Weideman needs to focus on building his tank this summer so he can actually run / lead to space and get some cheap footy. So many of his attempts at the mark are from a standing start and then in an effort to reach the ball at its highest point (and often bad delivery) he gets pushed under the drop of the ball.

He tackles well and always taps the ball on to team mates where necessary so I think he has a lot to offer with a good footy brain - not to mention he's a pretty good kick on both sides. Just needs to get to more contests and to get to them first without the opposition affecting his run.

mfc needs to be more ruthless with cutting losses, either trade them before they lose currency or cut them and blood a new kid.. need to learn from stuff ups like trengove and Lucas cook

Maynard looks like a gun he has to be promoted and besides Brayshaw who was injured early the rest of the Melbourne listed players are list cloggers we unfortunately only bat 26 deep, so we have a long way to go depth wise.

There should be an inquisition into how Ben Kennedy didn't get a single look in at afl level this year. Constantly puts his body on the line. Yeah, he can't kick over a jam tin, but his kamikaze attack on the ball and consistent high possession winning should have been rewarded. Can't believe Wagner, Kent and Trengove got a look in and a small forward that attacks every contest like his life depends on it had his cards stamped early.

And for the sycophants that say goody knows best, just remember that Spencer and Tim Smith got a look in before Pedersen and we all know how that worked out.

Totally agree, why Kennedy didn't he get a game this year has got me stuffed, he goes in hard and that mark he took running back was as good as anyone, saw it first hand and he looked the goods, obviously Goodwin doesn't rate him

We need to improve our starting 18 and push our current bottom 3-4 into consistent VFL time. Being the amount of injury our senior core had this year and Vandenberg, McKenna and Garland missed all year with Smith missing most who all would have played significant VFL games. Based on this it is amazing Casey have done as well as they have.

This is simple. If you can't kick, you can't be a professional footballer. Melbourne and Casey are the worst kicks in their respective leagues. No matter how good you are in other areas, it all falls apart if you can't kick.

It is something that has plagued this club, with a few exceptional stand outs, for decades RM.

Corey Maynard is so far and above everyone else in red and blue that it's not funny.

Declan Keilty finally gets a Casey goal.

Maynard will replace / push out Tyson in 2018.

When will our mob learn to turn up in the first half. FFS.

Chook they are probably trying to emulate Goody's game style which sees 2 players start off the back of the square every centre bounce, as per the seniors.

Gifting the mid field advantage, and hence early momentum / extra i50s and scoring opportunities to the opposition.

Works a treat, provided you are one of the opposition's mid fielders / forwards!

There was a very obvious reason he didn't get a look in WJD.... There was just too much class in front of him (see JKH, Stretch) ?

It's too early to say too much on Weideman at this stage, but the major thing I've noticed in the last two years is that he tends to lead himself under the ball, which obviously leaves him out of position to mark the thing. That'd be a major focus I'd be looking at over the pre season.

I agree on the building of the tank as well, although I think he'll need another 2 pre seasons before he can really smash that.

Could not agree more.. not sure it can be rectified

He does not do much leading either

A long way to go.

Objectively other than being one year older this season was a non event for Weideman

Oh for god sake just when the usual hand ringers were taking over the thread, along comes a supporter with common sense and consideration to contributing factors which effected the continuity of the AFL side and the subsequent domino effect to our VFL side.

Cant believe he only kicked 15 goals for the season in VFL...  with 6 coming in one game.

So obviously he didn't practise goal kicking during his 6 week suspension.

Or worse, he did

4 in one quarter...

sadly there were quite a few players who didn't improve or went backwards in 2017, so he certainly had company

Billy Stretch, JKH, Wagner, Kennedy, Spencer, Keilty, Trengove, White, Vander, Fillopovic

Is Neita still involved with Hawthorn?  If not he should be called in to mentor Weid: if he is not available how about Ox?  Looks as if he has talent but needs mentoring.

Keep Ox away, but wouldn't say no to Neita.

Meh.

One side made the finals, the other fell short at the death.  Not ideal but certainly not the worst thing ever.  We're still headed in the right direction.

Towards losing all important games...

I wouldn't delist Vander and Stretch, JKH and I think Wagner are contracted. All are list cloggers but unfortunately we can't get rid of them all. I really hope Spencer doesn't take the 1 year contract we have apparently given him if he can't find another club through FA.

God, why would we contract Wagner.  He is a nothing player.

Our depth is so depressing.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge.
