No doubt he'd dined out on being the Hirds father during Hirds playing career and is now struggling to chew the fact his son is now an AFL disgrace.

My mate played with Hird snr in he Dons VFL Reserves side in the 1960's. He also worked alongside him in the education department. Father and son had a falling out many years ago, partly as a result of Jim Bob's choice of a wife. They've been estranged for years. Essentially Hird snr is trying to curry favour with his son.

    Not really anything to do with the drug saga, but this weekend is the Bombers' 25 year anniversary to the 1993 baby bombers win v Carlton.

    According to radio, the reunion will be without James Hird, Gavin Wanganeen, Dean Wallis, Mark Thompson (c), Sean Denham and possibly others.

    Bit of a kick in the guts to the club I reckon.

    I know,  that bit still  really gets under my skin even now. Also Watson handed back his brownlow. Except he didnt actually hand the thing  back...never wanted to and only did so under pressure. Just so the AFL didnt have to "take" it off him. Which they should have done every day of the week. It all looked so different when were being hounded for the apparantly much more grevious sin of "tanking"  I often wonder what would have happened , if instead of Essendon that club had been us, A club so many see as unimportant and without all the media chums that the druggies had. Neeld invited that idiot into our club also ...so we dodged a fatal  bullet there by a few cm's only.

    Two of those should be far too embarrassed to attend, and others maybe just pi553d off (or have other unrelated reasons).

    I have always had the belief that Thompson bought the "program" from Geelong  and Hird adopted the same at Essendon and Wallis was so far into it as well (who lost all the records?????). HOW THEY WERE ABLE TO STAY IN THE LEAGUE. That's right. Bums on seats = bonus's for AFL management. Alright. I still haven't got over it.

    Kick in the guts to the club? Huh? The club behind the drugs in sport saga. Fk them, I hope it’s all a giant fizzer.

    Apparently there is something going down at TWSNBN about how the same bloke (Neeld) is the only one still in the box on G day now.

    That little bit of data is completely meaningless without context. For example, what's the usual number who might turn up for any other club's 25 year reunion? What were the reasons behind why the seven didn't go (illness? travel? work commitments?, etc) Frankly, without additional information the point that 7 didn't go is a fact in search of a meaning.

    If you'd been listening to Tim and Garry in the last two mornings you'd understand, Tim has been saying ex players have fallen out with the club. I have heard from a friend that Long is unwell but not sure.

    Thanks, that's helpful. While media often "beat up" (or sometimes even "make up") a story like this, you'd have to assume Tim Watson knows more than most given he was part of the 1993 premiership team.

    Lindsay Tanner interviewed today on 3AW before the Blues v Essendon game:

    My two take aways:

    • No attempt to make an apology despite ample opportunity
    • Even the media call it "the affair" and tend to blame the AFL.

    I am sure that in a few years it will be known as the "CAS corruption scandal" or similar.

    Always someone else's fault. Bomber and Hird victims.  All an ASADA witch-hunt assisted by AFL house ( begrudgingly )

    Hope that club burns in hell for eternity. Hope there's no long term effects for the conned and gullible.

    Still concerns me one of them now coaches us.

    It is so sad, for all parties, and so unnecessary to engage in rumours and suppositions. The law is the law and it can run its course to make decisions warranted on evidence and fact. Let's not bespoil Demonland forums with inuendo and let this one pass at this point. To know something is not smart, it is a form of self-aggrandisement if you pass it on publicly at an early point. Many are affected by a drug or substance culture as a feature of our society. Not all are guilty of such personal choices. and circumstances between and across people differ markedly.

    The were later fined extensively for breaching the salary cap in that year. Another tainted flag....

    In 1996, Essendon were fined a record $638,250 ($250,000 in back tax and penalties, $112,000 for draft tampering and $276,250 for breaching the salary cap regulations), forfeited their first, second and third round picks in the National Draft and were excluded from the 1997 rookie and pre-season drafts after a joint Australian Tax Office and AFL investigation found that they had committed serious and systematic breaches of the salary cap regulations totalling $514,500 between 1991 and 1996, including $110,000 in 1993 when Essendon won the premiership

    No sympathy at all for that rotting stinking carcass of a club.

    It's sad that those doing so get confronted with competing against CHEATS. 

    Its sad that when caught they look to blame others and lie their way out of sanction. Its sad that the Law even provides they can stall and obfuscate legitimate action against them.

    Its sad that none of the above is either rumour or inuendo. Its a matter of record.

    Just as sad was it all only came to light through an agency not actually connected to this game. Its sad that those empowered to look after ethics and well being have shown a taste for doing things otherwise.

    Im not one bit sad for Essendon....and their 'naughty ones'

      There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
