Are you talking about the same player as everyone else?

We do need more speed, but don't need another ball butcher and turnover merchant.

Hartung may be something to look at as a small forward to complement Jeff Garlett.  Didn't stand a chance of getting that role with Puopolo and Rioli around.

Closer to goal the turnover factor becomes less of a problem, but speed to get out the back is important the way the game is played today, as we have seen with Jeff doing it so well.

I trust Jason Taylor and the team to do the due diligence, and if he is what we need then......

I reckon that is spot on. He may be quick, but he isn't very effective. There isn't much point being quick if you are just going to turn it over. I haven't been impressed by Hartung at all. He needs to learn to use his quickness in congestion (get the ball out of a pack and run). Needs to kick better as well. I am not surprised he got delisted.

Garlett's skills are insane though. He is very gifted, and has tremendous goal sense. Hartung is neither gifted (skills wise) or goal conscious. Garlett is also better in close. I don't think Hartung would compliment Garlett at all. ANB would buy and sell Hartung around goal. I suspect JKH would as well (but I wouldn't go out on a limb with that). Harmes loves a goal as well.

Don't know much at all about Hartung, but it's nice to see some love for ANB.

My brother was on to him early on, and I wondered what he smoking. He seemed to come on very quickly this year, and by seasons end, I actually though he has one of the best "footy brains" on the entire list. Always looking for, and generally finding an option in better position, even when he could be forgiven for having a ping himself.

I see him as starting 18, with a full list available.

I suspect the speed issue is something we'll look to address in the draft, Hartung i don't think fits the model for the type of players we want or need.

He's not a competitor, he isn't a good tackler, he's ball use is very poor at times and his only real AFL asset is his speed, which i also think is overrated.

Heard that the Lions are his likely suitor.  Also Weagles may be interested which may be due to the running space available in the West.  #nocontestedfooty

He fits our urgent outside run and speed need and then it gets down to whether his kicking skills are deemed good enough.

I'd be happy if we took him as even if he is a bit of a bust, he improves our depth, but Tubby Taylor would be a better judge on this.

I don't want any player who is a crap kick

That is why Hawks got rid of him.

Honestly what I have seen of this guy was a good hard running attack on the footy . Small sample size though.

The running spaces in the West is a myth. Subiaco (which wont be used anymore) was longer than the G but not as wide it's why the forward press, full press and web defences Freo and Meth Coast adopted between 2011 & 2016 worked

More the surprise is why they recruited him in the first place, given their penchant for kicking skills and competitiveness

We need icing on top of the cake. Hartung doesn't cut it. A Hawk reject from a club which has ambitions for a spot in the finals 2018. Surely tells you something.

I've made my opinion clear near the start of this thread and enough agree with me...can we just stop talking about this phoney who goes to water under pressure.

I would be astonished if in the same off season we dropped Jack W that we picked up this [censored].

Agree. He a fast running & aggressive tackler but a kicking muppet. Not needed here.

The Billy Hartung post is even more boring and unnecessary than the Jack Watts post.

The only difference is I wanted Jack to stay.

Billy H? A Thousand times NO.

I can't believe I agree with @picket fence

But if we trade JW and pick up Hartung then I will join @picket fence in the angry emails to the club

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
