Straight into it! First day for Dion Johnstone! ??

He's possibly the youngest looking footballer I've ever seen.

I have a better one... Zach Guthrie has been rookied by the Cats and will join his older brother Cam.

Yeah I think the "rehab" group is a misleading term as all players will have times when they join it whether for a session or certain drills.

I have covered Trenners being in the rehab group, I spoke to him so this is his words

"In rehab group to steadily increase load on foot, foot is fine, still gets it checked out once a month, loads and loads of running, to be ready to go 1st training session after Xmas break"

On Oliver he has been generally crook, lack of energy etc, have sent him for a battery of tests, club being cautious with him

Am I the only one disappointed by Trenners being in the rehab group his second week back?

As far as we know he had no injuries at the end of last season and was lucky to be given a 1 year contract.

would have thought he would have gotten himself conditioned enough like most the players to be ready to rock it with the main group from day 1. Extremely disappointed he still needs to be eased into it when he had highlighted that he wanted to use this pre season to get his explosiveness back

Who said he was lucky to be given a contract?  Mahoney?  Jack?

Jack is one of the most professional players on the list.  Your concerns about the shape that he has come back in are totally uneducated.

Looks like he could play in the Under 15's

Makes you question the drafting age. Year 12 school is not the big decision point it used to be so why not move the draft age out a year or two. It could be done over 4 years with six month increments each year so as not to kill the draft.

There's a risk, though, that the longer a kid has to wait to be drafted the more likely he might be tempted by another code, such as soccer or basketball.

The basket ball in the US is interesting

I think they need one year in College. In the past drafting was done at the end of college. In recent years starting with Carmelo Anthony (IIRC) the stars have been disappearing to the NBA after year 1. (Money and risk of injury are the main drivers).

On the other hand NFL requires that you have been out of high school for three years

(Just looked up NBA... they require one year post high school and a minimum age of 19 years.)

Not so worried about them being pinched by other sports. If anything it might improve our cricket stocks but that is only a very few players. Soccer... the kids start at under ten at the latest. Hard to see an Australian Rules player changing to the round ball code

They have a much bigger pool to draw on, so the competition for the best athletes isn't as strong as it is here in Australia.  We have Cricket, Basketball, Rugby, Rugby, Football and Football all competing for a pretty limited pool of talented kids.  The kids are going to go where the money is, so if one code decides that 18 is too young to offer them contracts they will very quickly be unable to attract any decent players.

His perseverance has been Herculean. His professionalism is lauded by everyone.

There is no way he's in the rehab group b/c he's out of condition as a result of being too heavily on the cans in the off season etc.

I'm sure it's just part of his (modified) programme.

If that's the case, it has changed. Kids have been drafted straight out of high school for years (Kevin Garnett and Kobe Bryant are the best known examples that jump to mind)

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. BLWNBA'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I arrived at around 1015 and the squad was already out on the track. The rehab group consisted of XL, McAdam, Melksham, Spargo and Sestan. Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
