I have just re watched the last 5 minutes of our 2014 game against Essendon. The one we won by one point with Salem kicking the match winner, Boy, with a minute to go all looked lost until an amazing burst of precise  handballing and kicking. Jordie McKenzie  was right in it being involved twice. Lucky for us the umpires didn't pay an obvious free to Frawley because that would have stagnated our attacking flow and Salem's goal would most likely not happened. Would this piece of teamwork involving at least 9 players go down as one of our greatest movement of the footy? I have not seen better. How about others?

There would be plenty of examples from last season that would be of equal caliber. The first one that springs to mind is late season vs. the Hawks, and Oliver kicking off a chain with a huge handball from the boundary and Viney then selling a Willy Wonkas worth of candy.

Agree with Skuit and think there will be more to come in the future.

The thing that made the play that resulted in Salem's goal so spectacular was that it won us a game and was also a rare time during that period that the shackles were removed and for a moment we played good, attacking footy. For the remainder of that season we went back into our negative, defensive shells and stunk.

it stood out like a sore thumb as it was the first time since 2011 we had moved the ball like that.

We probably had 50+ passages this season like that or better.

I do recall it bring a great comeback win, that's for sure.

Probably great bit of decision making from Daniel Cross to pass to Salem and how about those calm nerves under pressure from a kid playing one of his first games.

Essendon were practically our bunny side for a few years there - how some things change!

I just watched that replay. All four quarters- Melb V Hawks Rnd 20 - are on YouTube. It is fantastic although I still got a bit nervous. Weirdly I was barracking for Lewis to do good things. Watts's full range of sublime kicking skills are on display, favourite was his kick to Tyson from the centre towards the end of the last. Clarkson said Gawns last half was the most dominant ruck performance he had seen. Your man Viney had a lazy 39 possessions. I may watch it again

Okay so I went and had a look. The passage was nowhere as clean as clean as I remembered - quite messy in fact (I think I may have been a bit emotionally and otherwise blinded at the time) -  but it was Viney stepping Lewis. And then not long after Frost pulling out a Dusty don't argue on Hodge - with Mitchell resorting to giving Watts a little whack on the chops at around the same time. Felt like our young brigade had the Hawks champs completely frustrated.

That's the end of the '64 grand final, and about the only coherent passage of play in the entire Rothman's  film clip. (Youtube).

I absolutely marvelled that long accurate pass to Tyson. A good example of Jack's kicking skills. The other great one was when surrounded in a pack he managed a clever kick to allow Dom to score a vital goal.

Watched the Essendon one live on laptop in Manila. Punching the air and whole cafeteria barracking for us. 

 

Best thing was scum outplayed us all day. Game had some sort of record; 72 to 37 inside 50s or something, and still lost.

It was Cam Pedersen slipping a tackle in the back pocket that set up that play, and of course Jordie's handball as well.

The Essadon players were caught flat footed on the members wing with Melbourne able to get clear along the centre corridor. 

And just on the Hawthorn game: Derwayne's commentary spoils it for me!
