If we trade 2 first rounders and pay Lever 800k the club has lost the plot and is in no way a destination club as they will try to claim.

By my calculations that would make him our highest paid player, and one that has achieved little at AFL level.

It would set a shocking precedent and cause other players to hold out like Martin. I would guess Prestria being offered similar money to him had a major role in delaying contracts throughout the season and then signing for 500k a season above his original offer.

Oliver, Petracca and Oliver are all better prospects and other clubs will be waiting to pounce if this occurs.

He would want to start being a key position player if this happens.

100% agree

if you equate it to lever being paid $670k or so across 5 years - which is what $850k under the new cba equates to, under the old cba - does that make those who are worried about his price feel any better?

670k is more equivalent to 800k on the new cba (20%)

Yes both Olivers are better.

We don't have a proven history of being able to get the 'big trades' done.  Getting what would be two massive trades done in one trade period would be unprecedented in modern MFC history.

One of these is possible and, in Lever's case, looks almost likely.

That's cause many of the 'big trade' discussions are here on Demonland, and Demonland alone, based on "inside words" from sometimes less than credible sources.

Like the Gaff one for instance. That was mentioned where? Once on twitter?  And now we have run with it to the point where some have probably accepted it as something that is actually happening, and would consider it a failure if it didn't eventuate, even though it may never have been on the clubs radar.

hibberd was relatively 'big trade' - all australian defender quality for a second round pick! - and worked out exactly as foretold

Agreed.

What about Dangerfield though?  Or Hurley?  Or Judd? Or any of the other big name players who have been thrown up over the years that we all get ourselves into a lather over?

Dont get me wrong, I see it all as a bit of fun, and quote enjoy reading all the threads, but I wouldn't deem the club to have failed if these fantasy trades dont eventuate, because many are just that. Fantasy.

Likely if I asked most who the best 3 key position defenders are they would say Rance, Hurley and McGovern. Would be worth looking at how often any of them play on the main key forward or even the second one this year.

Maybe we can offer our 2018 first round pick in exchange for a St Kilda 2017 first round pick and onward trade it for Lever, love these future form hedged bet pick swaps.

When was the last time we traded in a top 50 player?  Hibberd certainly wasn't top 50 when we signed him...

He is now.

He is, but his signing was hardy 'HUGE' at the time.  If we land Lever it'll be the first time in god knows how long that a top line player picks us.

I think the new EBA is 20% raise first year but up to 30% by year 3.

optomistic I know

It is also highly optimistic (but I like the way you think)!

Paul Connors spoke at an Old Xavs golf day yesterday and said Lever will be a Demon, and he will be the highest paid player at the club.

He also specifically mentioned that it is a very interesting move as he manages Petracca who, next year, might be asking for similar money.

To land a player of Levers talent you have to pay overs. $800 is as expected. If we want a Premiership and not to continue basking in medicrity we need Lever. Players such as Oliver, petracca and co know this and would accomodate such moves by the club

Then Petracca would want to have a consistent season, and not just patches of promise.

Just a tad overrated on output thus far is Christian.

Hes tracking beautifully.  If he played for another team you and everyone else (yes including me), would be begging for the MFC to go hard at him.

19 disposals per game and 26 goals on the season in effectively his 2nd season.

Compare his numbers at the same age to any of the big bodied superstar mids, and he either stacks up or easily has them covered.  And none of them missed their first season with an ACL like Trac.

If we dont pay him big $, there are 17 other teams that will.

Hope that isn't correct!   Especially as earlier this year Lewis was encouraging the young guys to stick together as a team even if it means forfeiting some money along the way.

We have quite a few top end players to accommodate:  Petracca, Oliver, Gawn, Viney, McD, Hogan who will all be looking for big $$ in the next two years.  There will be clubs out there making big offers to those guys even if they don't have elite years.  Will be hard to keep the team together if they are all looking for near $1m contracts!

And our next tier (Tyson, Brayshaw, Hunt, ANB, Garlett etc) need to be looked after as well.

Im lazy, but isnt petracca one of the best players in the comp for supercoach or whatever points per disposal and also up there for goal assists behind Tex and a few others ? Ie his disposals always hurt the opposition.
