Vandenburg rookied?

We have to de-list VDB and then re-draft him in the Rookie Draft to achieve this.  Other clubs have 2 free swings at him as a De-listed FA and then ahead of us in the RD.

The players that you consider this strategy for are players on the Senior List that have contracts that you should honour but that you don't really care one way or another about retaining.  You guarantee you'll rookie them if no-one else picks them up.

Many here were suggesting we do this with Hunt two years ago but we because we valued him we retained him on the list. If we value VDB then we should retain him.

Aren't Kennedy and Kent contracted to the end of 2018?

Apart from yesterday's delistings, the other players coming out of contract this year are vandenBerg, King, Vince and Weideman.

I'd expect a year (or two) extension for all four.

Thought you had to have 10 years at the club?

Though thought these vet contracts were being phased out?

A 1 yr contract should get Vince to 100 MFC games barring injury.

We'll have the best looking father sons going around.....

Kennedy final year was this season 2017.

all over for him.

Sad end to the career of Trengove. His first few years were great and showed such promise, to the point he was made the youngest AFL captain in AFL history. He was neck and neck with Dustin Martin for the first few years, but then injuries ruined him. Supremely talented player, cross between Jimmy Bartel and James Hird. A friend of mine who's currently an assistant coach of another AFL club said he was viewed by most clubs as one of the best young talents in decades, leadership, skill, bravery, he was the full panache. Shame to see his body let him down and prevent him from fulfilling his potential.

Thanks for all the hard work Trenners.

Great post. Too easy to forget how damn good he was in 2010 & 2011.

What struck me about Trengove in his early days was his sheer footy intelligence for such a young player. He so often seemed to be in the right spot at the right time, or was able when in heavy traffic to hit up the teammate in space. This stood out in that game against Port in Darwin where he alone out of all the much more experienced players (& coaches) fully grasped the situation at the end of the game. At a stoppage near goal when scores were level, he went third man up to hit it through for a point (both of which you could do at the time) and got us an unlikely win.

There was another game, I think it was against Essendon, where we had been several goals behind but came back in the third quarter and beginning of the last. Watts had the ball on the wing, kicking into a congested forward line and Trengove timed his lead into space perfectly, then drilled a difficult set shot to put our noses in front. I think Essendon seized back the initiative and won in the end, but just that characteristic of being in the right place at the right time and executing a difficult task at a critical point in the game was just so typical of Trengove in his first & second years.

I always hoped that maybe this level of footy smarts might overcome the constraints of his injury, but those constraints were too great in the end.

Would trengove be rookied?

I think this needs to be a clean break between us, he's not a part of our future. That is now a stone cold (sad) fact. I hope he gets another chance somewhere.

A bit hard to delist Lumumba when he's not even on the list anymore....

The sad thing is that he has been on our list all 2017 but threw in the towel after list closure and left us short.  And some wonder why he is so disliked by many here - I can assure you all it has nothing to do with race

The definitive definition of list clogger.

Hopefully.

Depends entirely on how trades etc pan out.  If there's no categorical need for him to do so for 2018..then he remains. If a spot is required, I'm sure the powers that be will whisper...having padded out his new role of course

No need to pull the trigger yet.

After the trade season is over he will be delisted. Just putting him on the trade table to see if someone bites.

I don't know why so many people want Vandenberg gone. If fit I think he is in our best 22.

Trouble is VDB is always injured.

l cant see Weideman making the grade.l have watched him on a number of occasions and aren't convinced.Definitely would ask Garland to retire.Vandenburg gets one more season to impress.Kennedy is a good Vfl player and thats it.Another one to release.

Off the list:

Trengove. Spencer. Hulett delisted. White delisted off rookie list.

Garland likely to retire. Kennedy likely to be final delisted player.

Kent to Eagles for pick 48.

Add to the list:

Jeremy Smith cat-b to be promoted.

Lever to Dees for pick 10 & 27.   Dees get pick Lever and pick 53.

Draftees 45 (Tim Kelly) 48 (Charlie Thompson), 53 (Frisch). Delisted free agent (ruck option such as keegan brooksby)

Rookie pick 10.  Seb Williams.

Indeed. Despite being on the sidelines for 2 years, he's one of those project players you keep around for the extra year to see if they can show you again why you initially had faith and selected them above others 2 years earlier. It would be an absolute waste to delist a player who's struggled with injuries. Look at Alex Johnson, Daniel Menzel and Morabito, generously given many years to come good

No way we could get Lever for that. It will take pick 10 plus a very good player or two first round picks.

Re Garland...

Why are so may of the belief that a 29 yo, contracted, KPD would retire??  Has he given any indication that is anything other than committed to rehabbing and getting back to playing?

Those advocating for a us to delist him; I think delisting a contracted, long term servant of the club, after he's missed a season due to serious injury would be unconscionable.

Not delisted but retiring and receiving his full pay.

Colin played 6 games in 16 and obviously none this year due to injury and will be 30 at the start of the next season, coming off a knee reco.

If the club is of the opinion that even fully fit he is not in our best 22, then retiring and maybe playing a year or two at Casey,  combined with coaching, is not unconscionable at all.

It is actually helping him with a future career path.

You don't get full pay upon retirement though... and the career you've worked towards your entire life towards is over.

Yes you do if the parties agree and if not, you are not putting in as much either with less pressure on lifestyle.

All AFL careers end sometime and to get to 30 is pretty good in the AFL.

  • REPORT: Fremantle

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
