At times in the 2nd & 3rd quarters we even had a 9 man backline for centre bounces.  Having just watched the replay on tv I'm amazed none of the so- called expert commentators picked up on this tactic, and certainly if you only watched it on tv the camera angles have no indication as to just how often this was happening. Would love to see the behind the goal camera footage of this setup. 

At one point during the game, all the players were in the forward pocket up the end where the Saints come out, it was strange to see all 36 players in 25% of the ground.

There were many times when there was no one in our forward half of the ground and I remarked at one point, we better be prepared to run if we clear it out of our backline.

I'm not disagreeing with your appraisal but if we had a fully fit list we've probably got about 30 players who could be described as 'best 22'  ... more to the point is how many players have we got who can play well in 4 games out of 5 or at least play well in 3 games out of 4?

If ANB can reach those heights he'll be in our best 10-14 (if the team continues to play as well as we did yesterday) ... so in an ideal world it would be 'best 13-16' and the rest of the spots are constantly up for grabs. 

Certain other role players and project players pick up spots (Weid,  Oscar and 1 or 2 other young players) Spencer may not be in our best team but for certain match-ups against certain teams, he'll get game time.

ANB should have his eye on a category A spot ... but so should all our players.  Competition for spots is something we haven't seen for a long time and it's a nice problem to have.

Hard to tell on TV of course, but I didn't see any amazing tactical or structural changes.  We just turned up the dial. 

I think we started spreading them out wide better plus we started kicking more.

In that first quarter we had more kicks than handballs.  We overused the footy and turned it over too often.  That ratio changed after quarter time as we kicked more than handballed.  The game-plan is still a work in progress and we'll learn a lot from that game going forward.

Of the role he played I can only see Kent, Harmes, AVB and JKH playing that role of those outside the side. At that output I would play him ahead of all with maybe Kent ahead if at his best. However I think ANB offers more flexibility.

Should have been a free. Two hands in his back riding him to the ground is pretty clearly a free. No where near reportable though.

Kennedy also could play that role but I haven't seen him play well enough to get near the top of the list. He would be on part with JKH for mine.

ANB certainly played well yesterday and he'll need to keep that form up ... when considering his role he did well in tackles, clearances, contested possessions & overall possessions - he also linked up well and ran hard to position.

And he'll know that certain other players are vying for his spot ... all good.

Six or seven years ago I thought Nev Jetta was behind Bennell, Jurra, Wonna and Davey, and would be lucky to make it. Then time on the rookie list and injuries and bulk time at Casey. Fast forward to 2014 when Roos taught him how to defend, when to man up, when to zone off and how to play contact footy. Since 2014 he is a gun and possibly the best small forward stopper in the league. An All Aussie nod would not surprise.

That confident contested chest mark from a wobbly high kick in the last quarter was evocative of Scarlett. (At least from where I was low down at the other end of the ground.)

It's interesting because Brisbane similarly started like a house on fire last night. Difference in the games was they put together an unassailable lead (just) and the saints only got 4 goals. But even then, like Lewis said in his post match interview, we caught up much faster than you would normally expect after such a slow start.

What a match - I'm still celebrating!!!

While we weren't playing well in Q1, St Kilda did get a couple of freaskish goals where the ball could have gone out rather than end up through the goals. Good to see team didn't let it faze them.

Good midfields control a game. 

Once "the Machine" Oliver got going it all started to click. 

Lewis in the first Q kept us in it to some degree.

Very discreet and measured response by the club to the win.  Watched Lewis on Sunday footy and Goody in his presser.

No fawning over this or that young player.  No talking up the group to sell memberships and no discussion of details of strategies and tactics.
