Didn't deliver any seriously uplifting plays like he's capable of (back soreness still maybe?) but a solid contributor with no question of retention. IN.

So where does this leave me? Well, this is what my 2 cents worth thinks we should take on Saturday:

B: Hibberd, O-Mac, Lever

HB: Hunt, Wagner, Jetta

C: Jones, Lewis, Tyson

HF: Petracca, Pederson, Hannan,

F: Garlett, Hogan, Bugg/Kent I can't decide who should be given a chance here. zzzzz

FOL: Gawn, Oliver, Vince

I/C: Harmes, Frost, ANB.

People definitely have a diverse range of views, I wonder how much is influenced by where you sit at the ground, vs watching TV and just some players being easier to recognise others! Still I shudder when Wagner gets the ball, reminds me of Matt Jones!

Coaching was average, when Geelong skipped away in the 2nd Maynard seemed in at almost every centre bounce and was often joined by one of our 3rd tier mids, as Geelong had Ablett and Selwood in the middle. It was poor coaching.

We also seemed to stop running in the 2nd, a Melbourne trait for way too long.

I’m still not sure why we seem to have 3-4 guys jump up in a pack going for marks so often and only one player down.

Hopefully it was just a bad day, at least 10 if the players had really bad days. If it keeps happening, we need to weed out the guys who play spasmodically, one of which I’m worried about is Hannan, great skill but goes missing a lot.

Still after over 50 years I will be cheering on the Dees next week.

My are so many expecting Tyson to be added this week?

it seems he was left out because of his reduced pre season and that he had not enough game time before the first match.

He has not played since so he has had no chance to increase his game time.

If the stated reasons are correct then how does he play next weekend?

I expect we will see, Hannan and Salem out for Brawyshaw, Tyson, Bugg (pick 2). I don’t necessarily agree but think Maynard and Wagar  did what was required from the coaching groups pov, that been 1 getting to the contest and 2 putting their head over the ball. Personally I think that is to dogmatic but that seems to be the way of thinking right now.

Surprised how many want Wagner dropped.

His second half was actually pretty good and he hit the majority of his targets. I think some of you have made your mind up about him and can't see the good stuff he did.

Out: Maynard, Hannan/Fritsch

In: Tyson, Brayshaw.

I the future sometime, I'd like to see Brayshaw down back.  Asa hair happarent

Can't see many changes, although there is a strong case for five inclusions;

1) Angus Brayshaw - even though Goody didn't say so, I'm sure his wisdom teeth removal was a factor in his omission. His last quarter against the Saints pre-season was unbelievable and he has the ability to play pretty much anywhere. He has primarily been training with the midfield group and that's where he should play much of it.

2) Dom Tyson - overlooked for Maynard because he isn't noted for applying a hard tag. But our link play wasn't as good without him.

3) Tom Bugg - after a fantastic pre-season was left out as we opted for two fellow left-footers who are far more exciting - Hannan and Frita. Will Goody again opt for both livewires ahead of Bugg's tackling and niggle and stronger presence in the face of two-on-one situations?

4)  Sam Frost - yes we know his disposal can be a bit dodgy, but if we are going to go man-on-man - as we did in the first half against Cats - then we need pace down back for when they get through our press cleanly. Lewis' professional free (and resultant stupidity mouthing off) was a classic case of not enough genuine pace down back on the last line. But if we are playing a spare down back (like we did in the second half), then we don't need Frosty and it will be a low-scoring grind. Coaching choice.

5) Billy Stretch - beats me how we left out one of our best running linkmen after such a strong pre-season. If Salem has to miss (after effects of injury?), then Billy's the obvious inclusion to play the wide roll. And Billy's kicking now is elite on most occasions.

As I've said elsewhere we now have a squad of around 30 players who are all AFL-worthy. It's a question of which ones each week and I hope we rotate a few players in the first few weeks and particularly when we play Essendon on an Anzac Day-shortened break.

But my guess is that Goody will be stubborn like he was last year when he left Melky down back for six weeks and kept Weid in the side for the first four games. So I expect an unchanged line-up from him. But there are others on the selection panel and maybe he will listen to other ideas.

He played youth early part of season last year?

Is he doing the same again?  The future?

I'm OK with Salem, and Fritsch, but maybe Stretch fits in somewhere, if one misses out. Possibly for Hannan?

I would like to see Brayshaw roaming near our defensive zone. I don't really want him in-under.

We could have used Frosty last week, as much forward intercepting the ball to make a contest and bring the small players into the game, as down back.

From all reports OD , Tyson was having one of his best pre seasons and only missed JLT 1 and a couple of weeks of training. He played JLT 2 and a Casey game the week before round 1 in which he was supposedly BOG.

Compare that Lewis - 1 quarter of football in JLT 1 due to calf.

ANB- AFLX and JLT 1. Week off training due to groin/thigh.

Garlett - JLT 2 and a Casey game.

Bugg and Brayshaw played AFLX , JLT1 and JLT2 and couldn’t get a look in. That’s a lot more game time than a couple of names above.

His upside is so good that we need to persevere with him.

Like Brayshaw, they both need to learn to get the ball more.

i agree, we do need to persevere with salem. however, everyone (including him) needs to know he's not a protected species cos of his foot skills (that we very rarely see, cos he can't get near it). he seems to be constantly chasing opposition players as they stream away...

We will lose this game.

I'm predicting  a very rough start to the season, with a 1-4 record after 5 games before we thump Essendon in round 6,  get our shite together and end up making the finals.

We’ve harped on disposal efficiency many times before and it looked like he had a few howlers throughout the day but he was our highest on 93%.

It contradicts what we see. Petracca for example went at 58% for the day and he clearly was one of our best for the day.

Or the fact you don’t like him as a player and therefore anything he does will never be good enough.

As they say the grass is not always on greener on the other side.

Maybe we shouldn't give credence to what "disposal efficiency" measures.

I have liked him in the past. There were a couple of games last year where he looked extremely slow which suggested he was playing injured. But he seemed to have his pace back this year. I just think there are two players who should come into the side in Brayshaw and Tyson both of whom are better than any of Wagner, Hannan, Fritsch and Maynard (and perhaps a couple of others). Wagner seems more dispensable for mine because either Brayshaw or preferably Lewis can play HBF better than him.

Let’s not let the facts get in the way of your opinion.

It depends a lot on what "disposal efficiency" measures. For example, does it include a disposal which hits a target who is under immediate pressure and so we subsequently lose possession?

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
