It's starting to get towards the point of handover, but we should also remember how the James McDonald situation ended and I'm pretty sure we wouldn't want a repeat.

On the other hand Jonesy needs to be a realist. He's done a great job for us and should be afforded dignity when the time comes.

I don't think however, that all involved , club, players, coaches supporters, would potentially want to see a situation where Jonesy's form could see him as a ' lame duck'  co captain in the seconds.

Bit of open ,sensible discussion between Coach and player required to avoid complications down the track.

Its been done ok at other places Hawthorn  for example.

Might be getting close to transition Jonesy.

This now makes 4 demiwits who voted for Jones to relinquish his captaincy when not meaning to.

That would make 67 for him to remain against 52 to go.  56% to 44%.

If such an important announcement comes from Demonland, he wont even need cross bench support and his position is safe for next year.

You can add me to the list of those who voted the wrong option.

i don't think we're dimwits for being misled by directly opposing questions in the title and poll..

Poll result is now worthless as I'm sure many others did the same thing.

On field Viney may not need Jones, but Jones does a lot off field that I would prefer not to burden Viney with at this stage.

I think it was Luke Hodge who wrote an article outlining an average week as a captain. The demands out on their time for additional meetings, etc are crazy!  It's a wonder it's not a ten man job.

I think Jones has one more year in him as captain and then it might be time to hand it over to Viney, who should be in his prime by then!

Jones is smart tough and skilled. But listening to him I just wonder if he is able to motivate?

Viney looks like he would be a better motivator for mine.. jut my opinion.

But motivation is exactly what this list of players need.

The have talent, it was evident in the amount of games we got back into.

It’s the starts that have been really bad and ultimately killed us, that is where motivation can turn things around

According to that Goodwin chap the dual captaincy is his preference and the one that the club will use ( as long as he's there is the unwritten in that sense )

So irrespective of what i think Jones is likely to remain in that job probably til he retires.

This irks me. It tells me Simon is a shlthouse chess player as hes deprived himself of choice and change. It also means if Viney isnt afield we have the same ol same ol no real leadeship problem during games.

Daft is as daft does.

It raises the interesting question, that if Jones was to step aside in a year or two... who joins Viney as the co-captain???

It certainly does.

This is the least of our problems and if anyone at the MFC deserves a Captaincy, be it Co or otherwise, it's the Jones Boy.  He has carried this club through some horror years and i haven't seen his 'effort' ever falter, even through the horror years of Mr Cowboy Neeld.

Viney equally as deserving and i would happily put Mr Lewis in as VC.  If i could have three Co Captains (ok that doesn't make sense!) i would have all three.

Our problems lie with...

  • outside run and FINISH through the middle
  • An extra small pressure / goal kicking forward (at least one)
  • A commanding KPF who can kick big bombs from 40+
  • Some aerial contested marking power around the ground;  and
  • A commander down back who can take control.

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
