We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

Today we lost the hitouts but won the clearances fairly convincingly but agree Jacobs is another story.  Our midfield needs to continue their good work reading the op ruckmen.

I think we are going to challenge teams simply because our structure now is unconventional and it will take them by surprise a bit.  I'm optimistic on how we match up vs Adelaide.   It will be a terrific game and a lot closer than some think.

I hope so, I'm taking my little bloke for our first boys trip. I've never seen us lose interstate, which included a win over the Swans in 2005 - that's all I'm holding onto at present!!

I think most MFC supporters will agree that  it has been a disappointing start to the season, with what could have been 5 and 1 or even 6 and 0 start to the season, we find ourselves hovering around 3 and 3.

Looking ahead to our next 4 games leading up to the bye, the MFC has a real opertunity to set up a tilt at this year's finals series.  Over the next 4 weeks we play the Hawks, Crows, North and Suns.  Obviously the Crows is a big game that we will do well to put in a competitive effort and not get blown away and whilst I'd certainly be wary of a wounded team like the Hawks, it's not beyond comprehension that we could walk away with 3 wins from 4 starts and really set up the back half of our season following the bye.

The next 4 weeks will give us a real idea where the clubs at i believe.

We've copped some tough injuries and have dropped games - 2 should haves (freo hawks) and 2 could haves (cats tigers)

I think the trend if dropping games will sadly continue. While we have some depth now and a bucket full of talent, we dont have an experienced consistent core of players deep enough to win consistently.

I think we lack depth in our f50 and our d 50 needs more games together to gel.

I think the coaches need to work out their best tem.moving forward and barring injuries stick to it.

Im still hopeful of finals but we need to do well in the next 4 weeks.

If we dont win those two games before the bye vs the Kangas and Suns we dont deserve to be anywhere near finals.

That would put us at 5-5 with a healthy %. (THis asumes we lose to Adelaide of course, which is likely).  Then we have the Pies on QB.

Yep and on form can't see how we would be favorites in both those games 50/50 games at best, both north and suns are in good form, if we lose both then it's season over unfortunately

Not too sure where to put this but did anyone see Jordan Lewis on 360 tonight? Apparently we have won the 4th most quarters this year and compared to every premiership team I think he said over the last 20 years, we are matching their stats apart from in 2 measurements. Would love to know what those two were as he wouldn't say. Don't know if he is taking it up but you can sense the frustration as he said a few times he feels we are really close.

I reckon it's probably turnovers and kicking efficiency personally.

I've revised my earlier prediction and think we may give up two or three of the next four now. Things could get pretty ugly around here and in the media. But we don't get to the finals by playing as we have the past two seasons - by etching out enough wins against the form of our opposition with depressing up-down-up-down predictability. We get there by finally clicking and going on a run against any and all comers - which I'm still hoping we can do at the back end of this year.

We're just so conditioned by mediocrity that we can't imagine something more than just steady incremental improvement is remotely possible. But our best really is just about good enough to beat anyone this year, and if we put it together, we are a genuine top-four team. As a measure, last year there were a number of games where you really wouldn't have given us much of a chance going in - perhaps the Bulldogs, Sydney, WC away - but this week we're possibly facing our only real sense of that. We have other serious tests to come, but hope and expectations are rising.

It depends how simple you want to be.

I dont dismiss you're comment but there are some here (very few of us), that dont get caught up in the emotional w & l debate and wish to look at the side as it currently stands withoit emotion and the reasons why.

Id suggest you continue to post in the post match discussions etc if you want to keep it simple

I dont disagree but accept it's simple analysis

You also dont need to critique everyone else conversation with it. What you accept as success has nothing to do with this conversation. And when I say you i mean the collective generally.

I personally don't want to discuss or read people's emotional stance. i like to assess this team on its own merits for this year or the last game etc.

I am.not inmocent here eithrr but the emotional out crys in many threads are embarrassing.

Id like to discuss this team has been the youngest etc. Or analyse why we are.

Discuss potential vs performance. Eg play jkh over kent.

If u wwnt to keep it simple it's fine but dont waste my time

excuse me..this is a forum where opinions are voiced.

you asked a question..I gave an answer

You invited a perspective .That it doesnt wear with you is up to you. What you read or take in is up to you

You dont make rules. No one does ( other than the mods of course..lol ) Maybe you can put 90% of dland on ignore mate

Here we go  , just for you. Well maybe anyone else who has passing interests .

Jay Kennedy Harris v Kent

Kennedy  is a player who requires anothers play to instigate anything. He seldom gets to an advantageous position. Can, does on a few occasions but emphasis on the word ..SELDOM. He's reactive. There may well be a call for that quality and it may well suit some of what Goodwin is trying to instigate.but whilst at times has shown a willingness to  create "pressure acts" against his opposite number it in reality smacks of being second to anything. When he first came to the scene he had a little bit of a spark about him.  Either the battery's flat of it got trained out of him. Either way as a forward he plays like a slow pack pocket. I just don't understand why you ever have that near the sticks. It seems counter intuitive to the job at hand, which for any team, especially a forward is to add to the scoreboard as that is how the games won.

Dean Kent. Where as  JKH probably takes his job guide too literally Kent probably doesnt pay to much heed to it as he is a 'natural " player who nearly 99% of times seems to follow his instinct. This trait whilst scintilating to watch when on song will incur the coaches ( and everyone's ) wrath when the mojo has gone. What Kent will do though is if possible be first to the ball. His first instinct is to attack, not defend. For mine this IS what you want in a smaller forward. You want an opportunistic player who might try to connive something from nothing and possibly not worry about what if something goes wrong. That he is now being encouraged to accept that it can indeed  go belly up and if youre the freddy responsible  (and even if youre not ) you better be just as quick in snuffing it out as you are to cause it.

Kent is therefor high risk  higher possible outcome . Harris is a dowdy lower risk for little outcome.

Going back to simple, well what is the actual aim of the forward line. What MUST be its priority ?

The game is won by the team with the highest score. Thats not purely simplistic it's the only relevant fact about the game. High score wins.No extenuations apply.

You have to then surely build a team which can score. Kent to me ticks far more boxes than Harris

This was never a personal attack but you have highlighted my point perfectly. Too many posters on D'land post emotional rubbish about how they're offended with the club or other posters.

I just want to discuss the team on it's merits. You pointed out yourself earlier all that matters is wins which is why remarked about simple debate. It's not just about wins. there is 120 minutes and getting in to a position to score is as important as scoring or defending when you don't have the ball.

The point of this thread is to discuss the next 6 weeks.

Cheers for the thoughts on our forwards - I am hoping you also note it's the least experienced lines in our team in terms of games and experience. For mine Kent or JKH is like asking how long is a piece of string. Both offer something but neither have delivered consistently. And I think the inexperience has a lot to do with that

Now we don't know what the roles are for those players and we don't know why Kent was dropped, My opinion is Goody has picked JKH and he shouldn't chop and change. But that doesn't make my opinion right - performance should be rewarded. Has Kent been performing in the VFL to deserve a re-call?

I really hope we can sneak a few victories in the next 4 but no team NO TEAM will just say the Dees deserve this game.

Now we've mixed a few threads all in to one I'd like to finish on topic by saying it's a big 4 weeks for the club if we still plan on making finals

We do know why he ( Kent )  was dropped.  Not executing the Goody mantra.  That's paramount . Thats why Jack was chastised.

Actually IT IS only about wins.. the subplot is how you achieve it.  This isnt about theatre; not about entertainment it's ONLY ever been about winning games.

Perhaps this is actually lost on some.

I disagree entirely that both these players offer something. Thats been the spine of much frustration.

As to the next 4 weeks... every chance we might not lose one. I'll leave it to you to figure out the cryptic nature of that

Unfortunately I feel a 6 game losing streak is coming,..,.  we will all be on suicide watch and talking the draft and is Goodwin any good, but we will turn things around and head into the bye at 5-6 with a percentage over 100.

From there we can launch an assault on the finals.  Its going to be a frustrating and at times exhilarating season.

Well my prediction is so far doing better than I thought...  had us losing the Essendon game.

Perhaps we can be 6-5 after 11 games. This of course means winning all three of the Suns, Kangas and Pies games. All three are 50/50.

Quoted from the linked article - http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2017-05-10/vfl-player-review-round-four

Dean Kent: Dean had 18 possessions, seven tackles and kicked 1.1. It wasn’t the type of game where Kenty wasn’t able to show all of his strengths, because of the conditions. But the one pleasing thing out of Kenty’s game – that we were most pleased about – was his forward pressure. His ability to impact ground balls and put the opposition under pressure created opportunities for us. It’s been two weeks now that Kenty has played the way we want him to. He certainly puts his name up for AFL selection this week.

Someone obvious rates what he can deliver

As I pointed out above some of us like to discuss why things happen and rationalise. For you it's all about W&Ls so be it. But it doesn't make it the right answer

I have never said don't share your opinion, I am simply saying let those who don't want to be simple discuss...

Welll Saturday night was unexpected.

2-1 after 3 games.

With norf, suns and pies left I'd hope to win at least 2 of these but we all.know how melb go with expectation.

None of the 3 sides are push overs on their days. Massive 3 weeks ahead

The next three weeks will tell us how much thr group have matured and if they are ready for finals.

We should all know by now the boys can do it. Getting it right consistently is the next challenge.

Also lets not kid ourselves. After one good win other teams aren't just going to give us w's. For a start we haven't beaten the roos in years.

Big big game next week.

I hate these NT games. They're momentum killers. We generally lose to a team we should beat (that team is always one better suited to the conditions), come back rooted then lose to another team we should beat. I'm sure there's a reason we play them but I don't know what that is.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
