If Gelong and Hawthorn were allowed to violate the future picks rules then everyone should be allowed to trade pick up to 3-4 years in the future

Can you read?  They didn't violate them.

Maybe not yet 55, but Geelong need to trade for a first round pick in the 2017 or 2018 draft to meet first round pick requirements over a 4-year period. What happens if (hypothetically) all 17 teams refuse to trade a first round pick to them???

We get pilloried for our drafting but GWS are able to have their ineptitude ignored because of the sheer volume of top-end draft picks they have had.

Silvagni is a dud list manager

To be fair to SOS, Carlton's recruiting was horrible before he arrived as well. ;) Cripps is the only diamond in the rough and he was still a late first rounder.

The looser they make the trading rules the better - it's what gets so many players new homes, staves off a pure free agency, and allows clubs to bet the farm and lose like I hope Hawthorn just did and Geelong is in the midst of doing.

But thank god the rules loosened during our current admin. Imagine Prenders with futures in hand.

The AFL gave themselves an out with the future pick rules.  There's a clause in there that says a club can apply to the AFL for special consideration to trade picks they would otherwise not be allowed to.  The restrictions were put in place to prevent clubs from trading away all of their future high picks chasing glory (as Brisbane did not that long ago).  Given that the Hawks came perilously close to winning four flags in a row I think they have reasonable grounds to say that they aren't in danger of destroying their list by missing a couple of first rounds, especially since they've traded out their first round picks repeatedly to bring in quality mature players.  I'm pretty sure a club like Brisbane wouldn't have been given permission.

So Gazza asked for a trade back to Victoria for 'family reasons'.  http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/gold-coast-captain-and-excat-gary-ablett-requested-a-trade-back-to-geelong-20161026-gsbdsn.html

While he is a brilliant football, he is also a player that has hardly been on the park for the best part of 2.5 years, collecting over a million $ per year.  He has not set a off field example at any stage since going up there and it looks like he isn't about to start now.

His medals will immortalise him as a great of the game but he is not someone I have had a lot of respect for (other than for his football skills).

I thought he took up a huge challenge to go up to the Gold Coast and played his backside off for the first 3 or 4 years or whatever it was until that first shoulder injury. Yeah he's not the perfect captain by any stretch and couldn't fix their cultural problems but on field he was great and it's not like he contributes to off field problems, he just can't seem to fix them.

When Gold Coast extended his initial contract on big money with their team heading backwards I thought it was a bad deal for both sides. Gaz didn't get to finish his career with a successful team playing forward and having fun winning and the Suns wasted 1 million a year hoping for a midfielder who's body can't deliver that any more. If you blame Ablett for it I think you have to blame the Suns as well.

He is a brilliant football. That polished perfectly shaped head. The predictable bounce. The welcome invitation to kick him as far as you could.

    TRAINING: Wednesday 19th February 2025

Demonlander The Analyser was the sole Trackwatcher out at Casey Fields today to bring you the following observations from this mornings preseason training session. Training  was at Casey today. It consisted of a match simulation for one half  and then a free choice activity time. Activities included kicking for goal,  aerial , contest work etc. I noticed the following players not in match simulation Jack Viney  running laps and looks fine for round one . I think Kolt looks like he’s im

    TRAINING: Wednesday 12th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the scorching morning heat to bring you the following observations of Wednesday's preseason training session from Gosch's Paddock. HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. Firstly the bad news - McVee went down late, which does look like a bad hammy - towards the end of match sim, as he kicked the ball. Had to

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

    TRAINING: Wednesday 5th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatchers were out in force as the Demons returned to Gosch's Paddock for preseason training on Wednesday morning. GHOSTWRITER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Kozzie a no show. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
