Surely Hunt Deserves a Rising Star Nomination

I suggested it.  Not because I "wanted" it though (I cringe whenever Redleg says this), it was just because most players don't get two years on the list with an output of zero unless they're a tall, even if they've been injured.  I plainly made the wrong call, but I'm still pretty comfortable with the logic I used to get there based on previous experience.  It will definitely have an effect on my future delisting considerations.

The club, with its actions - first in drafting Hunt in the National Draft when he probably would have fallen to the RD, and by retaining him this year, showed a level of faith in a struggling young player that I've never seen before.  It's paying huge dividends now.  This is why these guys (Roos, Mahoney, Viney, Taylor etc) get paid the big bucks.  This is the 'management' story of the year for mine.

Absolutely. I haven't checked, but I'd wager that I was also an advocate of moving him on at that time, or at least re-drafting him as a rookie.

Fair to say, we all had little clue how effective he'd be once he overcame injuries.

Mark Fine calling for Hunt's nomination this week.

Great if he wins a rising star nom,he often hunts his opposition. Has anyone won the rising star award without being a weekly winner(nominee)?

You cant. They only vote on the people who are in the 23 weeks in a 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 fashion. We hope that Petracca and Oliver get a few votes and maybe a 4th finish for Trac after Mills, Daniel, Weitering

Hunt definitely deserves a nomination as he's Ben great and is having an impact on games.

Caleb Daniel deserves to win the award though. He's been consistent all year bringing in good numbers and providing run the Bulldogs need. Great little footballer!

Daniel may win and probably deserves to win, but a player of his calibre winning diminishes the award a bit in my eyes.

I'd give it to Mills.

Btw, I'm not meaning to sound disrespectful to Daniel, but I don't envisage that he'll ever be more than a good ordinary player.

Hunt would be very unlucky to miss out again... he deserves a nomination. His run and carry is more than just possessions.

Silvagni may snag it just because of his family connection.

Playing in a losing side has in the past made it harder to get nominated.

I will be the first to admit that as the season approached I though, "Jayden who?" [thorough total ignorance on my part].

What was all the hype about - people said he was really fast, as was that ranga [have mentally surpassed his name for now] who ended up with Geelong taking him off our hands.

I am delighted to say that I was totally blind and he has become one of my favourites.

I can't remember a HBF who breaks the lines as well as Hunt, takes on the play, spoils, tackles its great courage and even scores some goals.

Well done.

I just love the fact that he looks like he would be the type of player who runs around packs looking for the cheap handball, when in fact he is as hard as anyone in the team. His tackles are great, he runs into packs with no fear, and he loves to go in hard. For someone who weighs 3kgs, and looks like a Disney princess, this kid is just a machine.

Obsessed isn't the right word for how I feel about this guy.

Like Lewis Taylor?

Correct, the award is for a rising star and not a rising reliable player, Trac is the sort of player that should win this award, maybe even Hunt because he will be special, if the selectors can't see this then they shouldn't be on the panel.

Haven't seen a lot of Mills but I heard one commentator say he will be a very reliable player but not a star, I think it was Dermie.

Just watched the game again.

I'd almost turn for this lad.

The Silvagni charity show will get it...

My suspicion without any empirical evidence to back it up is that whoever has the job of choosing the weekly Rising Star nomination uses the last few rounds to make sure eligible players who have been performing consistently well for most of the year without gaining a nomination finally get the nod. On that basis, Hunt or Oscar might get chosen this week, irrespective of their merits.

I love it that there is a poster on Demonland - can't remember who - who kept telling us Hunt was the goods. That poster deserves kudos.

Not blowing my own trumpet. But i did say that at school boy footy level he played with Salem and Kelly and was as good if not better than those two. They went on to develop quicker and played TAC comp but Hunt didn't.

I agree wholeheartedly with this. Watch them pull some names out of a hat? Brisbane had a win as did Ess. McDonald Tipungwuti?

FoxFooty saying that O Mac should get the nomination this week.

Also Devil in the Detail I remember you talking about this and I believe there was someone on SEN who was singing his praises as well pre draft and then once we drafted him. Was it the APS grand final where he just ran over Salem and Kelly and showed how good he was? Kelly has clearly shown he is going to be a champion this year and we all believe that Salem once he gets a run at it will challenge him. If Hunt is 2/3 of the player they become we will be very, very lucky.

Pretty sure they will want to give every club an even spread.. Doesn't look too good if we get another.. Especially with Brisbane & Essendon fighting for a priority pick.

Not sure. I was just regurgitating something I had heard just after we drafted him.

Think that was Robert Shaw, who had a connection with his school.

IMO Hunt has killed most on that list. He has to be nominated before the end of the season.

Oliver has probably not had enough games.

Petracca has been brilliant in patches but not consistent enough.

Daniel or Mills will probably win because of consistency.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
