It's when you start looking at what other countries with their sport that you realise just how far behind Australia is when it comes to utilising the internet for sport. The prices vs the quality, it makes you wonder why you should even bother.

Absolutely. I remember when I was living in Brussels a few years back, and all the local footy was switched exclusively to internet. Must have made sense financially.

The thing that gets me as well is that streaming on a computer or phone is a whole other experience, with other possibilities (technically). They should be offering multiple cameras, your own instant replay, and the biggie I always enjoyed from the dark days of streaming (when it's all there was ...), real-time comments from fellow viewers. At times it was almost like being there: "goooooaaaalllll !!!" (etc. etc.)

With the international WatchAFL service, they're also missing out on revenue, because they just stream the Australian ads, which are completely wasted on we expats. Should be a big opportunity for airlines and travel companies etc. to target a niche market, but no-one at the AFL seems to have their heads around the possibilities. They still seem to think that by putting up TV-on-a-computer, they're offering a service.

Can't deal with the AFL App not being able to watch on my tv, fortunately Telstra have a good deal at the moment

$99 month 1000gig internet, foxtel and free sports for 3 months, I currently pay $92 month for 500 gig so it's a no brainer for me back on foxtel for an extra $8 a month, and I get foxtel go can watch afl on any device without a small screen, I would say this is there goal is to get more people back to foxtel, I already had foxtel before last year but the app worked so well last year for free I cancelled foxtel, it's a shame you can't just buy the fox footy channel from them as I don't watch any other channels

Tried out the alternate method and it works. I think it's a lower resolution stream this year though. Thanks for the heads up!

As an aside...  for anyone who HAS foxtel, but wants to watch games when overseas, VPN + Foxtel GO is great!

Makes me so mad, you look at the brilliant game pass applications like the NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB, hell even the UFC and WWE.

Full HD on any device and in any location. Making the leagues more money than they do from TV because it is direct and quality, these services aren't cheap, but they are so worth it for the fans and the league.

I actually expected to that the AFL would introduce a season pass when they did the new media deal (like the NBA has which is awesome. On theirs, you can buy a season pass or just access to one team's games.) Brilliant! But they have been swayed by Foxtel who needed complete exclusivity to support their dying model. Not only that but Foxtel GO seems to be a low res option at best! Used it to watch game of thrones one year and it was horrendous...

The other thing is channel 7 don't even have the footy in HD. That's just insane. Even the NRL have HD through channel 90.

in this day where many have large flat screens HD is essential. The AFL are really letting the fans down. Other codes are making their product much more accessible while we are looking after Foxtel and it could cost us in the long run.

I went through it last night and it seems the international version is the premium foxtrot bundle-no lowfi I'd be curious to know what price you were pitched they were saying 149 euro for year to me and was wondering if I use a US ip would I get it cheaper, ie dollars and not euro???

I can't even remember what it was for a year - I am just paying monthly at the moment.

I tried the Live Pass last night, get it free from Telstra, to test it out, from phone to tv worked fine, have an Android Samsung

As for Foxtel showing games, Mountain View in Richmond is the go, excellent food and McCracken on tap

Saty, did you use and adaptor from Samsung phone to TV hdmi cable? What was the definition like?

I have a S4 and a Samsung tv (pre screen mirror feature) with hdmi cable, but haven't tried to connect thus far.

Cheers

Sorry chap not sure how it works daughter set it up for me   I have something called screen mirroring on phone I select and pick my tv and have tv set, it pops up    not very good but watchable

Was confined to phone...but eldest just plugged his foxtel in ( i dont have it )

Looking fwd to this game....just to compete well.

Go Red and Blue

I am furious right now - living in NZ, I can't actually watch foxtel so I purchase a live pass.  In previous seasons, I have apple mirrored to the TV.  This year I seem to have to user the app to watch it rather than a computer and It won't let me mirror it - bloody ridiculous.  I tried to find contact details but nada!!

For Android phones a MHL to HDMI adaptor is your friend.

I was wondering what was going on, what a joke.

Looks like I'm going to give in to what they want and get Foxtel.

Wish I was a Fro or Eagles supporter, they get every game free on TV here in WA.

Bull shite

If you have an Apple TV you should be able to airplay to the TV?

Pretty sure most of those services are international ones just like the afl has. The local ones have local games blacked out - so if the afl had a similar service here you couldn't watch any games in Melbourne live (assuming you live in Melbourne)

Last night I was so annoyed!!  I couldn't watch the game on my computer of apple mirror it - both things I have done every other season.  I cancelled my subscription at quarter time ans subscribed on the site https://www.watchafl.com.au/?gclid=CMbi88eTm9ICFYWXvAodV6wMHA.   It's a bit dear but worth it to be able to watch every game.  We have a family member in the team and there is no way the grandparents, cuzzies, friends and other rellies can all gather round the i phone to watch!!
