Starting a thread to discuss what people are wanting (realistically) from trade week. Be interested to see who you fellow 'landers think we may be targeting and have a good chance of getting. Also detail what we will have to give up to get the target.

Created a poll to see what we come to..

My go at it:

1. Hibberd for our 2nd Rounder (done on day 1)

2. Vardy for 4th Rounder

3. Scott Thompson as a DFA (1 year deal with assistant coaching role)

4. Eric MacKenzie as a FA (3 year deal)

Posted

Hibberd will be a good get.

Of the veterans, in order, I would prefer:

1.    Harvey

2.    Barlow (if we get him cheaply enough in terms of draft pick) – He doesn’t fit our need for speed, but he is only 28.

3.    Dal Santo

4.    Thompson

While I think outside run is our greatest need, I wouldn’t go for Wells as he is too injury prone.

MacKenzie is a caravan defender who hasn’t been able play in the Eagles new defensive system. I don’t think he suits our needs given we are playing a zone defence also.

Current 2nd rounder for Hibberd

Future 1st rounder and Garland for Hoskin-Elliot, Tomlinson (hasn't signed yet) and GWS pick 17 this year

On-trade pick 17 to Port for Hartlett

ANB and pick 45 to Adelaide for Lyons and pick 50

Matt Jones and future 2nd rounder to Gold Coast for pick 22

I think Mackenzie,

experienced key defender who has been an all australian centre half back in the last couple of years, we really lack for experience all over the ground but especially there, would take pressure off Tommy McDonald and i think he'd be a fantastic get for the club.

I am not as keen on the older mid like Dal Santo

if our 2017 first rounder could land Hartlett and Port cover some of the salary i'd be open to that as well

I'm not sure but I thought you could only trade one future pick per year?

Otherwise I like it except that the GWS deal seems like a bit of a steal.

I'd add in Scotty Thompson for experience and the team starts looking extremely good.

Not sure on that, you could be right, I only knew we had to use 2 first rounders in 4 years and we used 2 last year.

Upgrade from Pick 26 to 24 by sending Garland to Gold Coast

Trade Pick 24 to Essendon for Hibberd

Trade future 2nd Round Pick to Geelong for Vardy & the Cats 3rd Round Pick this year (51-54).  Think there'll be enough interest in Vardy to drive up his price in a trade.

Dal Santo as a delisted free agent.*

*I would have a crack at both Wells or Hartlett before Dal Santo, so not sure why neither are listed as I wouldn't have thought either are unrealistic options.

So, basically pick 26 and Garland for Hibberd? Seems overs.

I think Hibberd for our second round pick is basically a fait-accompli.  As that ties up our second rounder and our first has already headed north, I'd love for us to target a free agent or two to balance out our young list, particularly if we're losing Grimes and possibly one of Dunn or Garland.

1) Brent Harvey (DFA); has the speed and goal-kicking nous that we lack.  Would cost nothing but a place on our list.

2) Tyrone Vickery (FA): Again, would only cost us some cap space and a place on the list.  Would be the only ruck forward on our list who is ready to play senior football and, despite very promising signs, Weid won't be ready for a full time gig for another year.

3) If Eric McKenzie was going cheap - 3rd rounder, I'd be very interested.

When all's said and done, I'm not expecting us to be big players this year and the free agency pile is looking pretty thin for 2016.

Don't disagree.  But sadly after watching Garland in the VFL this year, I think his currency is pretty low.

I think he has a little more value than an upgrade from 26 to 24 though (isn't our pick 27 btw?). I had him as part of a trade with GWS as Patfull might be close to the end.

Pick 26.  That draft order that has us at 27 is from July.

And your right GWS could also be interested.  I thought Gold Coast though as they need experience, and Garland could play the 3rd tall defender role allowing KK to move into a midfield role given the departures of Presta, O'Meara and an aging Ablett & Ritschitelli.

Ah cheers for the updated link!

Yeah GWS and GC will also look to spread out their picks to next year as well IMO, plus they have to reduce their list sizes don't they? On top of making room for some high picks this year. Mahoney has impressed me a lot the last couple of years, and one of the smartest things he's done is cultivate a really good trade relationship with GC and GWS. I expect some moves will be made with one or both of them.

Last trade period he was copping pages of outright abuse as no one understood what he was trying to do... until it all suddenly came together.

I agree, we've been very crafty the last few years.

2nd round pick for Hibberd

I would like to see Zac Clarke at Melbourne - we need ruck depth. Unsure of Freo's needs, so finding it difficult to suggest how to get it done.

I think that GWS will not want to deal with the Pies for a while, due to Gubby letting Treloar go there and then following him.

Will this leave us with no first or second round picks for next years trade period?

Also I don't think Matt Jones has any trade value whatsoever.

Lyons played 19 games this year, why would Adelaide trade him for ANB and a pick only five selections better? Has Lyons asked for a trade?

We could possibly trade back in to the draft, but at some stage we need to back ourselves, stop getting younger and actually have a crack.

Jones has little trade value, although GC could do with a steady depth player, which is why he would get us a trade up from what would hopefully be about pick 26 to pick 22.

There's talk Lyons wants out, possibly back to Victoria (source) and I wouldn't be surprised to see ANB (ranked 5th best player in the VFL) wanting more opportunities back home in SA.

Also, just for reference, Matt Jones output this year is not far behind Lyons', so I don't think it's fair to say one is worth a lot and the other nothing.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
