Umpiring of MFC games very questionable

Featured Replies

There was one game this year when we got the better of the umpiring, cant remember which, other than that we get screwed over consistently every week.

I reckon the WCE game was OK for us

Not once did I see free kick stats today

Um who would channel 7 rather have in finals?

Team from perth?

Another lowly supported melbourne team

shocking umpire at crucial moments int he game always went against us.

It was interesting.

As bad as we were 1st quarter the umps gave Pies 5 frees and 0 to us.

In the the 3rd the frees were even ....11 each.

IN the last they went back to giving pies 4 more.

HUge impact at crucial times.

WEll...... would love to hear thoughts on today's umpiring.......

Pies player throws it out of a tackle, play on

pies player caught with it, brought to ground, rolls it out to a team mate, play on

pies player tackled as he kicks the ball, misses it, play on

Demons player caught with the ball and it comes out in the tackle, free kick pies.

Repeat

Yes, we let one slip today.

However, will the umpiring be one sided in favour of the Eagles tomorrow?

Surely it's beneficial for the AFL to have a W.A team in the finals (particularly financially). We all know how much they love "equality" amongst the teams.

Hope I'm wrong.

I unhappily predict that Collingwood in round 23 will get as many free kicks as they need to beat us.

Why?

Because Melbourne don't generate strong television ratings.

So I was a little off: they didn't so much give the world to Collingwood, as give us nothing. Same result though.

I really am over this game.

Incidentally, at the other end of the conspiracy theorist spectrum is naïvity.

Perth teams always get a mass amount of frees at home, so yeah Adelaide will get shafted

The umpiring was undeniably poor.

BUT what actually killed us was Jamie Elliott pulling a stack of one in a million goals against the run of play.

We dominated the second quarter, only to have it completely neutralised by absolutely arsey goals. We then missed super gettable set shots. It killed all momentum.

By half time, it was clear we were the better side. But it was also clear that we were not going to win the game.

One of the more frustrating games I have watched in recent times.

I watched on TV and the umpiribg today, particularly at the start of the last quarter, was downright incredulous. I'd love to see the AFL try and explain some of those decisions however we all know they've got a justification for everything.

Pannell.

Enough said.

If we only lay 9 tackles in the first Q, none in the first 11 mins of the game, then I know who I will be blaming for todays loss.

...and it aint the umpires.

5 for first quarter, 5 one handed sloppy efforts for tackles, 5.....

I agree with this 100%, Rjay, but also the umpiring inconsistency is infuriating. On the Monday they come out and can justify every free kick awarded, but it is the free kicks that are missed that are the problem. Oscar's 60 cm 'throw' in the 3rd quarter I think, was pinged, but the other 30 odd throws yesterday were not picked up. Etc etc, holding the ball decisions , once they set the tone by paying a holding the ball, they need to then apply the same standard throughout the game to both sides. This rarely happens, and is exemplified by that ridiculous free from 100 metres off the ball awarded to Brisbane by that idiot Razor Ray.

Agree with the above. The way we started this game ensured that we would struggle to get the four points.

Saying that, from what I can recall, there were three awful decisions within the first two minutes of the final quarter, all of which went against us.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: “Is Melbourne even at the ground?” Moments later, as Carlton’s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demons’ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.
