There are so many things wrong with your logic. For starters, if a quality player who addresses a need becomes available, you make a play for him, regardless of where you are on the ladder. And $700k is not exorbitant. 

Secondly, you want to use that 1st round pick on a classy outside mid. Do the names Morton and Toumpas spring to mind? How they translate from junior to AFL ranks for outside mids, is the hardest to assess. Take a proven commodity in May.

If you think that Lewis is almost done, he has another 2 years on a contract which wouldn't be much less than $700k.

And finally, your offer of $250k for Jack Leslie isn't much over the minimum wage.

We are statistically a 5 goals better team with Gawny and Hoges, I wouldn't be getting to carried away with what we've seen to date. The club aren't going to get involved in bidding wars let's be honest, there is alot of talent on our list best to sure them up with gd contracts. We don't need to throw our cap out of whack with paying overs on players it never works out, were building something don't need to disgruntled group.

If I was a Gold Coast supporter (are there any?) I would have been absolutely ropable. It was a pathetic effort, but of course you only see good in the opposition and only bad in a Melbourne jumper.

May is a much better backman than OMAC. That is reason enough to try and bring him (or any KPD for that matter) into the team, so we can improve as a team.

There are still way too many question marks about OMAC to consider him a part of our best 22. May would definitely be included in our best 22.

We average 4.25 more points per game with Jesse and Max in the team. Multiply by the eight weeks of their joint absence and you get 34 = we're a five goal better team. Spread those 34 points across four games (Freo, Richmond, Hawks and North) and we sit a game clear atop the ladder and I get a job as the club's PR spin-master while BB and SWYL lose their [censored].

Yeh, it was poor. But he has credit.

May IS a good player..a normally very capable FB. Interesting game though yesterday. I still lean more towards Lever.

I think Lever is great, but May is more what the team lacks.

The team already has capable readers of play and intercept markers, albeit not as rounded as Lever. Tom Mac, Hibberd, even O Mac, Wagner and Hunt at a stretch. There are options for what Lever is exceptional at.

The exposure that May would help address is the go to option to purely defend a big forward.

Jack Leslie would want $250k just as a sign on fee. With the new CBA he'd need at least $500k pa to change clubs.

Also, I don't think Goodwin sees Lewis or Brayshaw to be discounted from our future as easily as you do. Vince, possibly after this season.

I have to agree with this.  I think Lever will be a very good player but if I had to choose May would be the one based on what he offers is exactly what we need. 

Usually very good one on one, can take on the big forwards and his disposal is very sound.

Neither Lever or May have the height to match the modern 200cm+ mobile key forwards - fortunately our zone defensive style is the key to guarding those monster talls.

For all our discussion about May, it seems as though the Hawks are the only club being linked to him at the moment.  That's not to say we aren't in the conversation or won't become part of it, but it doesn't look as though we have a huge amount of interest in him at present.

I still feel like we need another KPD, I just don't think it will end up being Steven May.

Yeah I agree with this. I definitely think another key back would boost the team but with the recruitment of Hibberd, the significant development of Frost and slower development of Oscar I think we're in pretty good shape. We still need another tall back to add to our depth beyond Frost/Oscar/TMac. But it doesn't have to be Steven May.

Brett Anderson who's got pretty good sources and is a huge Dees man has been saying for the past few weeks that we're having huge cracks at both May and Lever.

Nobody knows anything, I'm not sure why you've drawn a conclusion from the fact you haven't officially heard that we're targeting May.

Honestly, the only reason these guys get gigs is to spread rumour and innuendo from their 'sources'.

I'm not saying Lever is going. But the amount of times these SEN nuffies like Denham and Smith etc get these things wrong is absolutely comical.

I thought this before the weekend, and given our set up this has confirmed it more so for me, but May while a very good player, is more a stand next to a gorilla and nullify them, rather than fit into a zone and be able to play on bigs and smalls. He is a very good full back, but I don't necessarily see him as also potentially a CHB or 3rd tall. Given we're very much into the zone structure we need guys with a bit more flexibility, Frost, TMac and even OMac can play all of FB, CHB and 3rd tall. 

I still think Trengove from Port might be a better fit to the way we play, plus as a free agent won't cost us as much in what we have to give up. Might be the same $ but no draft picks or loss of players.
