FAREWELL HERITIER LUMUMBA

Featured Replies

Thank God that's over. Up with Lard Arse Pickett as the worst value recruit in my thirty-odd years of membership of this club. From day one it was all about him, and nothing about the club or his teammates. I still don't believe that concussion has anything to do with his absence from the club or his retirement. Hopefully we get the full story one day, given that we as members are paying part of his salary not to turn up.

The sad thing is, he probably genuinely does care about the world outside football, and had the opportunity to use his profile and position to do some good. Now the prevailing view will be of a bloke who has worn out his welcome at two clubs, held out his hand for a massive payout for doing nothing, and consistently breached the terms of his contract.

I hope he finds what he is looking for in life, but I'm glad it will have nothing to do with the MFC.

I love a rip roaring Austrian musical.

Its up there with Springtime for Hitler for mine.

I thought Julie Andrews was more appealing in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang but that's just me.

There is no accountingfor taste- especially with Pro and McQueen lusting after ladies on life support.

Ciao H - it's been educational.

Do you like Anton Bruckner as well? he was Austrian.

Would have been lucky to play 6 games next year even if up and running.

No loss at all, and we now have an embarrassment of riches off half back.

This morning I had a coffee from the cafe where Paul Roos first met with Lumumba.

It was rubbish.

The meeting or the coffee ?

And if he had stayed on the LTI for a year we would have paid the salary as well, it didn't work out, you never left a job under lesd than perfect circumstances?

To actually doubt the concussion issues is pathetic to say the least next time I chat to Gus Brayshaw or Nev Jetta I'll let them know we have some doubters amongst supporters about the debilitating affects a couple of concussions can have

Yours is exactly the reaction when a player doesn't fit the normal stereotype,  similar to bullies in school or the workplace, except you can do it from behind the anonymity of your keyboard

H came to the club, it didn't work, he has gone, I would just say thank you for his efforts

Thank Christ we don't have more of these "not-normal-stereotype" players. The ones who decide it's a great idea to drag our club's medical department, and their professional integrity, through the mud.

I must have missed the part where Nev Jetta or Gus Brayshaw threatened to sue the club over the club's treatment of their concussions. I do remember Bernie Vince having some choice words on H's commitment to the club though; maybe you could ask him?

Concussion ???? - I am confused

The previous story was a complaint that the Club wouldn't let him play more than 5 games which stopped him triggering a contract extension.

Anyone professional who can't play because they are so distressed at someone's death is more Clown Prince than royalty.

It has never been confirmed that H was going to sue the club, this was the normal scuttelbutt in the newspapers and other media to appeal to the 'less enlightened'

We are enterting new territory on the affects of continuous concussions, and with Alex McKinnon now changing the landscape on onfield injuries, I would expect the action you are accusing H of, to actually occur in the future, the club has gone out of its way to ensure this doesn't happen in H's case

Bernie Vince was being Bernie Vince, he said the way the club treats concussion is spot on, I agree and so does Nev and Gus, so does the press release from Josh Mahoney

Got to say Saty I question the concussion story because nobody saw him get hit.  In the Age this morning they mention that there is no vision of the VFL game concussion and nobody has been able to direct me to the AFL incident as well.  We saw Jetta get hit by Howe and I saw both Brayshaw's incidents at Essendon and Sandy.  Jetta and Brayshaw never hesitate to put themselves in harms way but Lumumba was the antithesis of that which makes his circumstance much more problematic.  I don't think anyone is questioning the concussion issue but more questioning Lumumba's issue with concussion.

As you say Lumumba didn't fit the normal stereotype.  Just adds to the haziness around the whole situation. Frankly I don't believe the major issue was concussion but concussion was perhaps one of the issues and the one both he and the Club focused on publicly. I suspect Lumumba used concussion as the issue.

I'm like others, no tears that he's gone.

Gee chap you must have never had a concussion, you do not have to 'get a direct hit on the chin' so to speak, Gus got one of his from getting belted in the back of the head with a ball, your head can accidentally hit the ground under a tackle and nobody notices it, you can get your neck twisted doing the same thing, or you can get an accidental elbow hit to the temple, they will all cause a concussion as the head snaps back

H played 220 odd games, it could have been a cumulative affect, one of the more 'infamous' is Jeff Astle a famous soccer player who died of a brain injury, they think brought about by heading a wet leather soccer ball so often, he was 'famous' for his heading ability, he was never actually knocked out

Because H is H, if he farted in a particular way this would be news

Not sure ( nor care really ) that we'll ever know the full truth.

Go Dees

It does highlight just how tight this ship is. Not a word gets out without being sanctioned.

I don't understand this. Either he's off the list for 2017 in which case we should be able to upgrade a rookie or he's on the list and should be able to go as a long term injury due to concussion.

The ruling that he's a terminated player and therefor we can't promote someone is ridiculous.

Surely that borders on bullshlt ??

Can't be right. @#$!!!!! AFL!!!!

Another gem from Lumumba on the way out. Thanks for costing one of our rookies some senior games next season.

Such a team player, is H.

Quite happy for Harry to always be regarded as that Ex Collingwood player !! ;)

For consistency, lets hope that Fremantle and Richmond are also unable to upgrade rookies as they similarly reached settlements and released Shane Yarran and Chris Yarran from their contracts, after final list lodgements.

If those teams have the same restriction I'll wear the Lumumba/no rookie ruling.  If not I will be filthy and expect the club to go to the AFL with a 'Please Explain' note!!!

I'm glad he's gone. How the bloody hell can you build a premiership team, when some ponce is hanging around talking about the deli llama or the time someone pulled a gun on him in Brazil.

Get out and good riddance. I doubt players from either club would be interested in hanging out such a self important [censored]

When did H actually become concussed??

Well that's a story in itself SWYL. It was on a recent club sanctioned trek to Tibet, The Prince went to bow to the Dalai Lama, the Dalai Lama moved to one knee to bow to the Prince and it was just a simple clash of heads. There's no concussion testing (other than incense) in that part of the World and, naturally, The Prince held the club accountable. Did he have a case? It's hard to say.

Something is fishy with the AFL ruling if it is in fact a ruling.

We could have kept HL on the list and paid him the agreed amount, while declaring him unfit to play and eligible for the LTI list and then able to uplift a rookie.

He then would have retired at the end of the season.

Something is funny here.

Don't worry, the AFL will make something up on the spot as to why Richmond/Fremantle will get to upgrade a player.

Quite right - just like they did last year and let the drug cheats get replacement players for those suspended and we, Port and Bulldogs could not (after they canvassed the other clubs, no less).

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
