Wasn't able to go to Melb today for the game, had to watch it o the AFL Live app. It's always a distorted view when you aren't at the game.ย Was disappointed with Harmes, thought (hoped) last week may have been the breakthrough game. Hoping that those at the game can tell me that he was working really hard and just couldn't get into the play. I think Wagner's had a fair run he needs to go back to Casey. Ideally Stretch gets another run, not a fan of in one week out the next.

Garlett has had a run of personal stuff, with trips back to WA.

Perhapsย heย is not 100% atm (mentally)- only a guess. ย He is too good to leave out, he just needs to rediscover his mojo (and his kicking boot). ย Definite in for mine.

No perhaps...more... definitely.ย

Last week ..off with fairies. This week ย quite alive and into it at times, but more sparks than a fire.

Probably enough in the bank. ..but shakey ground for mine.

Kennedy, Maynard and Weideman for me and stick it up em:mahoney:

Viney inย

Stretch out

If Viney not fit, no change.ย

Can we bring in Lumumba for a farewell game?

Out: Stretch. A decent footballer but canโ€™t currently keep up with the speed of our game (see also JKH). And itโ€™s not really something you can pick up in the 2โ€™s. Crows and others would be watching closely.

Next cabs off the rank: Viney, Maynard, Bugg, Watts (the latter around the middle and wings).

Out: Wagner. Took a while to build form and clean up his disposal earlier in the year but has gone back to square one after a return to the VFL. We donโ€™t have the time to persist and be patient right now.

Next off: ย Frost/Salem

Slated Out: Hannan. Canโ€™t see him being dropped as heโ€™s getting back up to speed and provides a heap of forward pressure. It would be foolhardy to replace this with Watts.

Next off: Bugg

Potential Out: Bernie.

Potential replacements: - Viney, Maynard, Bugg, Salem.

Others called for: Tyson, ANB & Garlett. Tyson isn't getting dropped. Garlett and ANB are down on touch atm (as was Frost and I also think Hunt and Hibberd currently to a degree) but it's not a matter of effort. Petracca found some extra mojo today without a rest. These other players still look close to being damaging.

Gut feel: Viney will be given another week and Maynard will come in for Stretch for added grunt. Frost or Salem for Wagner depending on our preferred tall/medium defensive dynamic, but I don't see what Wagner offers that Frost doesn't. Yet, I also don't see Goodwin desiring three KPDs or for Tomald to push back into and mess with our forward-line structure. Bernie will survive the MRP, and Watts hasn't done enough to resume a role as a forward target. Hannan will stay and Melksham and Harmes will keep Bugg out.

Conclusion: Stretch for Maynard (and maybe Frost for Wagner) with some Demonland underwhelment and serious MFC selection headaches for an elimination final should we make it.

I think we've missed Watts, especially today. ย However, that's an in-form Watts so if he's ticked the boxes with the coaches, then he's a must to get a run before the finals. ย

Same goes for Salem. If he's in our finals plans, he may need the run as he missed this week due to suspension and then there's the bye the week after.

My understanding is that Goodwin has already ruled out Viney for next week so Billy can have another week to possibly hit his stride.

Wagner has seemed off the pace this year and makes way. If he struggling for touch and space against Brisbane, then he's not ready for finals pressure.

I agree with you about Watts. However, listening to the odd response by the coach in the post-match media conference to a question about how Watts went at Casey makes me think he was none too pleased.ย

Goodwin was frostier than a bona fide Sam Frost on the subject. It was quite something to listen to. Won't be bullied into bringing Watts back and it may even provoke some extra stubbornness re.his ongoing omission.

Would be tragic if Watts missed the finals after everything he, and the club has been through.

Did Goodwin suggest it was form or attitude??

Seriously though. ย We play a lot better when hogan isn't in the team. ?

hannans efforts last week when it counted has earned him the right to play the rest of the seaso. drop him? wtf

no chance watts is coming in. its taken goodwin all season to realise pedo is far better and he plays a mans game in a mans body. ย hogan (who I've been critical of) kicked straight today and whilst his defensive pressure is diabolical, i'll forgive him becauae he kicked straight.ย

no chance viney will play.

p.s postersย keep referring to dom tysons disposal %. thats not the issue. the issue is he gets caught holding the ball far too often usually from being slow in the mind to make quick deciosns by hand

out: wagner

in: salem

Frost is close, Hannan maybe unlucky. But watts can play his role, is a better set shot and more dangerous kick inside 50. On watts to make sure he can equal defensive pressure, he does that and it's a big upgrade for me.

Anyone else see watts not making the distance from 45 out at Casey?ย Used to slot those in. Maybe still not confident with his hamstringย

I think he was just sick ofย talking about an individual player instead of the team. He doesn't like to single out any one player especially in a negative light.

Didn't think it was an odd response exactly.

Goody has given Watts plenty of chances to excel already ,without a great response and he'sย is a bit over it.

Pederson has been terrific with fewer chances and now Hogan chimed in . Simplyย they get the job done. Which of these does he push out?

Feel for Jack,ย but not sure that after 150 games he's totally recognised a few things like - ability alone doesn't cut it, he has to be on for 100 minutes, he needs to bring plenty to the table, he should be delivering 3-4 goals every week, his defensive efforts and tackling are sometimes sloppy..

Footy is about taking your chances.

For the moment Pedo has him covered.

An 6ย goal effort or similar in the seconds might indicate he gets the message.

My turn layzie.

Geez, how stupid were we to sent Stefan ย Martin to Brisbane. Max couldn't win a hit out if his life depended on it, he can't take a mark either,ย clearly we kept the dud and we are going nowhere fast with him in the team.

In - King.

Out - Gawn.

ย

Players who have really struggled and should go out are:

Wagner (poor skills, probably has one more season to get it right)

Stretch (excelling in VFL, lacking confidence in stepping up to AFL)ย

Vince likely suspended (also not sure why he often does the kick out, only average at it)

In should be:

Watts (get him to take kick outs, also watch Jeffy improve with Watts in)

Salem (other kick out alternative)

& depending on match ups vs Collingwood one of:

Frost, Bugg or Kennedy (only re Goodwins comments on form & heย has done very well in VFL. Personally don't think his skills stack up at AFL level)

Garlett has to go. Tackles and pressure numbers way down. No desire to win a contested ball and therefore burning chances left right and centre. Taking 2 chances isn't hard when you burn 10.

Wagner wasn't good, but the wing is a new role for him and a very difficult one given the way we play, stacking numbers around the ball and overusing it. He's not a good tackler or a quick chaser but I think you'll find his work rate was good. Not good enough to stick in the team but still a decent work rate. Looked more comfortable when switched to half back.

Stretch has to stay for his work rate as well. Constantly running to open up the far side of the ground, without it we don't get the kicks coming back in through the corridor. He was hesitant to take the game on (again, game plan) but most of his ball and use and contested stuff wasn't ok. Let him build a bit of form until maybe Viney comes back and we reshuffle the midfield.

Out: Wagner, Garlett
In: Salem, Watts.ย

Salem half back, Vince to Wags spot on the wing, let him tag Sidebottom. Watts playing a versatile forward role and moving on to the wing.ย ย

A 40 goal small forward who is mentioned in AA calculations for his numbers? ย He can win us a final. ย

Do we consider recalling Bug. On the afl web site he seems to have had a goodย first game back.ย

ย

Onballerย Tom Buggย returned after serving his six-week suspension for striking Sydney defender Callum Mills in round 15.

The 24-year-old showed good signs in his comeback game with 24 touches (18 contested), 12 tackles, six clearances and six inside 50s.

ย

12 tackles not too bad.ย

My first thought was: "This, if Viney's fit. If he's not, Hannan stays."

However, will we need another tall defender? Should Frost come in? Will Vince be suspended? I'll do a Saty and leave it to the match committee. I understand they have more information at their disposal than I do.

ย

Danger game coming up. It's their Grand Final after allย :P

Let's put the 'iced' in the icing of Buckley's retirement cakeย ;)

Get Bernie and Bugg to annoy the shlt out of them. ( We have replacements ..if neededย ^_^ )

Way back in March we contemplated the possibility of a Demon resurgence after Simon Goodwinโ€™s summer of love.ย Manyย issues at the club had seemingly been addressed, key players were returning from injury and a brand new day was about to dawn. We imagined the coach pulling a rabbit out of a hat. The team would roar up the charts, push aside every opponent and make its way to a Grand Final ending in ultimate triumph with Goody and Max holding the premiership cup aloft under a shower of red and blue ticker tape.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.
