I would be interested to see how he goes against the young Brisbane defenders if chosen this week. The Weed has put up with gorillas every time he's played this year.

The young backs from Brisbane have the potential to be stars but at the moment they are raw and in the same stage of development as the Weed. 

Let's see how he stacks up this week if he plays.

I watched him in the flesh against Box Hill Hawks. Be patient, this guy is the real thing. He needs confidence more than anything. He can kick, he can mark, he's a ferocious tackler and some half decent delivery wouldn't go astray either. And as he grows he'll be able to deal better with the kind of physical attention he receives week in, week out.

Remember, he's a Wiedemann.

Had a couple of chances this year..Has potential and needs to bulk up before he "hits" the big time again..Next year... NOT against Brisbane..We need to be firing and ready to really put in against Brisbane.. We have a habit of slackening off against lower ranked teams.. Definitely do NOT need the "Weed" in there... Not yet learned composure at senior level and too easily pushed aside..

Harris Andrews is an excellent defender with a huge reach and I doubt he'd kick any on him. He might do better on McStay, but not much.

This is a typical post of those critical of the Weed. Not singling you out in particular Doc since plenty agree with you, BUT what I saw against the Aints was that as the game progressed Sam increasingly positioned himself better in packs, working his way to the front. Only one of them stuck but over the course of those four quarters he really seemed to be learning how to set himself. Once more of them start to stick I think you'll see rapid improvement. 

As for the short term, Watts would give us more but given all reports suggest he was OK but not fierce in the twos one week's banishment may not be enough. I'd be happy to see him back but I think Sam deserves another crack rather than have his confidence undermined.

Carltank can have Curnow, I've seen enough from the Weid to know he will be a dominant forward soon enough.

Conversely posters like you think everything he says is right? As has been pointed out he obviously is going to stick up for a young player in public.

What did you think at quarter time when he thought we were doing well against GWS? Did you think those 3 goals would be gold later in the game?

He is either extremely positive or delusional. 

And yes I always want the best possible outcome in every situation, ridiculous concept I know.

Agree, give him another pre season or two and put some games into him next year, similar to Oscar this year and hopefully Weed good to go in 2019!

Some big blokes take a while. Maxy took 7 years. I'd say if he's playing like this in a year then we should be concerned, but I think if he can improve his endurance he could be anything. 

Once he feels like he 'belongs' it could really help him too. Don't forget he missed almost all of his footy 2 years ago - so psychologically he came in wondering.

I agree he just seems to have no confidence which results in him hesitating, pulling his kicks etc

I'll give him another season but if he hasn't improved by this team next year I'd worry that he will never make it at the top level

I remember after round 2 last year, some were calling it that Parish would be superior to Clarry.

As for Weed, it's an interesting proposition.

There have been players we have persisted with who should have been moved on earlier (Col Sylvia, Ryan Ferguson and arguably Jack Watts). There have been others who we persisted with who came good (Chip Frawley, Oscar McDonald, Max Gawn, Travis Johnstone though you could argue he belongs in the previous group). Then there were others who the call was made early on and rightfully so (Jimmy Toumpas, Lucas Cook).

Where does Weed belong in this mix? I would say the second group because of the pressure he applies. It shows at least his attitude is right on game day. That being said, he needs to get his aerobic fitness levels up and he needs  to hit  the weights. Only the club knows if he is doing the required work on that front.

I would love to see him as a version of Cam Pedersen (but with a much higher ceiling). Hogan thrived in his first two year thanks to first Dawes and then Pedo dragging a defender away and making space in the forward line. Dawes was moved on as a) he couldn't play the role of relieving forward line ruckman b) couldn't mark overhead c) could kick two goals in a game at his peak. The Bear probably has two years left in him plus he isn't much of a goal kicker (though he is a handy kick). 

Weed has the potential to have ALL of those shortcomings covered if he applies himself (time is on his side). If he wants that role, application will be what gets him there.

 

Its just still too early to tell. He's basically raw material. A couple of pre-seasons and then we'll judge.

Needs some more muscle and another pre season and he will be right.

I don't think anyone has questioned his ability and what we all think he can be, but he isn't ready to play AFL at this stage.  If Jack Watts put in a 6 possession game every single person media and on this site will be call for him to be dropped.  We jumped on a 10 possession 1 goal game and he was dropped and deserved to be.  However we are looking at September for the first time in a very long time we need to judge who has the potential to impact the game more Weid or Watts?

And the difference in the way Jws possies were used compared to Sws were night and day.

Correct, I don't think the way Sam kicked the ball on Sunday is an indication on his ability to kick the ball, at least I hope not.  We only have a small sample of his kicking ability I hope Sunday was just a bad day

Sam's set shot routine in his debut game was a lesson for all to see, so he does have it in him.

I remain very optimistic and positive about his prospects. 

How good would it be for him to really turn it on against his father and grandfather's club, on a regular basis ?

We have seen his set shot looks OK, we hasn't kicked it enough in general play for us to know if he can kick on the run or away from goals, the couple of kicks he had on Sunday they were shockers

At VFL level his set shots that I have seen in the four games I attended are quite reasonable.

Probably just a confidence thing at AFL level

Next years pre- season comp will be a big test for him.

 

 

 

Sometimes you just shake your head at demonland.

The posters on here questioning Weid are many of the same ones who didn't rate Omac and severley questioned Dannihers ability a few years ago

I think The Weed will be an excellent player for us in the future, but on the edge of potential finals we cannot be complacent.

Weeds aint ready and I want Watts to play and impose himself before a potential finals campaign.

We are dabbling in dangerous waters by not playing him. Period!

I think you can see that he's not kicking through the ball, but is dabbing at it. Probably from the pressure on him to make the most of the one shot on goal he's having per game at AFL level currently.
