I'm curious as to why you think this? Obviously he's struggled to stay on the park but if he was healthy I think he could potentially be better than someone like melksham etc.

His apparent strength is his speed off half-back, I don't think he's quick and I don't see him breaking lines.

FB: Frost, T McDonald, Jetta

HB: Hunt, O. McDonald, Hibberd

C: Vince, Tyson, Lewis

HF: Petracca, Weideman, Kent

FF: Watts, Hogan, Garlett

FOLL: Gawn, Jones, Viney

INT: Brayshaw, Melksham, Salem, Stretch

EMERG: Harmes, Bugg, Lumumba

The above is clearly our best team.

No, he's finished.

It's nice to be able to do one of these before the draft...

There's a few of my favorites I can't find a place for...

Not necessarily irrelevant.  They do form a useful template.  Though I do agree, not often realised.

Maybe a better way of putting it!

I like to think of our back six, fwd 6 middle and 10 mids. It is looking like we are starting to form a good template with age, experience, key positions etc

The two big areas that are a worry for me are back up ruck and a key position back that's reliable. The lesser issue is outside speed with clean delivery. Maybe Stretch and Salem can fill those spots.

What? his lunch.

If fit and in form I would have him in the team, but all this discussion is irrelevant, I would just have posts listing each posters best 22, I personally never bother because I get down to the last 2 or 3 and lose interest

We are now far better equipped so no further need for a headless chook.

I agree, but it makes for interesting conversation

My Side

FB:  Jetta        TMac     Omac
HB: Hibberd    Frost      Hunt
C:    Lewis       Jones     Vince
HF: Petracca   Pedo     Watts
FF:  Garlett      Hogan   Kent
Foll: Gawn       Viney     Tyson

Int: Brayshaw, Oliver, Salem, Vandenberg

Emg Melksham, Stretch, Weids, Kennedy

It won't happen but Pedo should be a lock every week. Very underrated when he plays he straightens us up big time, can ruck and loves a goal and More importantly lays a good bump!

midfield obviously rotating about 7-8 through Viney, Vince, Jones, Lewis, Brayshaw, Oliver, Petracca, Tyson..

Stretch very stiff to miss out! I se him and Salem fighting for the same spot really..

The above is clearly our best team.

A team without Oliver will not be our best team. IMO, he will be our best midfielder in time. If he can stay fit and has a good pre-season, he'll average mid 20s for posessions in 2017.

Looking at some of these teams makes interesting reading though. I reckon the players really under pressure for their spots in 2017 are: Jetta, Frost, OMac, Vince, Garlett and Melksham. I'd personally add Kent to that list, but the FD seem to allow him to play games on end without seemingly impacting for weeks. While Pederson and Weideman will rotate a bit as that second or third forward I'd say.

It's weird (and yes this is at the height of Trade Season optimism which is likely to crash and burn early next year) but I see some of these best 22 lists and go "What about...?". Billy Stretch for example who played good football and now isn't included in a lot of peoples best team.

Then I think about the players that I think aren't completely awful (Bugg and Kennedy for example) who injuries aside will have to be absolutely dominant in the VFL to get a game.

Then I have another sip of Carlsburg and think to myself "This is a bloody nice position to be in, wtf is going on".

The big hole that we haven't filled is that forward second ruckman, I would love for Goodwin to have courage and send in Frost from defence when his player goes in(assuming he gets the oppositions forward Ruck option. Below is by best line ups

Jetta Frost O McDonald

Hibberd T McDonald Hunt

Salem Jones Lewis

Vince Watts Petracca

Kent Hogan Garlett

Gawn Viney Tyson

Oliver Brayshaw Stretch Harmes

Jetta                  T.Mac             Frost

Hibberd            O. Mac            Hunt

Lewis                  Viney            Milkman

Watts                 Hogan           Petracca

Kent                 Pederson        Garlett

OOliver Brayshaw, Stretch, Salem

Gawn    Jones  Tyson

Good mix of youth,  pace and experience there.  Sorry for bad formatting,  Samsung galaxy is bad

And just like that I've left Vince out lol. This is getting harder

If he is healthy and does have a strong pre-season, then I think he makes the best 22. However it's hard to see both of those things coming to fruition, if his last couple of seasons are anything to go by.

Was about to say you dropped Bernard. For shame :)

Accomodating Melksham is a challenge. I'd be happy to see him earn a spot but I'm pretty sure he will line up in Round 1.

FWIW, this is the side that I think will run out in round 1, barring injuries.

B:       Jetta       O McDonald       Frost

HB:    Hibberd   T McDonald      Salem

C:       Hunt             Jones         Vince

HF:     Petracca     Hogan       Brayshaw

F:     Garlett            Watts        Pedersen

R:      Gawn            Lewis           Viney

I/C:    Tyson,  Melksham,  Kent,  Oliver

Special mentions to Stretch, Harmes, Weideman, VandenBerg and Wagner who I think will all be pushing hard for selection. ANB too if he remains on the list.

I love how long that took me, and I'm sure I've missed someone important.

FB:  JETTA      T.MCDONALD     O.MCDONALD

HB:  HUNT           FROST            HIBBERD

C:    VINCE           TYSON            LEWIS

HF: PETRACCA    HOGAN        MELKSHAM

FF: GARLETT      WATTS          WEIDERMAN

R:   GAWN          JONES              VINEY

I/C: OLIVER, SALEM, PEDERSON, BRAYSHAW

STIFF TO MISS: HARMES, BUGG, LUMUMBA, VANDENBERG

pretty confident that line up will get us finals, would love to see TRENGROVE get a run as well!

I'll give it a crack.

FB:  Jetta        O McDonald      Frost

HB: Hunt         T McDonald      Hibberd

C:   Stretch           Tyson            Lewis

HF: Petracca     Pedersen         Watts

FF: Kent               Hogan           Garlett

RR: Gawn             Viney             Jones

I/C: Vince, Oliver, Melksham, Salem.

Next five: Brayshaw, Wagner, Harmes, Bugg, vandenBerg.

Break in case of emergency: Kennedy, Lumumba, Neal-Bullen, Spencer, Trengove, White, Garland, Kennedy-Harris, Michie.

Ideally developing in the VFL: Weideman, Hulett, Smith, McKenna, Mitch King, Maynard, draft picks.

Likely delistees: Dawes, Newton, Max King.

There is no such thing as a "best 22".

Compare all the "best 22s" put together before round 1 this year with those put together at the end of the year. No resemblance.

The "best 22" is not a thing cast in bronze, with 22 players guaranteed of a spot each week barring injury, and the others in the list milling round outside the changing rooms hoping for a miracle.

Form, injury, next opponent, travel ... things change and so does the 22.

I don't think many here are under such illusions. It's just fun putting together the team that you think is our best side, or might be the team that runs out in round one.

Mine would be as follows:

B:      Jetta            T Mac           Frost

HB:   Hibberd       O Mac          Hunt

C:     Stretch         Jones           Lewis

HF:   Watts           Hogan          Petracca

F:      Garlett         Pedo            Kent

R:      Gawn          Tyson           Viney

Int: Vince        Brayshaw         Oliver      Salem

Emg:  Melksham      Vandenberg     Spencer

Depth: Neal-Bullen    Trengove    Kennedy    Bugg    JKH    Weid   Lumumba     Wagner

That's 33 players who I think would be more than worthy of a sport in the best 22.

Bring on 2017!

Internally the club considers Oscar the FB and Tom CHB.

Jetta  O McDonald  Frost

Hunt  T McDonald  Hibberd

Vince  Lewis  Stretch

Petracca  Hogan  Jones

Kent  Weideman   Watts

Gawn  Tyson  Viney

Oliver  Salem  Brayshaw   Melksham

E:  Harmes  vandenBerg  Garlett

It's almost there isn't it? An established second ruck would be great but unlike most, who talk of a ruck/forward, I think a ruck/defender would be a better fit. Jackson Trengove is a free agent in 12 months. As is David Zaharakis, who would obviously add the speed and outside run we might be lacking. Two targets that would just about complete the jigsaw. Just spit-balling.

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.

  • NON-MFC: Round 09

Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?
