Watching todays game I was impressed with Stretch's game. He has developed his inside game well over the second half of the year at VFL level. He can still make it. JKH and Spencer were woeful unfortunately. I will be surprised if JKH gets another senior game. Magner has had a good year too and if he keeps developing as he should will get his chance next year. Bugg can still offer something but will probably only ever be about top 26, not top 22. Still you need a top 33 to have genuine depth.

Is it just me or did anyone else think that Magner was particularly quiet yesterday?

You can trade a player that's under contract as long as it's not the first year of his contract like JKH, Stretch and Frost can't be traded.

This does not sound like a rule to me.

The point of the contract is to give the player certainty. I don't think that there is any rule that says a contracted player can be traded without his consent unless it's the first year of the contract.

No player can be traded without their permission, full stop.

It's generally something that is not done, and would be terrible practice, but there is no specific rule against it.

What player would sign a contract immediately before going to another team? They would surely need or at least want to negotiate terms with the team they'll actually be on the list of.

It just doesn't work logically.

He was our top possession getter in the first qtr and kicked a goal from a stoppage.

Went missing with everyone else in the 2nd though. Still learning and will be better after another pre-season, only his second so far.

I was surprised by Richmonds depth. It's always hard to beat a VFL side that is still alive in the AFL as all the seconds players still hold hope to get a game in the seniors.

They had Conca, Lloyd, Griffiths, Miles and a couple of others. That Morris is a dog. His only skill is smashing into blokes trying to injure them. Sheedy would recall him to his Grand Final side just to go head-hunting.

Who is Magner?

Definitely he and a dozen of his brothers played against the Pies.

Pardon my ignorance, and it's probably already been explained, but if Garland was to retire, or have his contract paid out via his AFLW role, I assume he is still a listed player, a la Chris Mayne?

Now that all of the MFC commitments for the year are finished we can get some clarity on who will be told they don't have a contract. With some players already posting holiday snaps it must have been difficult for MFC casey players yesterday against a full strength Tiger VFL unit.

In some ways this means the players have their break, return for the B&F and start preparation. Those uncontracted players not renewed will probably be public by Wednesday and the minimum delisting is 3, I think. I cannot help but think Spencers ordinary final series may cost him a 1 year extension and I am not sure he will have suitors unless he already knows his destination and didn't want to get injured.

The silly season is about to begin

No. If he retires, he goes off the list. His salary will probably still be counted in next year's cap though.

Thank you. Six games in the last two years. Personally I'd be hoping he pulls the pin.

Think you'll find 2018 might be close to Pedo's last.

Why would that be?

Stretch turned 21 on Saturday. Has time on his side and should make it.

The penny has finally dropped. I didn't get what you were all going on about.

I might have meant Maynard, but I think you already know that. We did have a Magner on our list a few years ago I think, but really thats no excuse. I think I might just wander off into the off-season now.

Deslistings this year are fairly obvious. Just have to wait on Spencer to see if he leaves or stays - I would happily take Trengove as a FA if we could land him. Releases TMAC to play forward and if we get Lever we have rebuilt our backline.

Think its important from a cultural stance to honor contracts - I would not be keen to see him retire unless his body does not come up.

Could Richmond have just saved Trenners from a delisting?

With the Tiges small forward success and following on from the Doggies last year, I reckon there' a chance that our list manager will be rethinking his quota of big men.

At present we have four dinosaur ruckman and only one worth playing - Gawny. Having three back-ups is way too excessive, especially when we showed mid-season that playing a more mobile tapman like Pedo or T-Mac was just as good because of their combativeness on the ground.

So by my reckoning, I can see two of our dinosaur back-ups being delisted - Spencer and Flipper. I know Filipovic has been injured for much of the year but I was more than a tad disappointed in him at training pre-season and just think we can afford only one project tall tapman to back up Gawny and even though King has done very little so far, he looks the part and deserves another year.

It also leaves us with another spot on our list to go with Kennedy, White and Hulett (confirmed outs) and Lumumba on another planet.

Then we have Kent and Kennedy-Harris, who both could be part of the Gaff and Lever deals.

Even with Maynard and Joel Smith coming on board the true list, we'd still have two picks in the draft, two in the rookie draft and one or two Category B rookies to go.

And that's before a decision on Trenners and Garland - both of whom are fantastic, loyal clubmen who you want around and both make a huge difference at VFL level. If we are desperate for picks at draft, then both could easily be rookied.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
