Am article with much high praise of Oliver

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/melbourne-demon-oliver-leads-army-of-stars-20170407-gvgbek.html

Some snippets:

"He is like Cripps or Sydney's Josh Kennedy, a tall and strong midfielder who with longer arms have better reach to be able to get clear of a tackle and still get a handball out... The difference between Oliver and Cripps or Kennedy is that he is quick..."

"He accelerates through the contest," Melbourne player/coach performance manager Brendan McCartney said. "He is electric. He just has great power".

"Even for an AFL player Oliver has a fierce competitiveness in everything he does. Which means not just getting the ball and winning, but even making sure he gets the last word in an argument".

Final word to Macca:  "He was a really inspired pick by our recruiters,"

I'd also add that he's a lot better kick than this article gives him credit for.

I reckon he was tagged during the second and early part of the third last week.

Two thirds of his possessions are while he's being tackled anyway. So tagging him won't do [censored].

you mean to "clearance clarence"

I'll go early. Anyone else notice how he cleaned up dangerwood ?

Loved both articles on Clarry Choo Choo express!

He is Oliver wines 2.0

hes wines but cleaner, better skills and has speed

This sort of praise is great for our midfield. Lewis was hard tagged last week, Viney the week before. You can't tag em all, which means someone will get off the chain.

Let's see if he can break the 'Feature Article in the media - dud game follows' hoodoo.

They've set Oliver and us up for the "Dangerwood tames young Demons." or "The master and the apprentice.", etc...

if Oliver stars and we beat Dangerwood, the lid will officially be off, re our midfielders.

"Baby Demons come of age!"

don't like all the praise after two (outstanding) games - would prefer to keep him under wraps and out of the media spotlight for a few more rounds as yet.

It's alright, just takes the pressure off Salem, Viney, Petracca et al.

As far as going under the radar goes, the top marks have to go to Billy Stretch who has been excellent this year.

24 disposals a game, 9 of them contested, some tackles, some clearances, exceptional disposal (at 85%) just the one clanger to his name, and yet to give away a free kick.

Just steadily fulfilling the promise.

Sorry, I know this is a Clarence thread, but it is relevant as far as remembering that Oliver, while a monster, doesn't have quite so much pressure on him because he's not the only kid turning the club around.

Yep. Billy is very much the smiling assassin. Gets the job done, and you don't really notice what an impact he had until you see the stats and / or watch the replay. Sorta like Clarries hands

It's worth noting that even in a game where he started with a hard tag and wasn't at his best, he still managed 28 disposals, 5 clearances (equal third most on the ground) and 8 tackles (third most on the ground). He is going to be a super, super player.

He was sensational in the 3rd quarter yesterday. Put us in a winning position. I wish all of our players 'quiet days' are as good as his.

ANB and Stretch have been similar. "Quiet", but incredibly useful.

Slightly digressional, but Stretch's speedy development is something that has far exceeded expectations, surely? His sound decision-making and speed add so much to our midfield.

I hadn't previously included him in the same conversation as Oliver, Viney, Tyson, Petracca, Brayshaw, Jones, Lewis, Salem and Vince, but he now sits alongside them and compliments them well.

He had a terrific first half yesterday (aside from one costly clanger). What he's now adding to his game is the ability to find the ball consistently. He gets himself into good positions, which makes the opposition accountable.

Check out access all areas on afl website Damien Barrett the [censored] brought up Oliver and carried on about his handballs being throws, Lyon and Lloyd got stuck into him about it as he is just that quick to handball

Barrett...first against the wall when the revolution comes!

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
